Trendsetter wins outreach award

dean_kriellaars.jpgThe recipient of the 2012 Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Campbell Outreach Award is Dr. Dean Kriellaars, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, School of Medical Rehabilitation in the Faculty of Medicine.

This honour is awarded to a University of Manitoba staff member who unquestionably demonstrates meritorious service in outreach activities. For well over a decade Dr. Kriellaars has traveled across Manitoba and Canada volunteering his time to share his knowledge about healthy lifestyles and physical literacy with health care professionals, coaches, trainers, and educators in association with organizations such as the RCMP, Sport for Life, and Physical and Health Education Canada.

Acting on his vision of enhancing people?s health and physicality, Dr. Kriellaars has pioneered new programs that have been adopted across the country. He created a novel informed decision making program for substance use in sport and health, which is the basis of a new professional development module for the Coaching Association of Canada. The RCMP, in their national drugs-and-sports program, also adopted this model, and the model is the foundation for a new 30-minute drug prevention video targeted for nationwide school use. He was also the first in the world to develop a program evaluation survey for assessing substance use and abuse in sports; it has been used for the past five years and it provides organizations such as Sport Manitoba with current and relative information about the behaviors of athletes related to substances, fitness practices, and nutrition.

Dr. Kriellaars regularly speaks to student bodies across the province and country about healthy living and substance abuse. In British Columbia he worked with the BC Sport Agency to combat their crisis of inactivity among youth and he continues to work with the agency to monitor and adapt the program. In Manitoba, he speaks to more than 25 at-risk sports teams and communities a year about the dangers of smokeless tobacco (?chew?), which he has identified as a growing problem in sport.

He also educates the educators: he speaks regularly with the Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association, and he was a keynote speaker at both the Saskatchewan Physical Educators Association and presented twice at the Province of Alberta?s Perspective in Exercise, Health and Fitness Conference. He also leads workshops across the country for health care professionals, instructing them on the latest research findings on disease and injury prevention through proper activity and lifestyle practices.

He has worked with ParticipACTION, the national not-for-profit organization for enhancing physical literacy in youth. He was a primary contributor to a new ?Passport for Life? physical literacy program for Physical and Health Education Canada. He has developed new tools for assessing physical literacy, termed PLAY ? Physical Literacy Assessment Tools for Youth. Dr. Kriellaars piloted these tools in Manitoba but now they are making an impact on youth across Canada through the Sport for Life movement. Currently, he is working on a Public Health Agency of Canada initiative that will help prevent amateur sport injuries using a physical literacy approach.

It is suiting that a researcher so dedicated to healthy lifestyles and physical activity is himself so energetic. Not a week passes without Dr. Kriellaars sharing his knowledge so that communities can grow stronger and healthier. He habitually demonstrates a passion for enriching the ties between the University and Canadian communities and for that the University honours him, and thanks him for his trendsetting work.

Has the Internet Made Telemarketing for B2B Leads Obsolete ...

b2b leads

A few decades ago, nobody paid attention to the Internet. People will just cast it aside like it was just another fad waiting to be dissolved. However, these people thought wrong; the World Wide Web has grown exponentially. So large, in fact, that it can be equated to that of another universe in itself.

With this boom in using on-line means for practically almost everything, some procedures has been made obsolete. Therefore the question for today is, has the Internet made b2b leads generation telemarketing antiquated?

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO TELEMARKETING FOR B2B LEADS?

Before, b2b telemarketing has been widely used as a primary means for generating interests from a targeted business audience. Today, there is now multiple on-line methods to getting these requirements, namely:

  • Social media marketing
  • Content marketing
  • On-line newsletters
  • E-mail marketing

So where does this leave b2b telemarketing? Again, many companies consider this as an obsolete method for marketing. However, they should not yet discard the fact that it is still a useful method for leads generation.

HOW CAN TELEMARKETING OVERPOWER THE INTERNET IN B2B LEADS GENERATION?

With b2b telemarketing, speed and precision targeting are the names of the game. The World Wide Web has little methods that are fast enough when it comes to getting in touch with targeted prospects. Things like doing web chat may be fast and direct, but there are times that Internet connections are so unreliable. There are lags, and even disconnection issues that can come from time to time.

Telephone marketing is fast, direct, and is more reliable than connections supplied by Internet service providers. If there are any disconnection issues, it is easy to reconnect with the prospect as there is only minimal troubleshooting involved.

The beauty of telemarketing for b2b leads generation is the pace that you get when contacting targeted prospects. On average, a cold call will last at around three to five minutes at a time. If one plans to call prospects on an eight-hour work day, then they can call at an average of 150 businesspeople on that day.

WHAT ABOUT COSTS?

True, in this category the Internet overpowers telemarketing by a long shot. The difference between the two is that you can immediately gauge if the prospect is interested or not. Waiting periods can be reduced to a significant degree, thus shortening the sales process. Opportunities will not be wasted as the time it takes to move on to the next point of contact is decreased.

Businesses can either pick one of the two options laid out to them for their marketing campaign. Measuring the success of b2b leads generation can fall under the subject of a company?s current finances and resources. Decision makers should choose well to get the best results for their business.

If choosing one is such a hassle, there is another option wherein businesses can try and mix the two marketing processes together to create a more powerful marketing campaign. One thing is for certain, telemarketing for b2b leads is certainly not obsolete.

Mayor Bach and city council butt heads over budget

It's your money at the center of a battle between the Colorado Springs city council and Mayor Steve Bach.

Bach says city council amended his proposed budget, which he submitted back in October. The problem lies in a deficit their amendments created. In the past if a council member proposed spending more money in one area, it was up to that person to find ways to reduce spending somewhere else; that didn't happen this year.

Bach says city council flat-out recommended increasing spending, and tossed the problem of balancing the budget back at the Mayor's office. He says counselors recommended dipping into reserves if that couldn't be done. "If council doesn't change what they've already done in terms of creating a deficit I'm forced to veto that because we cannot run a deficit. I am not comfortable dipping into our reserves especially given our economy and the uncertainty going forward on our revenue," Mayor Bach told News 5.

The Mayor is asking city council to reconsider those changes or he will veto their plan. If that happens, it could create a whole new problem since city council can override the Mayor's veto with a supermajority vote.

If six of the nine council members vote to override Bach's veto, the city will move forward operating at a deficit since city council has the final say.

We did reach out to council members for their side of things, but the only person who got back to us agreed with the Mayor.

David Wygant: After Divorce; Is A Great Relationship Possible

I'm about to pose a question that we all wonder about, whether deep down or on the surface.

Most of you reading this article are divorced. Congratulations.

You've left a relationship that was dysfunctional for you, and now you have the opportunity to find a better one.

Let's first define what being single is. Being single means you have the opportunity to go find a relationship that you've never had before and be successful at it.

Now here is where it gets tricky. Notice that I used the phrase "never had before."

Sounds easy, right? You're going after a relationship you never had before. It's exciting and it almost makes you want to jump up and down.

It makes you feel really good in the morning. You wake up, and you know that today could be the day that you'll find that relationship you've never had. But the question is, does that relationship really exist?

Let's state the facts:

Most of you are divorced. Most of you have issues. As a matter of fact, all of us have issues.

So a relationship is when two people bring their suitcases full of issues to the table, mix them all together, and see if they can cohabitate together in an issue-filled relationship.

There is nothing negative about that at all. We all have our issues; we all have our stuff. It's a matter of if we can put up with each other's stuff.

See, when we're alone, we have no trouble putting up with our own stuff. We can lock ourselves down in our man caves. If we're women, we can lock ourselves in our women's caves, and we can deal with our stuff on our own.

But where it gets complicated is knowing exactly how to love your partner's stuff and love them for who they really are.

Do great relationships really exist or are they just some Hollywood pipe dream?

I've seen a few really great relationships, and they all start by putting the partner first. The man and woman, that partnership, is put before anything else. A relationship will only work if both couples make each other a priority.

It all sounds so simple, right? Then why do we mess it up so many times?

Well, there are the egos involved, and then you've got the expectations. There are fantasies involved when the children arrive, but even that is just an excuse. They are all just excuses.

When we meet somebody new, we need to learn how to love and nurture them. If you've ever read the book "The Five Love Languages" you'll understand what I'm talking about. If not, I strongly suggest it.

Understanding your next partner's love language will allow you to nurture them in the way they need to be nurtured, because in reality, we're just giant boys and girls running around wanting to be loved.

It's all so simple on paper but yet when reality hits, we never can figure out exactly how to do it.

I'm all about love. I believe in it still, even though I've had many failed relationships and divorces. I still believe it can exist.

I would like to have that one great relationship, that relationship where you put each other first, put each other on a pedestal, and really love each for who you are.

What about jobs and children? They're secondary. You can still love your job and love your children but you need to put your partner at the forefront.

In every great relationship that I've ever seen, the man and the woman put the family unit--meaning the man and the woman--first. The kids were secondary, work was secondary. It didn't make either of them a bad parent to do it that way, because it keeps them together, it keep them working as a team.

You need your partner to be your best friend, your confidante, your comrade in the battle of life. So you need to make each other first.

You're naturally going to love your children unconditionally. That goes without saying. Your children are always going to get the love that they need. Your children are going to get the attention that they need.

But at the end of the day, after work has finished and the rugrats have been tucked in, you need to really embrace the person that you're with, because that person is going to support you and go to battle with you in life.

The kids are going to grow up, become teenagers, leave the house, and not want to be a part of you anymore.

That job you love, you may get fired from. And you'll find a new job.

But think about how hard it is to find a great partner. You don't just cruise the classifieds and find another great partner the next day. Relationships are the real work.

So the next time you find somebody who you think is great, do everything the opposite way that you did it before. Make sure you nurture the relationship first. Make sure you make it a priority. Make sure that you have open communication so the two of you can feel safe and secure and amazing.

There are a lot of great relationships. My goal is to help you find your great relationship so you don't have to go through the divorce treadmill all over again.

Dodgers? spending has changed the baseball landscape

There was a time less than a year ago when Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti would identify a player he wanted but rather than making an exploratory phone call, he would just sigh and shake his head.

As the man in charge of assembling the roster for one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball in one of its biggest media markets, Colletti was shackled. Former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt not only instructed his general manager to build the team on the cheap, he told Colletti to cut payroll year after year.

So when free agents like Adrian Beltre, Cliff Lee and Albert Pujols became available, Colletti looked away, knowing he didn?t even have to make the call to the owner?s office for permission to start negotiations. He already knew the answer.

One offseason later, Colletti is still in charge of building the Dodgers roster but now works for the most feared baseball ownership group in all the land, Guggenheim Baseball Management. Because of that group?headed by Mark Walter, Stan Kasten and Magic Johnson?and its seemingly bottomless pockets, the Dodgers are being called the ?new? New York Yankees.

That rightfully concerns several rival executives, even if they won?t publicly admit it. Whether the result is signing a young player to an extension before they would prefer (think: Joey Votto, Cole Hamels) or a sudden willingness to dole out cash for a free agent, other teams?especially those in the National League (and specifically the NL West)?are reacting to what the Dodgers have become. That is, big spenders willing to write checks to get the best players in hopes of winning championships immediately.

Super agent Scott Boras had ignored the Dodgers under the McCourt ownership and jabbed the franchise for shopping in the ?fruit-and-nuts aisle? at the grocery store.

And now?

?I think they bought the store,? Boras said at the general manager meetings last week. ?I think the Dodger organization has made it clear they?re about superstars and they understand Los Angeles.?

With the Dodgers back at the top of Boras? speed dial, other teams have been forced to consider what to do with their newfound wealth.

The Dodgers changed baseball?s landscape in half a season, starting in late July when they acquired Hanley Ramirez from the Miami Marlins. Then again a month later when they took on more than a quarter of a billion dollars in salary to get Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto from the Boston Red Sox.

Both were the kind of ?bold? moves Colletti has been encouraged to consider and make under Guggenheim.

?We?ve got the freedom to think and do bold things,? Colletti said. ?As of now, we haven?t been discouraged to have any thought or not consider any player.?

That the San Francisco Giants, the Dodgers? chief rivals, have won two World Series in the past three years will make Colletti reach even further. Giants general manager Brian Sabean scoffed at the notion the Dodgers might take over the division simply by spending more than everyone else.

?I don?t think it will change the division,? Sabean said. ?Whether it?s us as the reigning world champs or them being the top spender, if you look at the history of the division, it?s outhouse and castle from year to year. You don?t necessarily have to have the best talent or the most money spent.?

All of that is true. Regardless of payroll, the NL West has seen its share of parity. But that was in a world where the Dodgers spent frugally, if at all, and nothing like the juggernaut franchise it could have been.

This is a new world. This is a baseball world where the Dodgers are going to spend like the ?old? Yankees, topping a $200 million payroll while only the Giants can even dream of competing financially within the division.

The Dodgers are already locked in for more than $190 million next season, and that figure almost certainly will rise before pitchers and catchers report to spring training in mid-February.

?That?s open to debate depending on who we think is available,? Colletti said.

The Dodgers are committed to $142 million for 2014, $98 million in 2015 and almost $90 million in each of the following two seasons, according to baseballprospectus.com. Still, Colletti is shopping for long-term pitching, maybe a third baseman and possibly an outfielder.

The question has been asked multiple times in recent months: What is the limit to the Dodgers? spending? So far, they haven?t set one.

That should be scary. Guggenheim paid a record $2.15 billion for the franchise and promised it had plenty more to shell out for players. Some people were skeptical. They shouldn?t be anymore.

The proof is in the payroll, one that is still rising with a looming TV deal set to break more records. No longer does Colletti have to wait on the sideline while the big boys on the block spend wildly. He is now the biggest and has the capital to dole out.

It?s a new time for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it?s a new time for baseball.

?I think we?d all rather play with a full deck,? Colletti said.

For the first time, he has a full 52.

HTC Deluxe press render reportedly leaks, spreads Droid DNA worldwide

When the HTC Droid DNA leaked out into the wild, we'd learned that the DLX codename was really shorthand for "Deluxe," a title that was also attached to non-Verizon models like the J Butterfly. If @evleaks is correct, that's because HTC fully intends to have a reference version of the Deluxe on the market: the frequent rumor source has posted what looks to be a press image of the international model. There isn't much of a surprise if you've seen the Droid DNA, as it preserves all the red trim while replacing the Verizon logo with HTC's own. Most other details are left out -- there's no release date or hardware differences to pick out -- but the image may be a clue that those of us who live outside of Japan and the US could get own 1080p phone before too long.
