Surprise! Consumer Internet Companies Fuel Euro Growth VC ...

Dow Jones VentureSource has released some figures about European venture capital which we should all take a look at and chew over. The headline news is something that you might not have predicted a few years ago. Given that bigger European tech companies have been largely drawn from the Enterpise/B2B space, it?s significant that consumer Internet companies are now leading the charge. But the trends also show that European tech companies are suffering from too few exit opportunities which is leading to later-stage financing rounds and less deal activity.

According to VentureSource, venture-backed companies based in Europe raised ?1.3 billion through 273 venture capital deals during the second quarter of 2012. This represents a 14% increase in capital raised. But at the same time there has been a 20% decline in deals from the same period last year.

Consumer technology services saw the greatest gains of any industry in the second quarter, raising ?493 million through 72 deals. This was more than double the ?239 million raised during the same period last year ?despite only one more deal being completed?. Almost two-thirds of the capital went to the ?consumer information services? sector, which includes social media, online entertainment and search companies.

In addition, 62% of deals in the second quarter went to early-stage companies, up from 58% in the same period last year. Early-stage companies also accounted for 32% of capital invested, on par with the second quarter of 2011. Second-round deals accounted for 19% of deal flow and 18% of capital invested, down from 25% and 28%, respectively, in the year-ago period. Later-stage deals accounted for 19% of deals, up from 17% a year earlier, and 49% of capital invested, a significant increase from the year-ago period when 39% of capital went to later-stage companies.

Also in the report:

? During the second quarter, 38 European venture-backed companies were acquired, a 34% drop in deals from the same period last year, and three companies went public, which was half the number of initial public offerings (IPOs) recorded in the second quarter of 2011.

? Through the first six months of this year, venture capital investment totaled ?2.2 billion for 550 deals, a 7% decline in capital and 10% decline in deals from the year-ago period.

? The industry trends in the second quarter largely reflect the recently released U.S. investment figures, with Internet and software companies faring well but significant declines recorded in the healthcare and energy industries.

The ?data? market is also buoyant. Business and financial services companies raised ?144 million for 35 deals during the second quarter, a 58% increase in investment despite a 27% decline in deals. The business support services sector, driven by interest in marketing, advertising and data management companies, raised ?108 million through 26 deals during the second quarter, double the amount invested in the same period last year despite a 28% drop in deal flow.

The ?IT? industry ? or traditional software ? raised ?215 million for 73 deals during the second quarter, an 18% decline in investment and a 17% drop in deal activity compared with the same period last year. The software sector ? traditionally the most popular investment area in IT ? fared well, raising ?136 million through 54 deals, a 24% increase in investment despite an 8% drop in deals. This shows that traditional enterprise software is not quite dead in the age of the Cloud, although the drop in deal activity is telling.

Significantly, Anne Malterre, European research manager, Dow Jones VentureSource puts the lack of deal activity combined with investment growth down to a ?lacklustre exit environment? keeping companies private for longer. The larger financing rounds come from companies need to grow, thus boosting the amount invested.

However, the data shows what we?ve been observing on the ground: VCs increased the percentage of deals done for early-stage companies and their ?interest in online start-ups remained strong.?

So something has to give, somehow, at some point in terms of deal flow. Quite what that is remains to seen, but the likelihood is that this year marks the end of the recent cycle and the beginning of a new one where companies wait things out until the next round of exit opportunities present themselves. Just two examples of the end of the cycle are the recent exits of Playfire and Moonfruit. There will be others.

Helicopters, artillery fire over Syria's Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Helicopter gunships opened fire over Aleppo on Sunday and the thud of artillery boomed across neighborhoods as government forces and rebels fought for control of Syria's second city.

Opposition activists reported clashes in several rebel-held districts in the morning in what could herald the start of a decisive phase in the battle for Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub.

International peace envoy Kofi Annan and other foreign leaders said the situation in Aleppo served to emphasize the need for a negotiated political solution to the conflict in Syria, now in its 16th month.

A Syrian opposition leader urged foreign allies to circumvent the divided U.N. Security Council and intervene directly in the struggle to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

"Our friends and allies will bear responsibility for what is happening in Aleppo if they do not move soon," said Abdelbasset Sida, the head of the Syrian National Council, the main alliance for opposition to Assad.

Assad's forces, including tank columns, have been massing for an assault to wrest back neighborhoods from rebel units and skirmishing has been going on for days in districts such as southwestern Saleheddine.

One opposition activist said he had seen tanks and armored troop carriers heading towards Salaheddine on Sunday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring organization, said fighting was taking place early on Sunday in central districts of the city and a neighborhood on the western outskirts.

Rebel-held areas visited by a Reuters reporter appeared to be deserted by residents. Fighters were using houses - some of them clearly abandoned in a hurry, with food still in the fridges - as their bases.

A jet fighter flew over the city shortly after dawn.

CRUCIAL TEST

On the approaches to Aleppo from the north, many villagers were still shopping or tending their fields. But fighters from the rebel Free Syrian Army were also in evidence.

One man in his 40s, carrying his family on a motorcycle, said he was fleeing the fighting in the city.

"We are living in a war zone," he told Reuters. "I and my relatives are just going back and forth, trying to stay away from the fighting. We left Aleppo when we saw smoke and helicopters firing."

The battle for the city of 2.5 million people is seen as a crucial test for a government that has committed military resources to holding control of its two main power centers, Aleppo in the north and the capital Damascus.

"If the regime is defeated, it will be a decisive stage for Syria," the Observatory's Rami Abdulrahman said.

While neither side has managed to gain the upper hand, the uprising is being watched anxiously outside Syria amid concern that sectarian conflict could spill over its borders.

Minority Alawites have dominated through more than 40 years of Assad family rule in Syria, which has a Sunni Muslim majority.

Military experts believe that while Assad's more powerful forces will overcome the rebels in Aleppo and other cities, it risks loss of control in the countryside because the loyalty of large sections of the army is in doubt.

The British-based Observatory said 26 people were killed in Aleppo on Saturday. Across Syria it reported fighting in Deraa, the cradle of the revolution, Homs, the scene of some of the bloodiest combat, and Hama, which killed a total of 190 people, including 41 soldiers.

Video footage provided by the Observatory showed smoke rising over apartment blocks in the city into a hazy sky on Saturday. The sound of sporadic gunfire could be clearly heard.

FRENCH PUSH

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande said he would keep trying to convince Assad's main defenders, Russia and China, which have Security Council vetoes, to support harder sanctions against him.

"I will once more address Russia and China so that they recognize there would be chaos and civil war if Bashar al-Assad isn't soon stopped," Hollande said.

The Syrian government knew it was doomed and would use force until the very end, Hollande said.

"The role of the member states of the U.N. Security Council is to step in as quickly as possible."

Russia played down speculation that it might offer Assad asylum, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying on Saturday Moscow had no such agreement and was not even thinking about it.

Russia has said international support for Syrian rebels would lead to "more blood" and the government could not be expected to willingly give in to its opponents.

It has also said it would not allow searches of Russian-flagged ships under new European Union sanctions governing vessels suspected of carrying weapons to Syria.

The increase in fighting in Aleppo follows a bomb attack on July 18 that killed Assad's defense minister and three other senior officials in Damascus, a development that led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

THE DAY'S ACTION

So, two more swimming world records were broken on Sunday and Spain's highly favored football team tumbled out of medal contention after losing to Honduras.

American Dana Vollmer won the 100 butterfly in a world record and was followed by Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa, who set a world mark to win the 100-meter breaststroke.

The biggest surprise of the day came from France's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, which upset the favored United States and Australia.

TWITTER TRASH TALK

Hope Solo's angry Twitter rants are U.S. coach Pia Sundhage's latest challenge.

The U.S. women's soccer team won 3-0 Saturday against Colombia, but Solo, the U.S. goalie, took exception on Twitter to comments by her former colleague Brandi Chastain, who is now a TV commentator.

"The game has changed from a decade ago," Solo tweeted.

Sundhage says she spoke with Solo and reminded her that the most important thing now is the team's next Olympic game against North Korea on Tuesday. But the coach says she's not going to bother stopping her star goalie from tweeting.

"It's all about the next game," Sundhage said.

EYEING THE ODDS

Determined to see a British sports book, I discovered William Hill in Euston. It's nothing like Las Vegas.

Think more like an empty OTB. One television showed the Olympics. The rest were airing dog racing.

But the variety was interesting. They've got bundled bets such as Usain Bolt winning the 100 and 200 meters and the U.S.A men and women's basketball teams both winning gold at 9-to-4. A soccer bet at 8-to-1 bundles the Brazilian men and the American women to win the gold.

The overwhelming favorite is David Rudisha of Kenya in the 800 meters at 1-to-12. The next closest is the American women's basketball team at 1-to-10.

For a big payoff, go for the "Olympic Football Yes/No." Pick all six correctly, including if all six substitutes will be used in the Britain vs. Cameroon women's soccer match, and it pays 33-to-1.

"I was nervous," she admitted later. "It was nerve-wracking to do the bars last."

Tweddle, at 27, is the oldest member of the team and Britain's most decorated gymnast. She's never won an Olympic medal, however.

Her performance Sunday helped Britain make the team finals, four years after they missed the last slot at the Beijing Games.

"We know we're not going to be able to touch USA, Russia, China," Tweddle said. "We are the level below them. Four years ago, we wouldn't be looking at that, so we are getting better."

IT'S OKAY, ROOMIE

Jordyn Wieber has released a statement of support for close friend Aly Raisman, who bumped her out of the all-around gymnastics finals.

Wieber, the reigning world champion, had to watch Raisman's performance knowing a strong showing would keep her out of the individual competition. She left the arena sobbing after missing the cut.

"It was hard because of course I wanted that spot. But I also wanted Aly to do her best for the team," she said.

The two are roommates here at the London Games. Wieber will be relegated to cheerleader now as Gabby Douglas and Raisman compete for the all-around title.

"It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics," she said. "I'm proud of Aly and Gabby and happy that they reached the all-around and I was able to help the team get to the Finals. It was always going to be close between the three of us doing all-around and in the end it is what it is."

2012 College Graduates are Moving Back Home : National ...

By Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D. and Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D.

This year over 1.75 million college students walked across the stage to pick up their diplomas. Seniors everywhere were excited to graduate as parents were thinking about words of wisdom to impart.

With the scarcity of jobs and school loans due, it?s going to be harder than ever for these kidults to engage in adult roles. If your brand new graduates are boomeranging back home, here?s some practical insight to share with them:

Face uncertainty with a positive attitude. You can?t change the slow economic recovery but you can have control over how you handle it. You may feel frustrated that you don?t have a job or anxious about the future ? these reactions are common and normal. Try to face your feelings directly as you explore situations that will work for you.

Take control of your circumstances. It?ll help you focus and gain perspective when you spend time identifying your inner strengths and external resources. If you know that what you want is within your reach, keep after it no matter how hard it gets. Be sure to recognize the difference between what you can manage and what you can?t.

Turn to those who support you. Family and friends care about you and you can count on them to cheer you on. They?ll be there to help because they love you and want you succeed. And remember, as you move ahead, you don?t have to do it alone ? ask for help whenever you need it.

Make a public commitment. Talk with others about your intentions and you?ll create a strong reality that?ll motivate you. As you begin to set and reach short term objectives toward longer range goals, you?ll become even more determined. Although there may be stumbling blocks along the way, never give up.

Rely on your instincts. Listen to the advice of those you trust. But look inside for answers and find your own voice. Don?t jump at money or do what others think you should ? define success on your own terms. If you feel you?re moving in the direction of where you belong, believe in what you?re doing. Emotional discomfort can be an opportunity to grow.

Discover your passion. With our society and the job market in flux, you may have to reorder your priorities for now. Keep busy and try to make a contribution as a volunteer or mentor, where you can use you talents and energy to be of service to others. And tap into your compassion and courage to find a larger purpose.

Increase your capacity for resiliency. At times it may be difficult to maintain composure under trying circumstances. Take one day at a time, and call on your faith or spirituality. Develop strategies to manage stress and build your confidence. Step by step, you?ll turn your hopes and dreams into reality.

Your recent grads may not be sure of what road they?re on or whether they should have taken it. Perhaps they?re having second thoughts: if only I had applied to law school or what if I had majored in engineering? It?s common and normal to have ambivalent emotions ? the desire to hold on and to let go, excitement as well as fear about the future.

The 20s are still the defining decade of adult life and your kidults are living with an unprecedented amount of uncertainty. Let them know you have their back. Encourage them to reach deep for the resolve to face their situation squarely ? in time, they can?t help but grow from the challenges.

Biden: GOP Considers Teachers Selfish

DETROIT -- Vice President Joe Biden told a gathering of more than 3,000 teachers on Sunday that Mitt Romney and fellow Republicans think that teachers are selfish.

"They characterize you as only caring about yourself," Biden said at the American Federation of Teachers conference. "But the fact of the matter is, I don't think they know you. I don't think [Romney] knows you."

The AFT speech was Biden's latest address to a national union -- he earlier spoke to the national police union in Florida and the national firefighters union in Pennsylvania as well as the National Education Association, the other large teachers' union.

In each of those previous speeches, he used similar language to make the case that Democrats are far more attuned to the needs and concerns of the unions' constituencies.

The vice president suggested that Romney doesn't understand the sacrifices teachers make in their personal lives for the betterment of their students when considering the demands teacher unions make for higher wages and better benefits.

"How many other people have to do a difficult job and have to deal with that child from a broken home whose mother or father just got arrested?" Biden said to resounding applause. "How many of you have to do that every single day, and so much more?"

Home Staging: Making Your Home Sellable | Real Estate Home ...

You may have already read the importance of clearing out clutter. Well, that?s because it can?t be stressed enough. It is one of the most important aspects of making your home appealing to buyers, for two reasons. First, not just papers and dishes, clutter includes decorations and furniture too. Too much of it can block a persons view of the house itself. If everywhere they look they see stuff, a buyer doesn?t see your home. It is imperative that they have a clear view, or they won?t want to buy. Second, all that clutter screams personality. Your personality. And this is not what a buyer wants to see. When someone is looking over a home, what they need to do in order to be motivated to buy is to imagine themselves living in that home. If the house is so full of the current owner, a potential buyer can?t get past that and make the mental leap to visualizing themselves in the home.

Make Your Home?Sell?With Home Staging

Because of this, some sellers choose to box up a lot of their personal goods and put them in professional storage. This gets it right out of the house, so even the boxes aren?t clogging up the spare rooms and closets, which are also important selling features.

It is also important to fix things around the home. Keep in mind how well the doors around your home work, as buyers will almost always open closets and cupboards. If the doors are sticky or squeak, that gives a bad first impression. Obviously, your front door is the first candidate for a good hinge-oiling.

While you certainly don?t want to enter into major renovations, a new coat of paint can really brighten up a home and make it more appealing. Consider both the outside and inside of your home. And as tempting as it is to choose trendy colors or things you are personally attracted to, neutral tones are best. White or off-white are your safest bets as they will help a home appear bright, and give a new owner a good base if they wish to paint the home more uniquely.

Speaking of a bright home, be sure to leave all the lights on when your home is being shown. Open all the curtains, too, so that viewers feel that your home is bright and welcoming, and they can see clearly. Dusting every surface also helps your home look brighter.

Consider smell, an important sense that impacts our first impression. Do a good deep cleaning, especially if you have pets or smoke indoors. Air the home out a bit and you may wish to install some air fresheners, but be sure not to choose anything too overwhelming, as more and more people are sensitive to scents.

Good luck with showing your home!
