PFT: Lewis says Bengals not mature enough to tweet

With the Olympics starting, Friday provided a perfect opportunity for Congress to renew pressure on the NFL and NFLPA regarding the ongoing absence of HGH testing, a standard component of Olympic drug testing.

Four members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (two from each party) sent a letter Friday to Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith urging them to implement last year?s agreement to conduct HGH testing.

?Without HGH testing, the performance enhancing drug provisions in your collective bargaining agreement will not be able to effectively deter the use of this drug,? the letter from Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Henry Waxman (D-Cal.), Mary Bono Mack (R-Cal.), and G.K. Butterfield? (D-N.C.) states.? ?And this failure sends a terrible message to young athletes and fans that player safety and a level playing field are not priorities.?

The letter explains that Congress ?has been reluctant to engage more deeply in this matter, believing this is a problem best solved by allowing labor and management to follow through on their agreement.?? But with no specific threat/promise to intervene, the NFL and NFLPA can continue to drag their feet.

And while it?s widely perceived that the NFLPA has delayed the process by insisting on a population study to account for the physiological differences between football players and Olympic athletes generally, the league hasn?t done much if anything to force the NFLPA to honor it?s written commitment to submit to testing.? Frankly, it?s almost as if the league is content not to push forward with testing, as long as it?s the union and not the league that gets the bulk of the blame.

If, after all, the HGH problem is worse than believed, many players will be subject to suspension.? Perhaps more importantly, if players who are using HGH to recover from injuries suddenly must stop, then they won?t recover from injuries as quickly and the teams will have a harder time putting a product on the field.

Regardless of the reasons, something doesn?t seem right.? If the NFLPA is dragging its feet, the NFL has remedies at its disposal to push the issue forward, whether under the CBA or before the National Labor Relations Board of even in court.? But the NFL to date hasn?t used them.

For now, the league has responded to the letter with a promise to respond later.? ?We appreciate and share the concern of the committee,? the league said in a statement, ?and will respond to the letter as soon as possible.?

That?s not really much of a response.

Thus, if Congress wants to see HGH testing in the NFL, it?s time to stop huffing and puffing and time to start holding hearings and putting people under oath and finding out how deep this rabbit hole goes and why the NFL and NFLPA apparently aren?t interested in plugging it up.

BMW's C Evolution electric scooter does 62 miles on a charge, maxes out at 75 mph

All things considered, we think it's safe to say BMW very rarely disappoints with its latest road-friendly creations, and one of the outfit's most recent concoctions is this eco-friendly C Evolution electric scooter. According to the German company, the prototype two-wheeler's quite close to hitting its final production stages, noting "it might soon become a part of everyday road traffic in cities throughout the world" and that it is "outstanding in terms of performance, functionality and design." On paper, the C Evolution appears to be rather promising, with BMW also claiming the environmental hog can ride out about 62 miles on a single charge -- all while being able to reach max speeds of around 75 mph. No word yet on how much you'll have to save up for one of these, but for now, there's a video of the C Evo in action waiting on you just past the break.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. being treated in Mayo Clinic

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. has been admitted to the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to be evaluated for depression and gastrointestinal ailments, the congressman's office said on Friday in a statement released by the clinic.

The statement came more than two weeks after the Illinois Democrat, son of civil rights leader and former presidential candidate, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, was said by his doctor to be undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder."

The younger Jackson, 47, announced in late June that he had taken a leave from office two weeks earlier for treatment of what was then described as exhaustion.

Amid mounting political pressure to disclose more information about his medical condition, Jackson said on July 5 through a statement that his problems were more serious than previously believed, adding he needed extended in-patient treatment for unspecified "physical and emotional ailments."

On July 11, his physician said the congressman was receiving intensive care for a "mood disorder" and was expected to make a full recovery.

The statement on Friday marked the first time that Jackson, who is seeking re-election to a 10th term in the House of Representatives in the November 6 election, acknowledged he was being evaluated for depression.

"Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has arrived at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues," the statement said without elaborating.

The statement did not say whether the gastrointestinal issues being evaluated were connected to a gastric bypass surgery Jackson underwent in 2004 for weight loss.

It said further information would be released as Jackson's evaluation proceeded.

Jackson's Republican opponent in November, Brian Woodworth, said in early July that Jackson had an obligation to clarify his situation. Woodworth could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday night.

Jackson has been the subject of a congressional ethics committee probe over an alleged bribe offered to former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich by a Jackson supporter in 2008.

The offer was intended to entice Blagojevich into appointing Jackson to President Barack Obama's vacant U.S. Senate seat. Jackson has admitted to lobbying for the seat but has denied knowing about any money offered to Blagojevich, who was convicted of public corruption charges and is in prison.

Two fellow Illinois Democrats, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and U.S. Representative Luis Gutierrez, said this month that Jackson owed voters from his South Side Chicago district an explanation.

They compared the congressman's situation with those of stricken Illinois Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and Illinois Democratic U.S. Representative Bobby Rush.

After Kirk suffered a stroke in January, his doctors held news conferences about his condition, and the senator later provided a video depicting his rehabilitation and showing him speaking and struggling to walk on a treadmill.

Rush had surgery for throat cancer, and Gutierrez said at the time, "We knew where to find him."

Turkey warns Assad that he must keep Kurds in check, or risk intervention

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan said earlier this week that if the Syrian Kurds use their base to launch a terror campaign on Turkey, intervention in Syria would be 'our most natural right.'

By Roy Gutman,?McClatchy Newspapers / July 27, 2012

President Bashar al-Assad, facing a growing rebel presence in Aleppo, Syria?s largest city and its commercial hub, has turned control of parts of northern Syria over to militant Kurds who Turkey has long branded as terrorists, prompting concern that Istanbul might see the development as a reason to send troops across its border with Syria.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in comments late on July 25, said that Turkey would not accept an entity in northern Syria governed by the Iraq-based Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which has long waged a guerrilla war against Turkey, and its Syrian affiliate, the Democratic Union Party.

He said the two groups had built a ?structure in northern Syria? that for Turkey means ?a structure of terror.?

?It is impossible for us to look favorably at such a structure,? he said in an interview with a private television channel.

He warned that if Syrian Kurdish militants mount a terror operation or some other form of cross-border provocation against Turkey, ?then intervening would be our most natural right.?

The prospect of a PKK-dominated zone in northern Syria appears to be an unintended consequence of the civil war now raging between Assad and rebels of the Free Syrian Army, who are Arab Sunni Muslims who?ve been fighting, with US and other nations? backing, to topple Assad?s government.

Assad withdrew forces last week from six predominantly Kurdish towns and handed control to the Kurdish militants in what appears to be an effort to bolster his defenses at Aleppo, which became the scene of sustained fighting last week for the first time since the anti-Assad uprising began more than 16 months ago. Assad also reportedly has pulled forces from the Idlib region of northeastern Syria and moved them to Aleppo in preparation for what some say will be a pitched battle for the city.

Tens of thousands of residents of Aleppo have fled in anticipation of the battle. Reports from anti-Assad groups indicate that thousands of pro-Assad and rebel fighters are converging on the city, which many believe Assad must hold if he is to maintain control of the country.

The developments in Kurdish areas, however, suggest that no matter who wins the civil war, the fighting is shifting the politics of Syria and its neighbors in ways that cannot be predicted.

The establishment of a Kurdish-ruled zone inside Syria has long been a goal of the Kurdish population. Leaders of the anti-Assad opposition have said in recent days that they would oppose such a zone, and Kurdish fighters have said they would not allow the Free Syrian Army to operate in the region.

Officially, the Democratic Union Party is sharing power over six towns ? Kobane, Derek, Amude, Efrin, Sari Kani and Girke Lege ? with the Kurdish National Council, an umbrella organization of anti-Assad Kurdish groups. In fact, the Kurdish militants have raised the PKK flag over public buildings or have used force to haul down their rivals? flag, Kurdish news media in the Iraqi Kurdish capital of Erbil reported Thursday.

The PKK affiliate also controls stretches of the Syrian border, including a key crossing into territory of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the increasingly autonomous province in neighboring Iraq.?

The stakes are enormous in this otherwise obscure region. Turkey fears that a Syrian Kurdish state run by the PKK will radicalize its own restive Kurds, who comprise 12 million, or one-sixth, of its 74 million population. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of Syrian Kurdish fighters have taken part in PKK raids inside Turkey over the years.

The development also could worsen the political situation inside Iraq, where the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government maintains chilly relations with the central government in Baghdad, but ever closer relations with Turkey. Iraq?s prime minister, Nouri al Maliki, a Shiite Muslim, is a supporter of Assad, whose Alawite religious sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Baghdad and the Kurdish government disagree over a range of other issues, from oil export policy to who should govern cities where the population is split between Kurds and Arabs.?

Kurdistan?s president, Massoud Barzani, tried to head off a Democratic Union Party takeover several weeks ago, when he hosted the 16 or so groups comprising the Kurdish National Council, together with the Syrian National Council, also an umbrella body, at a meeting in Erbil. Many now believe the arrangement he brokered actually paved the way for the PKK takeover.

In a move some analysts said might be intended to undercut PKK influence in Syria, Barzani announced Sunday that the Kurdistan Regional Government would dispatch back to Syria, allegedly to fill a security vacuum, some of the Kurdish Syrian soldiers who?ve deserted into Iraq to escape the civil war. Kurdish media reported that some 650 Kurdish soldiers already returned to Syria last week, and there were suggestions that the Kurdistan Regional Government?s own military, the peshmerga, is considering entering Syria as well. That move is opposed by the PKK, local Kurdish newspapers have reported.

?Peshmerga forces are our brothers and relatives and we do not have any problems with them,? Salih Muslim, a Democratic Union Party leader, told the English-language daily Rudaw. ?But Syrian Kurdistan does not need assistance from the peshmerga forces at this point and if the need arises we will ask for their help.??

Assad forces still control Qamishli, a city of well over 400,000 and the unofficial capital of the predominantly Kurdish northern region. But a decision by Assad to allow the PKK to take over there as well could move Barzani to intervene on Turkey?s behalf. Such a development could spark a reaction in Baghdad, whose authority over Iraq?s international relations would be directly challenged by a peshmerga move into Syria.

Turkey has shown little hesitance to invade neighboring countries in response to PKK attacks on Turkish targets. In October, Turkish aircraft and troops crossed into Iraq to hunt down PKK guerrillas who?d killed 29 members of Turkey?s security forces and five civilians in a series of raids in southern Turkey.

McClatchy special correspondent Abdulla Hawaz contributed from Erbil, Iraq.

Written Interview: Zoe Kazan (?Ruby Sparks?) | Go Into The Story

An IndieWire interview with actress-screenwriter Zoe Kazan about the movie which she wrote and in which she co-stars Ruby Sparks:

How long had you been cooking up this screenplay?

I had the original idea in the summer of 2009, and wrote about 20 pages and then put it away because I could see what the broad comedy of the story was. But I knew that?s not what I wanted to write. I wanted to let it sit around with me for a little longer before I really started to do it in earnest. Then I did ?The Behanding of Spokane? on Broadway in the Spring of 2010 and I had time during the day, so I just tackled it. I wrote it in like three weeks and sent it off to producers.

?-

What happened in that in-between stage during the writing process that gave you the confidence to delve into the more dramatic aspect of the work?

I think that this movie is not autobiographical at all, but it?s very personal. It draws on a lot of things that I?ve experienced in relationships where there?s been a power in balance, and where I?ve felt that the person I was with loved some idea of me, and not the actual person. That?s a hard thing to write about. The movie goes to a pretty dark emotional place. I just really wanted to be careful before I started writing that I knew exactly what I was trying to write, and that I was in control of the story. I didn?t make an outline for this movie. I really felt like they were speaking to me, so I wanted to be in the right shape to receive them. Sometimes when you clamp down, the muse doesn?t speak to you.

Salvatore Cordileone, Gay Marriage Opponent And Prop. 8 Creator, Named Archbishop Of San Francisco (VIDEO)

The Vatican dealt a huge blow to the Bay Area's fight for gay rights on Friday, naming Salvatore Cordileone--one of the California's leading opponents of same-sex marriage and a creator of Proposition 8--the Archbishop of San Francisco.

Cordileone has served as the bishop of Oakland since 2009. In a Vatican announcement on Friday morning, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Cordileone to his new post across the Bay.

"I am pleased to welcome Archbishop-elect Cordileone," said the departing Archbishop George Niederauer during the announcement. "And to assure him of our prayers, loyalty, support and cooperation, as well as our friendship and affection."

(SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO)

Cordileone will officially take his post on October 4. As Archbishop, he will oversee bishops in San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Sacramento, Reno, Oakland, Stockton, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Reno and Salt Lake City.

Cordileone made headlines in 2008 when he helped draft Proposition 8, calling same-sex marriage "a plot by the evil one" to destroy the world during a radio interview. According to ABC, he personally donated at least $6,000 to the 2008 ban, and is currently the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.

His appointment to the San Francisco position came as a surprise and immediately drew controversy from the gay community.

"This isn't a marriage made in heaven," said state assemblyman Tom Ammiano to the San Francisco Chronicle. Ammiano represents San Francisco and is gay.

The Huffington Post contacted Most Holy Redeemer Church, a parish in the Castro known for its inclusive community, for a statement. Father Brian Costello, the pastor at the parish, said that the church did not yet have a comment, but that he would be sharing a few words about the appointment at Sunday mass.

Watch CBS's video on Salvatore Cordileone's appointment below:

5 Digital Marketing Metrics That Matter

Marc Poirier is the co-founder and CMO of marketing at Acquisio, where he leads all sales and marketing activities. He often speaks at events like SES, and writes columns and articles for publications like Search Engine Watch and SES Magazine. Follow him @marcpoirier.

Marketing is currently in a state of evolution where it is dispensing (again) with the old, and introducing the new. So if digital marketers who buy media are hung up on last-click attribution they are missing so much of the big picture.

They need to start looking at the role of media as an introducer and as an influencer, rather than just a last-click deal closer. They also have to start looking at customer engagement and its influence.

SEE ALSO: Which Ad Attribution Model Should You Use?

Here are five metrics that can help a digital marketer take these new shifts into consideration and better handle their daily bid management routine.

1. Bounce Rate

Monitoring how different ads or keywords generate different bounce rates can make a huge difference in your optimization efforts. Traffic sent to your landing page, homepage, or to an internal page on your website should yield important differences in bounce rates. You will need to bid down on bounce rates that are one standard deviation above the average, and bid up on lower ones.

Don?t abandon low-converting properties with a low bounce rate, because the reality is that you?ve managed to start an interaction with someone that could turn into something a lot more important than you may have first anticipated.

2. Average Page Views Per Visit

You can really measure how engaged your visitors are at this point by measuring how deep into your site they will go. By measuring engagement at this level, you?re seeing an indicator that you are beginning to influence, even if this does not immediately turn into a conversion.

When people find content that means something to them, they keep going deeper, and we know that the trend leans towards them sharing content they enjoy with their friends. These are people who may actually end up influencing more sales, and knowing what keywords are successful in this endeavor will help you to build an even larger customer base.

3. Average Cost Per Page View

This metric is absolutely critical to publishers, because it allows them to reach out to new audiences and turn a profit. The publisher model is to sell ad space, and knowing what a given page will yield in terms of revenue allows them to reach out to customers via paid channels in order to generate more revenue.

This means that if a publisher knows their revenue per page view is $0.50, then they must keep their cost per page view below $0.50

Let?s say a publisher pays an average cost per page view of $0.39 and they generated 100,000 page views for a period of time. This means that, by using this metric, publishers can now drive traffic to their site from search campaigns and measure immediate success in terms of profitability. Here?s the formula:

  • Revenue per page view ? cost per page view * number of page views
    This looks like: $0.50 ? $0.39 * 100,000
    $0.11 * 100,000
    or $11,000 in profits

At this rate, bidding to an average cost per page view of $0.39 is generating a margin.

4. Average Time on Site

Are you reaching your customers? Are you speaking to them, and are they responding by spending time on your site? If, for example, you have a video on your site that is three minutes long, you?ll want to see that you?ve reached your audience for at least that long.

This is not just about how many page views you are generating, but the level of trust your customers are starting to put in your brand, and how curious they are about you. Bidding based on how much time people invest on your site will help you to automatically focus your efforts. Use this metric in combination with bounce rate and page views per visit for a complete picture.

5. Rate of Return Visitors

This is one of the most important metrics in measuring customer engagement. A higher rate of return for a specific keyword, or set of keywords, is good reason to focus more closely on those visitors. Because we?re often so focused on the last click when buying media, we forget to focus on the ones who are returning to our site, and we don?t give them what they need to convert.

Understanding that consumers ?browse the aisles? on the web as much as they do in a store gives you a reason to look more closely at those return visitors, and concentrate on assessing their true value. You will most likely find that keywords with a high rate of return visitors are ones that are deeply influencing the sales cycle.

More than ever, people need to trust brands before they will make a purchase, and if you are able to show them that you are willing to make the investment into having that conversation with them, then you are showing them that you?re willing to go that extra mile for their business.

With any marketing campaign, what?s at stake is the big picture, and it?s time to start making use of the technology that?s currently available to us and start looking at how each channel is influencing the other. Knowing which ads represent influencers, introducers, or closers, is absolutely critical to understanding how the aforementioned metrics are working in concert with your overall marketing strategy.
