China shows no support for Security Council vote

POSTED: 03:18 a.m. HST, Jul 19, 2012

BEIJING (AP) ? China showed no clear support for new U.N. Security Council measures aimed at ending Syria's civil war, while saying Thursday it condemned the bombing that killed top Syrian officials and wanted an immediate cease-fire.

Russia already has indicated it would veto the proposed text, and fellow permanent Security Council member China has vetoed two past actions with Russia.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been visiting Beijing to convey to President Hu Jintao an urgent need for international action.

The Chinese foreign ministry statement issued Thursday evening said China opposes all forms of terrorism and violence and that it "strongly" condemned the bombing Wednesday in Damascus that killed Syria's defense minister and his deputy.

"China is deeply worried about the rising tensions in Syria," the statement said. "China once again called on all related parties in Syria to cease fire immediately."

The brief statement did not mention the Security Council vote but shows China has not changed its stance even as Syria's violence has escalated and Western nations have urged tougher action against President Bashar Assad's government.

The new Syria resolution threatens non-military sanctions against Assad's regime if he doesn't withdraw troops and heavy weapons from populated areas within 10 days. The text is tied to Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict.

Russia, a close Syrian ally, has said it will veto any Chapter 7 resolution.

Unlike Russia, China does not have longstanding strategic ties to Assad's government, but Beijing opposes setting precedents that could potentially be applied to its troubled western regions of Tibet and Xinjiang. China feels burned by Western intervention in Libya, believing that the U.S. and European powers over-interpreted a U.N. resolution to attack the government of Moammar Gadhafi, not just protect Libyan civilians.

The state-run Global Times newspaper's Chinese edition said in an editorial Thursday that Beijing should continue to align itself with Russia in voting in the U.N. Security Council.

The paper said that no matter how the situation unfolds in Syria, Beijing should maintain its position of opposing external military intervention.

"The West only wants a result that benefits their interest, and does not care if the process is peaceful," the newspaper said. "Yesterday's bloodshed in Damascus has made the West very excited. We just want to say one thing here: no matter how the Syrian situation develops later, let the process be less painful for the Syrian people."

Facebook shares drop after news of their user base reportedly dropping

Facebook shares were trading above $30 for a few weeks, but they dropped earlier this week, where they closed on Tuesday afternoon at a month-low of just $28.09. Facebook stock dropped 0.55-percent on Tuesday, after a huge 8.6-percent fall the day before.

?

?

Zynga shares were also hit, as the company is closely tied into the success of the Facebook platform, where they saw a drop of 5-percent on Tuesday, closing at a year-low of $4.58. The cause of these drops come after Capstone analyst Rory Maher released a report claiming Facebook's U.S. user base declined 1.1-percent over the last six months, as well as the European Facebook user base experiencing decline.

?

But, with 900 million monthly active users, Facebook can't see continuous growth - there will be stages of stagnation in their user growth, and maybe we're seeing the early signs of this. Looking into the future, Facebook's areas of growth seem to be international. Japan, Russia and China are their next markets to concentrate on.

Neil Armstrong still chooses the moon

Forty-three years ago, Neil Armstrong moved slowly down the ladder.? He was in no hurry.? He would be stepping onto a small world that had never been touched by life.? A landscape where no leaf had ever drifted, no insect had ever scurried, where no blade of green had ever waved, where even the raging fury of a thermonuclear blast would sound no louder than a falling snowflake.

Across a vacuum-wide 240,000 miles, billions of eyes were transfixed on black-and-white televisions. They were watching this ghostly figure moving phantomlike, closer and closer, and then, three and a half feet above the moon's surface, jump off the ladder.? Neil Armstrong's boots hit the moon at 10:56 p.m. ET, July 20, 1969.

All motion stopped. He spoke: "That?s one small step for a man ? one giant leap for mankind."

Lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin stayed aboard Eagle to keep watch on all the lander's systems.? The LM was Aldrin?s responsibility, and as soon as it was safe for him to leave their lander, he came down the ladder and joined Armstrong.

    1. Astronaut awestruck by view of southern lights

Shimmering auroras in the night sky are amazing to behold, but nothing prepared one NASA astronaut for seeing the celestial lights dance over Earth from above.

    2. Handicapping the commercial space race
    3. Alien world might be a scorched Earth
    4. Declassified 'UFO' files don't prove alien life

?Beautiful, beautiful!? Magnificent desolation,? Aldrin said with feeling. He stared at a sky that was the darkest of blacks. No blue. No green. No birds flying across an airless landscape.? There were many shades of gray and areas of utter black where rocks cast their shadows from an unfiltered sun, but no real color.? And there was the lack of gravity.? They seemed to weigh a little more than nothing.? In spite of their cumbersome spacesuits, both astronauts found moving about in the one-sixth gravity exhilarating and described the experience as floating.

They wanted to run and make leaps that would be impossible to do on Earth, where they would each weigh 360 pounds with their suits and life-support backpacks. On the moon, in its one-sixth gravity, they weighed only 60 pounds, but they still possessed body mass that restricted their ability to move. If they started to jog, the mass and velocity created kinetic energy, and stopping quickly was impossible.? They soon discovered that "bunny hops" in the suits worked well.

Neil had the camera and while Buzz went about setting up the experiments, he turned and looked for Earth, the true oasis of shifting colors in the solar system.? It appeared far larger from the moon than did the moon from Earth.? And it was many times brighter.? Sunlight made it so by splashing off the bright clouds and blue oceans.? It was hope.? It was the warmest port in this corner of the universe.

Twenty-one hours after they landed on the moon they fired Eagle?s ascent engine and headed home.

They were back on Earth three days later.

It has been 43 years since Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the moon.? Ten more astronauts would follow him and Buzz to the lunar surface.

Slideshow: 'We choose to go to the moon'

Today, Neil Armstrong ? first to walk on the moon, first to fly an emergency landing from space, a man with experience as a test pilot as well as an engineering professor ? is concerned about America?s space program.

He simply thinks that NASA is going nowhere fast. He's worried that the space agency is outsourcing thousands of high-tech jobs to Russia, leaving no direct way for astronauts to go from the United States to the International Space Station. He fears that the space station could experience a catastrophic failure with little support from the country that assembled it in orbit.

Neil thinks we should not only fly our own rockets and spacecraft, but use those vehicles to return to the moon in affordable, incremental, cumulative steps. Here's his congressional testimony on the subject, updated in an email he sent me last week:

"Americans have visited and examined six locations on Luna, varying in size from a suburban lot to a small township. That leaves more than 14 million square miles yet to explore.

"The lunar vicinity is an exceptional location to learn about traveling to more distant places.?? Largely removed from Earth gravity, and Earth?s magnetosphere, it provides many of the challenges of flying far from Earth.? But communication delays with Earth are less than two seconds, permitting Mission Control on Earth to play an important and timely role in flight operations.

  1. Then and now

Forty-three years ago, on July 19, 1969, the Apollo 11 spacecraft entered lunar orbit, and the crew prepared for the first-ever landing on the moon. "There's no substitute for actually being here," mission commander Neil Armstrong said.

One year ago, on July 19, 2011, the shuttle Atlantis undocked from the International Space Station, marking the shuttle fleet's final departure from the orbital outpost. "Farewell, ISS," Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson said. "Make us proud."

"In the case of a severe emergency, such as Jim Lovell?s Apollo 13, Earth is only three days travel time away.? Learning how to fly to, and remain at, Earth-Moon Lagrangian points would be a superb precursor to flying to, and remaining at, the much farther distant Earth-Sun Lagrangian points.

"Flying to farther away destinations from lunar orbit or lunar Lagrangian points could have substantial advantages in flight time and/or propellant requirements as compared with departures from Earth orbit.

"Flying in the lunar vicinity would typically provide lower radiation exposures than those expected in interplanetary flight. The long communication delays to destinations beyond the moon mandate new techniques and procedures for spacecraft operations.? Mission Control cannot provide a Mars crew their normal helpful advice if the landing trajectory is nine minutes long but the time delay of the radar, communication and telemetry back to Earth is 19 minutes.

"Flight experience at lunar distance can provide valuable insights into practical solutions for handling such challenges.? I am persuaded that a return to the moon would be the most productive path to expanding the human presence in the solar system."

Sedentary Toddler Study | Toddler Times

463016 10100328746306811 25000422 43136883 980416286 o 300x200 Is Your Toddler Sitting Too Much?

That's not a couch he's jumping on.

Apparently couch-potato habits start early and toddlers these days are sitting way too much.

Probably not a shocker to anybody, right?? We?re an overweight and sedentary society.? But the big news is that kids are becoming more sedentary, modeling after their parents behavior.? In a study at Oregon State University, ?researchers looked at 200 families with children ages two to four to determine? how parenting styles affect children?s physical activity levels. All the children spent four to five hours sitting during a typical day, but children of? parents who weren?t home often and spent less time with their children spent up to 30 additional minutes a day watching television or sitting in front of a? computer screen.?? (c/o NY Daily News)?

But that points to my family?? we only spend roughly 3 hours awake at home on the weekdays, but we are plenty active.? When we are home, we?re usually in the backyard.? Or the boys are wrestling with the dog. Hell, I?ve even been known to chase Harrison in laps around our downstairs to burn off his energy.? According to the study and its leader, David Schary, parents don?t make it up with super-active weekends either.? Which is strange to me because as a kid, we played soccer and had swim meets and rec basketball games on the weekends.? My husband spends time out on the golf course.? (And we?ve already signed up Harrison for soccer in the fall, so this tradition carries.)? So I have to say that I?m sure his study points to a majority, but it does not apply to our family.

All in all, the approach to reporting the study leaves a bad taste in my mouth ? it seems to point fingers towards lazy parents.

But I do have a few theories as to why this does apply to many families, and it?s not for negative reasons or laziness as the study might suggest:

First, this study includes sedentary activities like coloring, reading, building blocks, tea parties,?etc.? While yes, the child is sedentary, he?s not simply zoned out in front of a television.? He?s working his brain and his speech skills and fine motor skills and imagination.? I see that as just as important as kicking a soccer ball or working major muscles.

see also: you will probably never hear me say, ?No, Harry. Stop reading that book right now and go play soccer.?

Secondly, parents are less likely these days to toss their kids outside for free play.? I have been known to send Harrison out into our (fenced) backyard with me watching from the living room or kitchen, but we also live on a safe street in a safe neighborhood where we know our neighbors.? Not everyone has that luxury, especially in a city.? As a kid, I was tossed outside to play for hours on weekends?but my mother didn?t have the same safety concerns in 1988 that we do today.

So I have to say that from where I stand, I give a big thumbs down to this study.

Yes, kids are more sedentary.? But I don?t think the study is painting the entire picture of parenting today.? We?re not lazy, we?re just different.

Gaming Nexus - Reminder folks, change your Xbox passwords! - by ...

Just a friendly reminder to all Xbox gamers, it would be a really good idea to change your passwords as Microsoft has been working hard to make sure a fiasco like the PSN outage last year doesn't happen To their system. Alex Garden of Xbox Live details how the company has been taking steps to protect customer security such as
  • quickly locking down accounts that may be compromised?
  • taking legal action to pull down any gamertags, usernames or passwords that may have been compromised by malware or phishing schemes
  • The Spring update which included many security improvements
  • Sending unique codes to security phone numbers and email addresses?
  • Working hard to reduce market incentives for criminal activity?
  • Encouraging customers to have valid, up to date security info

Please be sure to read this letter sent out by Alex Garden, General Manager at Xbox LIVE for full details.?

A guest post by Xbox LIVE General Manager Alex Garden on security improvements at Xbox, and how you can help protect your account.

Earlier this year, I wrote to you about our ongoing efforts to help protect the account security of our nearly 40 million Xbox LIVE members. I received hundreds of emails and the responses ranged from frustration to support, as well as suggestions for making Xbox LIVE the best service it can be. The feedback was great and I?d like to thank everyone who took the time to reach out. This experience has reinforced our belief that Xbox LIVE is not simply an online service but a community built upon the trust and investment of its members.

That?s why I?m pleased to report we?ve worked hard these last several months to further protect our members? accounts, and more is still to come.? Here are some things we?ve done since I last wrote:

We?ve increased notifications to members whose accounts may be compromised to add proofs, update their passwords, and, if necessary, contact Xbox support. This helps our team lock down an account quickly, investigate and restore the account to the rightful owner.

We?ve taken legal action to pull down online posts of gamertags, usernames and passwords gathered from malware or phishing schemes to help protect our members.

Our Xbox LIVE Spring update included many behind the scenes improvements that help us build on security enhancements for the near future.

We?re sending unique codes to the security phone numbers and secondary email addresses provided by members to verify authorization for Xbox.com purchases or account change attempts not stemming from a member?s trusted device.

We?re working to reduce market incentives for criminal activity. Engaging in identity theft, trading in stolen accounts and committing credit card fraud are illegal and violate our Terms of Use. Those involved in these activities risk criminal prosecution, account and console bans. That goes for both sellers and buyers of known stolen accounts and content.

Most importantly, many of our security enhancements and recovery processes are dependent on our members having valid, up-to-date security information in place. I encourage everyone to take five minutes today to check your security information and update it if necessary. If you have any lost or stolen security proofs, update them now to prevent any interruptions to your Xbox LIVE service in the future. We only use this information for your security, and never for marketing or advertising.

It?s a good idea to change your password if you haven?t done so recently, and make sure to use a different username and password for Microsoft versus other online services you access. This way if one company does experience a security breach, your leaked credentials won?t be used against you on other sites. Finally, help the people in your life who may be less security savvy by sharing suggestions like not using common words for passwords. Sadly, ?password? and ?12345? are still top of the most common password lists when we see breaches occur and passwords posted online.

The Internet has transformed the way we purchase goods and services and added layers of convenience to our lives. Yet, disappointingly, online fraud increasingly victimizes millions of unsuspecting consumers each year. The organized groups of criminals involved do not care about the time or expense experienced by individuals they?ve attacked; or the billions in currency global companies and financial institutions absorb each year from their illegal activities. In the end, all of us pay a high price for online fraud.

That is why our resolve at Microsoft to battle fraud and our commitment to account security is stronger than ever. I hope you?ll take a few moments to protect your account today and as always, I welcome you to share your views or concerns with me as we move forward together.

Sony Vaio T13 review - Bonnie Cha - Product Reviews - AllThingsD

If you?re shopping for a new laptop, you might find the term ?Ultrabook? popping up a lot during your research. An Ultrabook is thinner and lighter than a regular laptop, but it doesn?t sacrifice such features as a full keyboard, and it uses a different kind of memory instead of traditional hard drives to offer speed and good battery life, so you can use it as your main computer for everyday tasks like browsing the Web and working on documents. After a trend started by Apple?s MacBook Air, Windows PC makers such as HP, Dell and Samsung offer them, and now Sony has joined the fray.

Over the past week, I?ve been testing the Sony Vaio T13, the company?s first Ultrabook, and what makes it stand out from the pack is its affordable price tag. The cost of Ultrabooks still hovers in the $1,000 range but the Vaio T series starts at $770. By comparison, the similarly featured Dell XPS 13 costs $999 and up, while the 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,199.

For the price, the Vaio T13 offers Intel?s latest Ivy Bridge processors, a plethora of ports and four gigabytes of memory. To keep costs down, there are some tradeoffs, such as a lower resolution screen, but overall, I found the Vaio T13 to be a speedy machine. It?s a good value to be sure, but there are some downsides, such as a subpar keyboard and loud fan, that holds it back from excellent.

The Vaio T13 measures 12.7 inches wide, 0.71 inch thick and weighs 3.54 pounds, so it?s heavier than a number of ultrabooks on the market. For example, the Dell XPS 13 is 2.99 pounds and the MacBook Air weighs 2.96 pounds. That said, I didn?t find the extra weight to be a huge problem. I was able to carry it around in my backpack without it weighing me down.

Also, while it?s thicker than the Air, I appreciated the selection of ports available on the Vaio. This includes an Ethernet jack, two USB ports, HDMI and VGA ports if you want to connect to a TV or monitor and a Memory Stick Pro Duo/SD card slot.

The Vaio T has a 13.3-inch display with a 1,366 by 768 pixel resolution. Colors looked a bit dull, and pictures and videos weren?t overly bright or sharp. The lower resolution also means you have to scroll a bit more to see what?s onscreen, but you do get a decent-size touchpad that supports multitouch gestures to help you navigate various pages and switch between tasks. It worked well in my tests as I was able to return to the desktop by swiping down on the touchpad with four fingers and move between Web pages and photos by swiping left or right with three fingers.

But I didn?t like the Ultrabook?s keyboard. There?s plenty of spacing between the keys, so it doesn?t feel cramped. But the buttons are stiff and squishy, so I really had to punch at the keys. It?s something I got used to after a while, but it led to a lot of mistakes and frustration at the beginning. I also wish the keyboard was backlit for easier typing in darker rooms.

The $799 Vaio T13 I reviewed is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and features a combined 500GB hard drive and 32GB solid-state drive. (You can configure the ultrabook with a faster i7 processor and up to 8GB of memory.) A number of Ultrabooks feature only solid-state drives ? or flash memory ? that improve speed and battery life but limit storage capacity. They are also more expensive, which is why Sony used this hybrid option.

Even so, I found the Vaio T13 to be a responsive computer and you get the bonus of extra storage capacity. It took the Ultrabook 29 seconds to boot up from a cold start and seven seconds to wake up from sleep mode. The MacBook Air started up in 15 seconds and awoke in five seconds, so there isn?t that much of a difference in the latter test.

At one time, I had at least a dozen tabs open in my Web browser, streamed a YouTube video and downloaded an album from the Google Play Web store while working on a Word document. The Vaio T13 was able to handle all those tasks without slowing down. However, its fan does tend to make a lot of noise. It?s annoying, but I suppose it is doing its job, as the Ultrabook never got warm, even when I was viewing entire TV shows on Hulu.

Sony estimates the Vaio T13?s battery life to be around seven hours and 30 minutes with power-saving mode on. In my tests, where I turned off all power-saving features and left Wi-Fi on, set the display to full brightness and looped a music playlist while running an email application in the background, the Vaio delivered four hours and 20 minutes of battery life.

The battery performance is middle-of-the-road compared to some of the other Ultrabooks we?ve tested at AllThingsD, with the Dell XPS 13 being the worst at under four hours and the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s being the best at five hours. With more normal usage, I expect you should get about an additional hour of battery life from the Vaio T13.

The Vaio runs Windows 7 and comes preloaded with a starter edition of Microsoft Office 2010, which offers basic versions of Word and Excel, and a 30-day trial of Kaspersky Internet Security. There are also various Sony apps, such as the company?s Music Unlimited store and PlayMemories multimedia gallery ? all of which you can access from a pull-down menu at the top of the desktop screen.

For those on a budget, the Sony Vaio T13 is certainly worth a consideration. It?s fast and offers a good amount storage. But if possible, I?d definitely recommend going into a store and trying out the keyboard to see if it?s to your liking.

iPad prototype renderings from early-2000s revealed in Apple / Samsung court filings (updated)

Image

It's a strange bit of history that the concept of an Apple tablet led to what we know as the first iPhone. It's a fact that Steve Jobs made mention of back in 2010, at an appearance at All Things D, realizing that Apple was capable of building a handset based on the technology it pieced together for a multitouch display. Now, thanks to Apple / Samsung court filings (you know that whole little kerfuffle between the companies) and digging by the folks at NetworkWorld, some early concepts for an Apple slate have come to light. The dates of the mockups are a little nebulous at the moment, but during his deposition, Jonathan Ive, puts them at somewhere between 2002 and 2004. Check a few more angles and a stiff case usage in the gallery below.
