Real Estate Investing LIES Unveiled | Real Estate, Home & Garden ...

Let?s get REAL about something ? and quelch the LIES you have been told about Real Estate Investing!?

What I am going to reveal to you are some basic
truths about Real Estate investing ? truths that may
totally affect the Real Estate investments you have
now ? and certainly I intend to modify the way you
do Real Estate investing in the future.

Let?s get right to it ? and into the heart of the real
estate investing issue.

You have been programmed all your life to become
what you are today ? from school, friends, relatives
and, yes, your parents.

Recent studies show that you are who you are now,
more from what you learned prior to age 8 than in
anything else you have learned since.

Now, that may surprise you, but it is true that what
you learned at the earliest ages affects the way you
make Real Estate investments today, and the type
of Real Estate investing success you will have going
forward!

Yes, that?s a bit shocking.

You see, if you grew up in an environment where
you heard things like

?We can?t afford it?, ?Be sure
you have saved enough and have the cash to buy it?
(i.e., never use credit), or numerous other phrases
that you now hear yourself saying (you know what
I?m talking about ? those times you catch yourself
?becoming your parents?), it is because of your
early programming (from 0-8 years) and what you
were told about money, success, and life in general.

That is controlling your current income ? and your
success ? or lack of it?

The things you were told at that early, most
influential age, are now creeping out and affecting
how successful you are in business, in life and yes,
in your Real Estate investing.

THERE IS GOOD NEWS

The greatest thing about this fact ? as horrible as it
seems ? is that you can change the ?programming? ?
you have the power to do it!

You can reprogram yourself in any way you want ?
have anything you want ? do anything you want.

All it takes is simply to ?reinstall? the right kind of
thinking.

And, it is easier than you might think!

One of the best ways to do that is to get a CD audio
set from someone you like to listen to ? someone
that thinks positively and speaks of the life you want
to live. Many home study courses are available (yes,
including mine) that are designed to inspire and
motivate you, while they teach you the methods and
secrets of real estate investing.

Purchase one ? listen to it, over and over ? until you
hear yourself speaking that way, too.

You see, we are all simply creatures of habit and
environment ? if we allow junk to get into our heads,
all we will ever say is junk coming out.

If all you listen to is the bad stuff in life (like the TV
news, most ?talk radio? shows, those TV ?real life?
shows that end up in fights ? you know the ones.,
and even violent movies where the language is
nothing you?d ever expect to hear from your own
lips.), that is exactly what you will wind up sounding
like!

It is true ? ?you are what you eat? ? and that counts
just as much for what you put in your ears as it does
for what you put in your mouth!

If you spend your time around ?bar people?, you?ll
speak and act like them. Not that there?s anything
wrong with that, as long as you made a conscious
thought that it is what you want, but I think you?d
be much more successful at Real Estate investing if
you were listening to a successful person teaching
you about Real Estate Investing!

Now, let?s get right to the point about the various
methods and concepts you have learned about Real
Estate Investing.

You may call yourself a ?real estate investing expert?,
but if you have to get up every morning and wonder
where your next check is coming from, you aren?t
making real estate investments, you are being
employed in a Real Estate Investing JOB!

Yes, that?s a hard-hitting statement.

You see, I want you to ?get real? with yourself and
simply admit it ? Real Estate investing is when you
put money into a Real Estate investment and then
get some money out ? ?real estate investing?
defined.

Yet, it seems that most people I meet want to
attend my real estate training or purchase my real
estate courses that have to do with ?No Money
Down? (NMD) real estate investing.

Now, that kind of talk just proves the point ? you can
reprogram yourself to speak a different language ?
even if it doesn?t make sense!

A bunch of ?gurus? have told you over and over again
that ?No Money Down? is real estate investing ? even
though you learned at an early age that ?invest?
means to put money into something and get money
out (see http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=invest for other definitions ? none of them say ?No
Money Down??)

Now, it?s not that ?NMD Real Estate investing? is all
bad ? heck, my students and I make several
thousand dollars from these types of ?Real Estate
investing? transactions every year, too.

Just don?t lie to yourself and say they are ?real
estate investments?, we know very clearly that these
are simply ?earned income? from one portion of your
real estate investing business ? the real estate ?job?
portion ? earned while in transition from your
?corporate job? to your ?real estate investing job? and
on the road to true Real Estate Investing.

In other real estate investing articles, I cover some
of the methods and techniques you, too, can explore
while moving from your ?corporate job? to your ?real
estate investing job? and you?ll learn some insider
secrets for taking that leap quickly.

Television: Chronicle of a death foretold? Study of Canadian families and television in the digital age

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? Not only is TV not endangered, but it also has a unifying social impact on the nuclear family across the country. This is the main conclusion of a cross-Canada study -- Are the Kids All Right? -- on the television viewing habits of families with at least one child aged between 9 and 12 years. The study was conducted by a team of researchers led by Andr? H. Caron, professor of communications at the Universit? de Montr?al and Director of the Centre for Youth and Media Studies (CYMS).

"Young Canadians today live in a different world than that experienced by previous generations. In this context, many well-placed observers have predicted the impending death of television," says Dr. Caron. "We wanted to test the veracity of this statement, so we set out to meet 80 different families (over 200 participants) to determine the current place of the small screen that has shaped so many childhoods since its creation."

Presentation of the study

The study was conducted over three years in two phases. In the first phase, more than 500 Canadian children's television programs were analyzed. The results, published in 2010, showed the decisive quality of Canadian productions. On the other hand, it also revealed significant gaps in the availability and diversity of programs geared specifically to children aged between 9 and 12 years.

The second phase of the study consisted of a thorough examination of the appropriation of media by families and children: in addition to the role, perception, and influence of TV, the study examined how children make use of new screen-based media such as computers, video game consoles, and smartphones. Based on this approach, the researchers interviewed Canadian families in their everyday environment (their homes) in five Canadian cities: St. John's, Montr?al, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver. The researchers also used the method of focus groups, composed respectively of children, fathers, mothers, and young adolescents in each city.

Results: highlights

"In the evening, when we're all sitting together, it's family TV time"

The results of the study show that, as in the past, television remains the media platform best suited to shared family experiences in the five regions visited. Families continue to attribute value and importance to TV. The results also suggest that second screens (tablets, smartphones, etc.) are still not widely used by this group and are not a threat to television: when present, they complement it. Thus, children and parents interviewed across the country consider television as far from being endangered since, because of its dimensions, it is the only screen in the house that allows family members to gather together and watch their favourite shows.

The study also highlighted regional differences in content and practices surrounding television use. For example, the greatest number of hours spent watching TV was in St. John's, Newfoundland, while that city also had the best balance of time spent on outdoor activities. In Calgary, parents' approaches were by far the most traditional, with greater involvement in decisions regarding program choice and number of viewing hours. In Quebec, there was a desire of parents for more programming for 9-12 year olds, preferably from Quebec.

Canadian content: are children loyal?

The findings also show that parents question the lack of content offered to their children. "Indeed, from pre-school to around 7-8 years, children are relatively loyal to Canadian programming since producers here offer a variety of programs known for their quality. After that, there is a sort of vacuum, and Canadian content for this group becomes more and more rare," laments Caron. Thus, their loyalty to Canadian television fades with time. "However, the 9-12 year old period is a good time to revive children's interest in Canadian television programming because they still want to spend time with their families and cherish these moments of closeness watching TV together. For Canadian producers, it's about long-term loyalty to TV 'made in Canada,'" concludes the researcher.

Jill Kelley: Woman near the heart of a scandal

The woman who triggered the investigation that led to the resignation of CIA chief David Petraeus threw lavish parties for top military brass ? and also racked up debt. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

By NBC News staff

Florida socialite Jill Kelley has emerged as a central figure in the growing scandal that?s ensnared high-ranking officials at the CIA and the Pentagon.

In the latest twist, U.S. General John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, is under investigation for exchanging what officials describe as ?inappropriate? emails with Kelley, a Tampa, Fla., wife and a mother of three daughters.

That revelation came days after the resignation of Gen. David Petraeus -- a family friend of Kelley?s -- from his post as director of the CIA over an admitted affair.

"This is something that's going to brand her for life," David Khawam, Kelley's brother, told TODAY. "My sister, number one, is a mother. OK, she has three kids. She's extremely dedicated to those kids. Number two, she's a wife. She's extremely dedicated to her husband. And he to her.?

Officials say Kelley?s complaint to the FBI over anonymous, threatening emails touched off the investigation that led to Petraeus? resignation after officials uncovered an apparent affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

ISAF commander Gen. John Allen under investigation over 'inappropriate' emails

Now, even the FBI agent who first heard Kelley?s complaint is under scrutiny, officials said.

Kelley and her husband, who is a surgeon, are close friends of the Petraeus family. Kelley, 37, was a volunteer social liaison to the MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, where she often hosted parties for top brass. Kelley also has a twin sister, Natalie, who is a lawyer based in Florida.

According to a senior official, the investigation that led to Petraeus' resignation began several months ago when Kelley reported she had received anonymous harassing emails from a person she didn't know.

The FBI viewed the matter as a potential case of "cyber-harassment" and it was handled "regionally" with federal prosecutors working with the FBI on the matter, the official said. At first, neither Kelley nor the FBI knew who was sending the harassing emails because they came from accounts that were not immediately identifiable.

Petraeus revelation began as cyber-harassment probe; investigation ended 4 days before election

But the FBI was eventually able to determine they came from Broadwell. Investigators then obtained access to Broadwell?s regular email account, where they uncovered her email exchanges with Petraeus and an apparent relationship between the two of them, the official said.

The FBI agent whom Kelley asked to look into the emails she received?was a friend and had no further part in the investigation, a senior law enforcement official said Tuesday.

The agent sent Kelley a photo of himself with no shirt, "as a joke, a gag" at least six months before she began receiving the troubling emails, the official said. There is, the official said, no indication that the relationship between the two was anything more than a friendship. Agents discovered the shirtless photo in her e-mails, resulting in an internal investigation into whether he acted inappropriately.

The FBI has declined to identify the agent.

A statement released late on Sunday on behalf of Kelley and her husband, Scott, read: "We and our family have been friends with General Petraeus and his family for over 5 years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children."

Frequently fundraising for the Wounded Warriors Project, the Kelleys socialized with Petreaus and his wife, Holly. In 2010, the Petraeuses watched the Gasparilla parade from a tent on the Kelleys front lawn.

Kelley's brother said he stands by her sister and offers his full support.

"The conversations I had with her were basically, that I love you and and we're here for whatever you need," Khawam told TODAY.

In a 1988 Philadelphia Inquirer feature, the Khawams are described as a Lebanese family that emigrated to Philadelphia in the 1970s. Among other activities, they ran a Middle Eastern restaurant called Sahara.

Regina's Dustin Molleken enjoys historic first baseball season in Japan

The newness was overwhelming at first.

Dustin Molleken sat in his three-bedroom condo in downtown Sapporo, Hokkaido, just a couple of days after he arrived in Japan to play baseball for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, and doubted his decision to move there. Nothing was familiar to him - the language, the people, everything. As he soon found out, even the game he has played for years was slightly different than what he was used to in America. His allergy to shellfish didn't help matters, either.

"After the first couple of days there, I wasn't sure if that was going to be the right place for me," he explained. "It took me a while to get used to everything over there. Once I got settled in, it was a great time for me. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I loved it."

And that's not because he perfected the art of eating with chopsticks. Molleken enjoyed a solid season with the Fighters, became somewhat of a local celebrity and carved his name into the Canadian and Japanese baseball history books during his four months with the team.

The 28-year-old Molleken became the first Canadian to appear in a Japan Series championship game - the Japanese version of the World Series. Molleken's Fighters lost the series to the Yomiuri Giants, but the experience of competing at the professional level was unforgettable.

"There was about 50,000 fans in the Tokyo Dome (home of the Giants) and they're all singing and chanting, stomping their feet for the entire game," Molleken said. "I was sitting in the bullpen, which is underneath the stands, and I could feel the building shake and vibrate. The atmosphere in there was like nothing I had ever seen."

And then Molleken, a relief pitcher, got the call from his manager in the dugout that he would replace the Fighters' starter in Game 1 of the series. And when Molleken trotted to the mound in the fifth inning, that's when history was made.

"I had no idea I was the first Canadian to do that," he said. "I didn't know until the next day when someone told me. It's such a special honour. It was a proud moment."

Molleken also pitched in Game 5 of the series.

Overall, Molleken appeared in 23 games for the Fighters. He posted a 2-1 record with a 3.27 earned-run average. He struck out 18 batters in 22 innings.

The Japanese style was also educational for Mollek-en, who had spent the past seven seasons in the minor leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates' and Colorado Rockies' affiliates. Pitching in Japan, Molleken felt, made him a smarter pitcher.

"It wasn't just about getting the ball, checking the runner at first and then making your pitch," he said. "They like to run all the time, so you really have to slow the game down when you're on the mound. You check the runner, then you check him again and again before you pitch.

"And they like to hit everything to the opposite field, so pitching on the outside corner doesn't work the way it did over here."

Molleken's transition was made easier thanks to the full-time translator that was assigned to him every day. Standing 6-foot-4 and at 230 pounds, Molleken was easy to spot in a crowd in Japan. That made him a sure target to baseball fans.

"The people were so nice and friendly all the time," he said. "They would see me after a game or on the street and they'd come up and smile ... they always want to touch you by grabbing your hand or your arm, patting you on the back. They were such great people to be around."

Molleken's contract with the Fighters expires at the end of the November. He said three Japanese teams have already expressed an interest in signing him for the 2013 season, so he expects to return there in February for spring training.

Oklahoma Insurance Department Warns Against Medicare Scam ...

OKLAHOMA CITY -

Officials have a warning about a new phone scam being reported all over the state. The Oklahoma Insurance Department says it's getting complaints about people claiming to be from Medicare to get money and personal information.

It's a big problem especially right now because it's time for Medicare enrollment, and more than 600,000 Oklahomans qualify.

The people behind the calls are telling seniors they need new Medicare ID cards, but the Oklahoma Insurance Department says it's all a scam.

The Oklahoma Insurance Department gets a lot of calls this time of year to its Medicare Assistance Program..

"Unfortunately, we're also getting calls from beneficiaries who are hearing from unscrupulous individuals who are wanting to convince them that Medicare is sending out new Medicare ID cards," Medicare Assistance Director Ray Walker said.

Walker says thieves are calling seniors and asking for their Medicare number or bank account information to get a new, plastic Medicare ID card.

"Unfortunately, we have Medicare beneficiaries who are doing that, and it's a scam," Walker said.

Walker says a Medicare card is just as good to a thief as your credit card.

"They can take that and generate medical claims to Medicare to be processed, and before you know it, thousands and thousands of dollars in medical claims have been sent to Medicare to processed," Walker said.

The Insurance Department want to remind seniors that Medicare won't call and ask for your personal information.

Also, be aware that information you do provide over the phone could be brokered to telemarketers through third parties, and never pay for services in advance.

The Insurance Department relies on beneficiaries to fight Medicare fraud.

If you get one of these calls, try to get as much information from the so-called company calling you, so you can report it.

Medicare fraud is a $60 billion a year industry.

To report a scam to the insurance department, call 1-800-763-2828.

Is Hamas responsible for Gaza rocket fire? Not exactly.

And there could well be more of it without them.

By Dan Murphy,?Staff writer / November 14, 2012

Smoke rises after an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

Edi Israel/AP

Israel's air offensive on the Gaza Strip today is a response to rocket fire from the coastal Palestinian enclave. Hamas, which governs the strip, has borne the brunt of the assault. The action began with a missile that targeted Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari as he drove through Gaza City today (the IDF quickly shared a video of that attack) and was followed by dozens more.?

Here's how Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren explained the Gaza strikes this afternoon: "The scope of the IDF's defensive operation depends on Hamas and whether it takes the decision to cease firing missiles on our homes."

But Hamas has not been the principal one firing the rockets at Israel, at least not lately. Other, smaller militant groups in Gaza like Islamic Jihad and the popular resistance committees in the strip do much of the shooting, though the Al Qassam Brigade that Mr. Jabari headed until his death has taken credit for some attacks in recent weeks.

This may be a distinction without a difference to Israeli officials. They frequently argue that Hamas is the governing authority in Gaza, and therefore is de facto responsible for all rocket fire.

But Hamas has in fact been trying to keep rocket fire under control in the years since Israel's Operation Cast Lead in the territory in late 2008/early 2009. One of their most important men in keeping militancy under wraps? Mr. Jabari, who was powerful enough and respected enough to prevent a major outbreak of violence from Gaza that could have invited powerful reprisals.

Here's how veteran Israeli columnist Aluf Benn put it today:

Ahmed Jabari was a subcontractor, in charge of maintaining Israel's security in Gaza. This title will no doubt sound absurd to anyone who in the past several hours has heard Jabari described as "an arch-terrorist," "the terror chief of staff" or "our Bin Laden." But that was the reality for the past five and a half years. Israel demanded of Hamas that it observe the truce in the south and enforce it on the multiplicity of armed organizations in the Gaza Strip. The man responsible for carrying out this policy was Ahmed Jabari.

Now Israel is saying that its subcontractor did not do his part and did not maintain the promised quiet on the southern border. The repeated complaint against him was that Hamas did not succeed in controlling the other organizations, even though it is not interested in escalation. After Jabari was warned openly (Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff reported here at the beginning of this week that the assassination of top Hamas people would be renewed), he was executed on Wednesday in a public assassination action, for which Israel hastened to take responsibility. The message was simple and clear: You failed - you're dead.

Hamas control of the strip was never ironclad, and it could well get worse from here on out. Under the best of conditions, Hamas has had a politically understandable reluctance to target Palestinian militants who seek to strike out at Israel. A majority of the strip's population are descendants of refugees who were forced out of their homes in 1948, and the rocket-fire now falls in the areas where their ancestors formerly lived.

Hamas's rise to power there was thanks in equal measure to the widespread corruption of Fatah and to Hamas's image as a more serious and committed resister of Israel than its secular rival. So there are political costs to shutting down the militant groups that fire rockets at Israel, not to mention that such efforts could escalate into a civil war. Though Israel publicly seems to assert that Hamas can simply turn of the rocket attacks if it chooses too, the reality in Gaza is a bit more complex.

Now, Hamas will be mulling whether it should retaliate with some of the longer-range rockets from their arsenal. The argument against that would be Israel's overwhelming military advantage, which would be brought down hard on Hamas leaders, the rank and file, and average Gaza residents alike. The Hamas deal with Israel in recent years ? restraining rocket attacks ? has been to its own advantage. While taking a tough stance against Israel is generally popular, provoking the powerful neighbor with tactically useless rocket-fire, is not, particularly since Israel's response cause so much misery among Gaza's population.

That logic still holds, as furious as the group must be about the attacks today. So far, the message from Hamas has been fairly restrained.

Spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement: "I warn those who violate all laws and accords of grave consequences if they persist in this unprovoked aggression. The resistance has the full right to respond, to provide security and protection for the Palestinian people in the face of these repeated murderous raids." Declaring a right to respond is something different than promising a response.

It's a Wonderful Lifetime Movie Review ? The Christmas Consultant ...

On Saturday, November 10th 2012, Lifetime television network premiered its first Christmas movie of the season as a part of the ?It?s a Wonderful Lifetime? marathon of holiday movies.

?

I must say I was highly entertained by ?The Christmas Consultant,? which starred David Hasselhoff and Caroline Rhea. I don?t know what this says about David Hasselhoff?s acting career, but this was my favorite character he has ever portrayed to date, next to Michael Knight (Knight Rider) and Mitch Buchannon (Baywatch), yes, I liked Batwatch for most of its seasons. It even felt like he was channeling Jim Varney?s Ernest in ?Ernest Saves Christmas,? with his enthusiastic tune of voice when rounding up the troops for Christmas festivities.

?

David Hasseloff plays a Christmas Consultant name Owen, hired by Caroline Rhea?s character and her husband to help with the organization of Christmas (shopping, decorating, baking, party planning, etc), after she is pushed into planning a huge Christmas Eve party by her boss to impress a potential new client.

?

Juggling working on a marketing proposal for her potential client and partaking in Christmas festivities planned by Owen; Maya (Rhea) becomes very stressed out by the holidays and finds that she is unable to enjoy spending time with her family.

?

This becomes even more difficult, when she sees Owen capturing the hearts of her children and being there for them in the way she would like to be.

?

I really liked that David?s character is not too cheesy, somehow the script and David?s acting manages to find a balance between cheesy and lovable. Even though it was blatantly obvious that Owen loves Christmas and that he is very good at his job, he does not carry it to the extreme point of total annoyance. You actually really get to love this character and kind of wish you had an Owen in your life not only to help you organize Christmas but to organize your life altogether.

?

At the Christmas party, which was going really well, Maya loses it and takes out her frustration on everyone but especially Owen, ending the scene with her standing over Owen, yelling to the top of her lungs ?Your Fired!? and Owen heading through the door with a hurt look on his face. Then she is fired by her boss. Maya does not return to her senses or see what she has done until after it is all said and done. She feels remorse.

?

On Christmas day, Maya?s family offers her forgiveness and she sets out to make things right with Owen. Then she learns that Owen lost his wife and that he was alone and she invites him to be a part of their family.

?

All is well, that ends well. Maya gets her job back and everyone frolic to a Christmas song by the Christmas tree. It was very nice movie. I like. What about you?

?

P.S- I know everyone has their own opinion on this movie and on the flood of holiday movies, new and old, coming our way this Christmas, but for me, I love Christmas movies and I take them for what they are. Some are cheesy, some are romantic, some are funny, some are absolutely ridiculous and should never be watched more than once, but I love holiday movies, they make me feel good and there is nothing wrong with that.

dailywireless.org ? Weightless M2M Standard, Version 0.9

Weightless, the global organization delivering the royalty-free open standard to enable the Internet of Things, today announced the release of version 0.9 of its M2M Specification. Weightless, which is using unused television channels (?white spaces?), enables machine-to-machine communications using a chipset said to cost of less than USD$2. It has a range of up to 10km with a battery life up to 10 years.

Weightless is a wireless wide area standard for machine to machine communications. The Weightless spec uses white spaces for low-cost communications over wide areas.

With the release of version 0.9 the Weightless Specification moves within a single step of a final, stable v1.0 release due towards the end of Q1 2013. Version 0.9 is now complete with significant additions made to the MAC, Security and Applications sections.

The specification is now over 300 pages long and provides all the detail needed for developers to fully understand and model it.

The announcement follows the recent announcement of growing support and momentum for the standard with the appointment of ARM, Cable and Wireless Worldwide, CSR and Neul to the Board and Promoter Group.

Weightless technology has been optimized for the unique requirements of machine to machine communications and is provided as a royalty-free open standard. It is not designed for general broadband internet access, but for applications like meter reading. Weightless promises to bring a common set of standards for M2M communications not possible with traditional legacy cellular based technologies.

Weightless uses a base station to transmit to a few thousand devices. The devices are allocated a specific time and frequency to transmit their data back to the base station. It uses Time-division duplex operation with frequency hopping and variable spreading factors to increase range and accommodate low power devices. Devices must be qualified by the Weightless Special Interest Group. Patents would only be licensed to those qualifying devices; thus the protocol, whilst open, may be regarded as proprietary, notes Wikipedia.

Other technologies using white spaces are also being developed. One is Wi-Fi under the developing standard IEEE 802.11af. It can gang multiple 6 MHz TV channels together for increased bandwidth.

The IEEE 802.22 standard also defines general protocol model for negotiating and selecting shared spectrum band for device operation. Weightless Radio complies with this standard to cooperatively share the available TV WhiteSpace spectrum. The 802.22 standard is not designed for mobile usage, but operates in a point to multipoint basis.

Scientists go the whole hog in genome mapping

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have mapped the genome of the domestic pig in a project that could enhance the animal's use for meat production and the testing of drugs for human disease.

A study published in science journal Nature identified genes that could be linked with illnesses suffered by farmed pigs, providing a reference tool for selective breeding to increase their resistance to disease.

"This new analysis helps us understand the genetic mechanisms that enable high-quality pork production, feed efficiency and resistance to disease," said Sonny Ramaswany, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

"This knowledge can ultimately help producers breed high-quality swine, lower production costs and improve sustainability."

Alan Archibald at the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute in Scotland, who worked on the project with collaborators in the Netherlands and the United States, said the new genome sequence was the first good draft.

Archibald said while making sense of the analysis would take time, the benefits of genome sequencing flow through more quickly in agriculture than, for instance, human medicine, "because we can use selective breeding".

Identifying genes responsible for diseases that are also seen in people could see pigs used more extensively for drug testing.

For instance, the inherited illness known as porcine stress syndrome, which can cause sudden death in pigs, has similarities to the human condition malignant hyperthermia which causes a fast and dangerous rise in body temperature in some people under general anesthetic.

Some of the genetic faults that pigs share with humans can be linked with conditions as varied as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, dyslexia, obesity and Parkinson's disease, the researchers said.

"In total, we found 112 positions where the porcine protein has the same amino acid that is implicated in a disease in humans," they said.
