Aperture 3.3

Aperture has largely sat still over the past two years, occasionally tightening up the code and adjusting to new Mac OS capabilities, while Adobe's competing Lightroom pro photo workflow app has majorly improved. The latest point upgrade of Aperture, 3.3, does bring a few new interface tweaks, photo fixing tools, and native support for iPhoto libraries, but it still hasn't caught up with Adobe Lightroom ($149, 4.5 stars) in powerful, profile-based image corrections. And Lightroom is just the most important competitor in a growing field of pro photo-workflow software?ACDSee Pro ($129.99, 4 stars), CyberLink's PhotoDirector ($99.99, 3.5 stars), and Corel AfterShot Pro ($59.99, 2.5 stars).

Aperture's smooth user interface, Faces and Places features, plentiful output options, and good camera raw support do stand out, however. For Mac users who want a big step up in power from iPhoto, Aperture is a natural, and it's the only pro photo workflow app updated to support MacBooks with Retina displays and iCloud Photo Streams. But Lightroom goes further for the pro or very serious amateur, not only with its enforced workflow, but in the image corrections it offers, both basic and advanced.

Signup and Setup
As will all Apple software, Aperture 3.3 is only available through the Mac App Store. If you bought Aperture 3 on disc, you can upgrade through Apple Update. That means there's no longer a free trial download version, but when you buy the $79.99 app from the App Store, you'll be able to install it on up to five computers. Moving your photo editing from iPhoto to Aperture is easier than ever: Now when you first run the latter, you'll see a splash screen that asks if you want to use your iPhoto library for Aperture, without requiring an import of all the photos. In fact, with this update, your iPhoto (v9.3 or later) and Aperture libraries become one and the same. This will be key for Mac users with large iPhoto libraries in place. When I installed the update, however, a note told me that I wouldn't be able to use my library with previous versions of Aperture?no problem, I'm not going back!

I tested Aperture 3.3 on a MacBook with Retina Display, a recent iMac, and a three-year old MacBook. Performance was obviously excellent on the Retina MacBook. On the white MacBook with 2.6GHz dual core, the library update took 5 minutes, and then my MobileMe albums had to be moved. But performance during general program use wasn't so bad on the older machine, either.

Interface
Aperture's interface differs in a basic way from that of Lightroom (and most other photo workflow apps) in that it's not "modal." In Lightroom, the app has major task-related interfaces for Library, Develop, and more, while Aperture always uses the same interface. Its Inspector panel has tabs for Library, Info, and Adjust. This means you can navigate among your photos while making adjustments, without having to switch modes as you do in Lightroom. Some will prefer Lightroom's separation of tasks and enforcement of a workflow, while others will prefer Aperture's flexibility.

Aperture's find and filter tools do let you limit the thumbnail view in the library browser to very specific criteria, such as ISO or camera make or lens used, but Lightroom's search filters are snappier to use?you don't have to create a rule set the way you do in Aperture to get to the files you want. Just limiting the view to only video files should be much easier, as it is in many other photo applications.

Though Lightroom hasn't been customized for Retina MacBooks as Aperture has, you can simply view at the former's 1:2 proportion to see 1:1. And after a bit, I found that the Retina update wasn't such a big advantage for Aperture?I could work just as effectively in Lightroom, as long as I knew that 1:2 was actually 100 percent view. And the Lightroom image looked sharper than the same raw image in Aperture at 200 percent.

Version 3.3 makes some subtle but desirable changes to Aperture's user interface. The icons atop are now all monochromatic gray, and the colorful sharing icons (Facebook, Flickr) are now collapsed into a Share dropdown. This removes distractions from your image. But I still wish you could change the app's frame color from the outdated-looking light gray borders. The answer to this is Aperture's full-screen view. In full screen, you can adjust the background shade of gray to black.

My final interface note is that Aperture makes excellent use of keyboard shortcuts?something those who process a lot of photos can appreciate. But, again, the competition also features strong support for shortcuts.

(AP) ? One of Britain's richest women, American-born Eva Rausing, was found dead in her west London home and a man was arrested in connection with the case, British police said Tuesday, adding that an autopsy had failed to uncover a formal cause of death.

Rausing, 48, was the wife of Hans Kristian Rausing, heir to the TetraPak fortune his father built by creating a successful manufacturer of laminated cardboard drink containers.

Both Rausing and her husband have had long-running and often public battles against addiction.

British police said they had arrested a 49-year-old man Monday on suspicion of drug possession and a subsequent search of an address in London's tony Belgravia neighborhood related to that arrest turned up Rausing's body later that day.

The man was widely named in the British media but police would not confirm his identity.

Scotland Yard said in a statement Tuesday that further tests were being carried out on Rausing's body after an autopsy was inconclusive. It said officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime division were investigating the case "and the death continues to be treated at this time as unexplained."

The man arrested in connection with Rausing's death remained under arrest but was receiving medical attention at a location away from the police station, police said. They would not say if the man was under guard.

After the news broke, her parents, Tom and Nancy Kemeny, and the rest of her family paid tribute Tuesday to a "devoted wife" and mother of four "much loved and wonderful children," saying they were devastated over her death. Their statement also alluded to her struggles.

"During her short lifetime she made a huge philanthropic impact, supporting a large number of charitable causes, not only financially, but using her own personal experiences," the family said in a statement. "She bravely fought her health issues for many years."

A statement from her in-laws, Hans and Marit Rausing, said they were "deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death."

Eva Rausing supported a number of charities that helped to fight addictions. One of them ? Action on Addiction ? was among the first to express sadness over her death and praise her "wonderfully generous" support over the years.

She also was listed as a long-term supporter of The Prince's Foundation, part of a group of nonprofit charities that have Prince Charles as their patron. His office said the prince was told of Rausing's death but did not offer further comment.

In a diplomatic scandal in 2008, Eva Rausing was arrested outside the U.S. Embassy in London for reportedly trying to bring crack cocaine and heroin into building in her handbag. Police later found small amounts of cocaine, crack and heroin in a search of couple's 5 million-pound (then $10 million) London town house. The couple was charged with drug possession but prosecutors later agreed to drop the charges in exchange for formal police warnings.

At the time, the Rausing family issued a statement saying relatives were "deeply saddened" by the couple's drug problems and hoped they could overcome their addictions.

Hans Rausing's Swedish father helped transform TetraPak into a hugely successful manufacturer. The fortune of the senior Rausing and his family is estimated at 4.3 billion pounds ($6.7 billion) by the Sunday Times Rich List.

Paper to be discussed at PEPfAR seminar July 10 in Washington, D.C.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPfAR) began in 2003 with good intentions, but it was not until the U.S. government's massive overseas public health campaign adopted generic drugs that it became a success, according to a new article by Brown University researchers in the July issue of the journal Health Affairs. Nearly a decade later, expanding the availability of generics remains urgent, especially as doctors in the field encounter resistance to first-line treatment regimens.

"By 2002 generic drugs had been shown to work, so there was not a question of whether they were efficacious," said Kartik Venkatesh, an M.D./Ph.D. graduate student and the paper's lead author. "So then it was a question of how do we expand access to treatment so that more than 5 to 10 percent of those in need of treatment were getting it. Now two out of three individuals who need treatment in the 15 PEPfAR countries are getting it."

That's because the program, which primarily bought proprietary medicines from major U.S. manufacturers in the early years, eventually made the transition to much cheaper generics, said Venkatesh who will speak about the paper as part of a Health Affairs briefing July 10 that features Nils Daulaire, director of global health affairs in the Department of Health and Human Services, and Eric Goosby, U.S. global AIDS coordinator.

Generics slashed the program's costs, allowing it to vastly expand care delivery. In their review article, Venkatesh and his co-authors cite data that PEPfAR has reduced its annual per person spending on antiretroviral medicines to $300 this year from $1,100 in 2005.

PEPfAR, launched by President George W. Bush and then reauthorized by President Obama, is a multibillion-dollar effort to deliver HIV treatment and other related health services to people in 15 developing nations, including 12 in sub-Saharan Africa.

Early on, the program did not have a mechanism in place to allow for the adoption of generics. Instead the program only purchased antiretrovirals that the FDA had approved for use in the United States. Whether that was because of concerns about drug quality or industry politics or a combination of both seemed a matter of debate.

"There was tremendous concern at the beginning that antiviral medications bought by PEPfAR would be limited to branded drugs, purchased from the U.S. pharmaceutical industry," said Dr. Charles Carpenter, professor of medicine in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a physician at The Miriam Hospital.

The FDA subsequently agreed to evaluate and to give tentative approval, when appropriate, to qualifying foreign-made generic antivirals so that they could be bought by PEPfAR and used exclusively overseas. The program also expanded drug availability by developing a sophisticated supply chain management system to anticipate demand. In addition, over time the FDA has lowered the costs it charges foreign drug companies to test their generics.

"We are now providing HIV medications for more than 3 million people, hopefully 4 million soon, and are buying them for the least cost possible," Carpenter said.

Carpenter and Dr. Kenneth Mayer, a professor at Harvard Medical School and adjunct professor of epidemiology at Brown, are co-authors on the paper.

PEPfAR is now facing the challenge that many people have HIV infections that are resistant to the first-line and second-line antiretroviral drugs available as generics. PEPfAR has not yet approved and gained access to many of the drugs that make up a second and third line of antiviral defense in a generic form.

"I don't know how long that's going to take, but I do know that Ambassador Goosby is working very hard to achieve that end," Carpenter said.

For other major global health efforts, Carpenter said, what PEPfAR's experience has to teach will vary based on the disease at hand.

But Venkatesh said studying PEPFAR's history with generics does have value for the future, even in new efforts that might target non-communicable diseases such as diabetes or obesity.

"One piece of this puzzle is having a regulatory framework in place early on to allow for efficient and transparent procurement of generic drugs," Venkatesh said. "This requires the U.S. government, the Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization, generic drug manufacturers in the developing world, as well as the multinational pharmaceutical companies to all be on the same page, at least at some level."

It's apparently not easy to do that, but when it happens, as PEPfAR shows, it can save and prolong millions of lives.

Here is a stylish way to support the 12th Avenue Arts project, Capitol Hill Housing's development that will combine parking for the East Precinct with affordable housing and space for Capitol Hill theater groups on 12th beween Pine and E Olive St. The Cap Hill caps will be on sale at Rudy's and Caffe Vita. We're checking on the price -- but you can probably afford it. We wrote more about the community capital campaign and financing of the 12th Ave project here.

12th Avenue Arts, a project of Capitol Hill Housing, will transform a parking lot into a beautiful building ? integrating affordable housing, arts space, nonprofit and community work space, and local retail under one roof. Working with the City of Seattle, arts groups, local businesses, and community leaders, Capitol Hill Housing is activating a key block to ensure diverse benefits for the entire neighborhood.

This project will help address the displacement of cultural organizations from Capitol Hill, long a center of artistic activity in Seattle. 12th Avenue Arts will ensure the availability of permanently affordable space, allowing the performing arts to thrive, and enhancing the economic and cultural vitality of Capitol Hill and the greater Seattle area.

?The 12th Avenue Arts project will help retain the creativity and vibrancy Capitol Hill is known for,? said Chris Persons, Capitol Hill Housing CEO. ?Ensuring a strong presence for the arts on Capitol Hill is an important part of developing a diverse and sustainable community.?

Groundbreaking is expected to take place in Late 2012, with the building opening in 2014. The 12th Avenue Arts development is possible in part because of Capitol Hill Housing?s first ever capital campaign, and the support of individuals, foundations, businesses, and government.

Rudy?s Barbershop was one of the earliest business supporters of the 12th Avenue Arts campaign. Rudy?s is continuing to help raise support for the development through their latest promotion, a hat inspired by the project. Penn-Mar program matches consumers with jobs

By ASHLEY M. WISLOCK
Daily Record/Sunday News

Ed LaRicci spends 20 hours a week cutting glass samples -- a task he considers to be "the best job in the world."

"It's pretty fun," he said of his position at Archetype Frameless Glass in York Township. "And the people are really nice."

Lik LeRicci, Amy Gemmil enjoys the time she spends with her co-workers at Brown's Orchards & Farm Market in Springfield Township.

LaRicci and Gemmil both found their jobs through an employment program at Penn-Mar Human Services, which has offices in York County and Maryland

The organization's customized employment program works with 36 individuals, said Laura Tieman, director of Penn-Mar's Maryland programs.

Penn-Mar assists people with developmental disabilities through a range of educational, vocational and residential programs.

The organization's employment program matches consumers with open positions, said Greg T. Miller, president and chief executive officer at Penn-Mar.

Once a business reaches out with an available position, Penn-Mar pairs a client's skills with the company's needs.

"We're not trying to fit a square box in a round hole," Miller said. "We want to find a position for a person that is in line with their skill talents and their career goals."

Consumers in the program can work full-time hours or just a couple hours a week, Miller said.

"It's not a one-size-fits-all thing," he said.

Customized employment allows clients like LaRicci and Gemmil to experience something others might take for granted, Miller said.

"We all want to be doing things that add value to our life, and a job is something that everyone feels a sense of pride in," he said. "Our goal is to help people get what they want out of life."

Last summer, Archetype Frameless Glass called Penn-Mar about finding an employee to fill the sample-cutting position, said Paul Weber, president and owner of the company.

Weber said he heard about Penn-Mar's program through a friend and decided to try it out.

LaRicci started in September and is "reliable, focused and eager to work" everyday, said Paul Weber, president and owner of the company.

"Since September, he's never missed a day of work and he's never been late," he said.

LaRicci said he enjoys the steady pace of his job and likes working with different types of glass, which can include colors, designs or even fabrics.

"I like the colors they have, it's very pretty," he said.

Weber said he would recommend the program to other business owners.

"It's a great way of getting something while giving something back at the same time," he said.

Stan Brown, owner of Brown's Orchards, said he feels the same way.

Gemmil works three afternoons a week, cleaning the caf? area and restocking table supplies.

"She does a thorough job and she takes her job very seriously," he said.

Gemmil has been working at Brown's for the past seven years, and has made plenty of friends.

"When I'm here, I feel like I'm part of the family," she said.

Fast facts

Penn-Mar assists people with developmental disabilities through a range of educational, vocational and residential programs. One of their programs is customized employment, which matches Penn-Mar consumers with jobs throughout the area.

Here are some facts about Penn-Mar:

36: Number of Penn-Mar consumers in the Customized Employment program

33: Number of businesses in Pennyslvania and Maryland that employ Penn-Mar consumers through its customized employment program.

Participating businesses include:

Radically different Windows 8 will launch by the end of October

Windows 8 is coming. Windows 8 is coming. And for users updating from an older version of Windows (for a limited time), it'll cost only $40. So when should you start cleaning up your hard drive? Microsoft says Windows 8 will launch by the end of October.

Announced this morning, Microsoft revealed that the final build of Windows 8 will be unleashed on OEM partners (original equipment manufacturers) in August to give them enough time to integrate the operating system into PCs for an October release.

If you've been following along, you'll know that the face of Windows 8 is a radical departure from the Start menu and desktop interface that many PC users have grown accustomed to over the last few decades.

There will be two main builds of Windows: "RT" for ARM-powered tablets that strictly stick to the Metro interface and "Pro" which includes the classic desktop view and runs all Intel x86 apps.

The timing of Windows 8 is par for the course for a major operating system release from Microsoft. The final build of Windows 7 was released on July 22, 2009 to PC makers and shipped to the public on October 22, 2009.

Who's excited for Windows 8? I have to say, Windows 8 represents such a new strategy for Microsoft ? a direct charge at the consumer with an attractive and fresh interface that Windows 8 will have my money on day one.

US heat wave eases, but death toll rises

The heat was to blame for at least 66 deaths across the U.S., where hundreds of thousands remain without electricity after severe storms last week. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

By NBC, msbc.com and The Associated Press

Updated at 8:36 p.m. ET: The heat that blanketed much of the U.S. began to ease up from unbearable to merely very hot Sunday as temperatures from the Midwest to the East Coast dropped from highs above 100 degrees down to the 90s.

Cooler air swept southward in the eastern half of the country, bringing down some temperatures by 15 or more degrees from Saturday's highs, which topped 100 in cities including Philadelphia, Washington, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky.

For many areas, the cooler temperatures were ushered in by thunderstorms that knocked out power to thousands. In New Jersey, a line of strong, fast-moving storms knocked out power to nearly 70,000 on Saturday night.

The heat was blamed for at least 74 deaths across the country in the past two weeks, according to NBC News.?A 4-month-old girl died and a 16-month-old girl was hospitalized in suburban Indianapolis after they?were found Saturday trapped in separate cars during 105-degree heat. In Marion County, Ind.,?a?92-year-old man was found dead inside his home that was closed up and not ventilated and a 54-year old man was found dead outside near his residence in extreme heat on Saturday. And in New Jersey, a 48-year-old woman was struck and killed by lightning on Saturday night while walking along a sea wall with friends and family at a Monmouth County beach.

?

Temperatures in the 90s are a welcome relief after days when the mercury hit triple digits. But with cooler air comes a new threat ? severe storms. The Weather Channel's Kelly Cass reports.

The heat wave has been near-unprecedented for several major cities, according to NBC News. In Chicago, the temperature reached 100 degrees for three consecutive days from Wednesday through Friday, which ties the records of July 3-5, 1911, and Aug. 4-6, 1947. St. Louis' streak of 10 consecutive days of 100 or higher (June 28 through July 7) has only been topped by the Dust Bowl year of 1936 when the streak was 13 days. In Minneapolis, the mercury hit triple-digits on Wednesday and Friday at the Twin Cities International Airport; the last year there were at least two 100-degree high temperatures in the Twin Cities was 1988, when there were four. And Washington hit 100 on Sunday for the fourth consecutive day, tying a record set July 19-22, 1930.

The heat caused highways to buckle in Illinois and Wisconsin, officials said. In Maryland, investigators said heat likely caused rails to kink and led a commuter train to partially derail Friday. No one was injured.

Forecasters warned that a new round of record highs could soon bake Western states.

"It's going to start as soon as tomorrow - really everybody in the Rockies is going to see this heat,'' said Alan Reppert, senior meteorologist for Accuweather.com. He said a high-pressure system developing over the Rockies will cause temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Salt Lake City by Wednesday.

Celebrating the warm summer months, as schools let out and the cooling off begins

To stay cool, Americans tried familiar solutions ? dipping into the pool, going to the movies and riding subways just to be in air conditioning.

Even the beach offered no respite. Atlantic City, N.J., home of the famed boardwalk, set a temperature record Saturday of 100 degrees.

Working outdoors in New Jersey on Saturday was Freddie Jackson, a 48-year-old Toms River man who sells roses by the dozen from his car, which was parked in a heavily shaded area off a major highway. Clad in shorts, sandals and a white T-shirt, Jackson said he would stay out as long as he felt safe ? and business was good.

"I do this mainly to make a few extra bucks, so I'm not going to stay if I started feeling (the heat)," he said.

The Weather Channel's Alex Wallace reports.

Jackson said his teenage daughter stopped by to bring him a cooler with several bottles of water, and he had a couple of ham and cheese sandwiches with him.

"I'm tempted to leave them out in the sun for a while and see if I end up with grilled cheese," he joked.

If Americans ventured outside to do anything, they did it early. But even then, the heat was stifling.

"It was baking on the 18th green," said golfer Zeb Rogerson, who teed off at 6 a.m. at an Alexandria, Va., golf course but was sweltering by the end of his round.

In South Bend, Ind., serious kayakers took to the East Race Waterway, a 1,900-foot-long manmade whitewater course near downtown.

"A lot of times I'll roll over just to cool off," said Robert Henry of Carmel, just north of Indianapolis. "The biggest challenge is walking coming back up carrying a kayak three-eighths of a mile in this heat."

In Manhattan, customers who stepped in to see "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" at an IFC movie theater were there for more than entertainment.

"Of course we came to cool off!" said John Villanova, a writer who was on his second sweaty T-shirt of the day and expecting to change again by evening.

He said that earlier, he rode a Manhattan subway back and forth for a half an hour, with no destination in mind "because it really keeps you cool."

Chicago heat doesn't keep these seniors from aerobics

In Chicago, street magician Jeremy Pitt-Payne said he has been working throughout the three-day stretch of triple-digit temperatures, but acknowledged that he might doff the Union Jack leather vest by the end of the day, even though it's part of his British magician character along with the black top hat.

His trick for beating the heat? He starts his shows at 2 p.m., "when the Trump Tower is gracious enough to block out the sun" along his stretch of sidewalk.
