EUGENE, Ore. ? Galen Rupp grew up in Oregon, so when he sees rain falling the way it did on the first day of Olympic trials, he sees an opportunity, not a roadblock.

No wonder, then, that with rain pounding the track, Rupp was at his best. Running the 10,000 meters in a downpour Friday, Rupp still set a trials record, finishing in 27 minutes, 25.33 seconds.

Next, he'll be off to another place where they know a little about rainy days ? London ? for a trip to his second Olympics.

"I wasn't worried about it at all," said Rupp, who often has to wear a mask when he runs to keep his allergies from acting up. "I'm from Oregon. I love running in this weather. It's good for my allergies. I was excited to see it was really raining."

His was the most impressive performance on opening day in rainy Eugene, save possibly for the effort decathlete Ashton Eaton put in. With Bruce Jenner watching from the stands, Eaton made it through the first five events on pace to break a 20-year-old American record held by Dan O'Brien.

Later, in the women's 10K, Amy Hastings won in 31 minutes, 58.36 seconds to get the Olympic spot denied her when she finished fourth by 1:11 at the marathon trials earlier this year in Houston.

"Coming across the finish line today, it was night and day different," Hastings said. "It was heartbreaking in Houston. I can't even believe it right now."

While the long-distance runners and decathletes were grinding, the sprinters used Day 1 to warm up ? not a bad idea considering the wet chill that gripped Hayward Field all day long, leaving puddles on the track and turning parts of the infield mushy.

Sanya Richards-Ross, LaShawn Merritt, Allyson Felix and Carmelita Jeter all made it through their opening heats with minimal problems.

"Other than it messing up my hair, it's OK," Richards-Ross said after running her first 400-meter qualifier in 51.69 seconds.

Merritt, the defending Olympic champion at 400 meters, took to the rain-slickened track, sidestepped a runner who slipped and fell in the lane next to him and finished in 45.36 seconds, the best time in the men's heats.

"I saw him and I had to do a little step more toward the inside of my lane, where I should've been in the first place," Merritt said.

Jeremy Wariner, the 2004 Olympic champion, also advanced to the semifinals, though his race wasn't quite such a breeze. He finished third in his heat in a time of 45.84.

"Just clearing the cobwebs out," Wariner said. "I worked my turn pretty well. I saved a lot for the homestretch."

David Neville, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, finished last in his heat and won't go to London unless he is chosen for the relay team.

The 400 runners have semifinals Saturday, with finals scheduled for Sunday.

In the women's 100, Felix and Jeter each won their heats easily.

"It was OK. Just wanted to make it safely to the next round," said Felix, who is using the 100 to stay sharp for her main event, the 200. "I feel like tomorrow will be better. Always good to get that first one out of the way."

In the women's 100 hurdles, Dawn Harper, the defending Olympic champion, won her heat in 12.79 seconds ? a victory she earned even though she didn't have the ideal, track-grabbing spikes in her shoes.

"I actually change spikes" when it rains, she said. "Usually, the pointier ones grab the track. It was on my mind out there because I had the older ones in."

Lolo Jones also qualified but not by much. She finished third in her heat for the last automatic qualifying spot after running 13.01. Her race was delayed when Shericka Ward false started.

"I felt really good, but it was a bad race," Jones said. "After the false start, I just relaxed a little bit too much."

Meet organizers scrubbed women's pole vault preliminaries, meaning all 29 athletes, including 2008 Olympic silver medalist Jenn Suhr, will move to finals Sunday.

In the decathlon, Eaton was ahead of a world-record pace for two events. His shot put throw of 46 feet, 7 3/4 inches slowed him down, but he still ended the day with 4,728 points ? 322 ahead of Trey Hardee and 17 ahead of the pace O'Brien was on when he set the American record in 1992.

"This is the culmination of a lot of hard work my team has put in," Eaton said.

Eaton, an Oregon native, also closed the day by running in the pouring rain, finishing the 400 meters in 46.70 seconds. He looked very much at home.

As did Rupp, who will be joined on the 10K team by Matt Tegenkamp (27:33.94) and Dathan Ritzenhein (27:36.09).

After many months filled with injuries and the heartbreak of missing the marathon team by 8 seconds, Ritzenhein needed to beat the 'A' standard of 27:45 to qualify in the 10K. He did and made his third Olympics.

"It's been a rough road," he said. "The last few years have been very difficult, for sure."

So while he celebrates a spot in the Olympics, most of the rest were simply glad to still be in the hunt ? advancing on a slip-and-slide kind of day, knowing that under U.S. rules, the top three qualify ? no excuses or second chances, no matter the conditions.

"You have to adapt to what the weather is, how the track is," Merritt said. "Know what you're doing before you get out there. You know the weather, the wind, and the track is slippery. It's all about going in with a plan and executing."

Robot builds 3-D map of ancient Roman sewers

8 hrs.

Roman archaeologists are using an interesting new tool to map and study one of the ancient city's little-appreciated features: Its sewers. They've deployed a?remotely?controlled rover called an "archeo-robot" to help them create a detailed and complete map of the extensive waterways.

Ancient Rome's "cloaca maxima," Latin for greatest or largest sewer, was a marvel at the time of its use, permitting great quantities of waste water to flow away from the city center. It still functions today, draining rainwater from the historic Forum area of Rome.

A team was recently brought in to study and map the main sewer and its several secondary tunnels. To do it properly, they decided to use a little remote bot equipped with high-definition cameras, atmospheric sensors and a laser-scanning system that would capture the pipes and stones in 3-D. This will allow them to get very exact dimensions as well as an explorable model.

The results are quite cool-looking, and should be of utility to scholars and historians who have often wondered about the cloaca maxima and its construction. You can see a short video of some of the data they've collected here.

The group doing the work is called Indissoluble, and they've placed much more information regarding the archeo-robot on the project's site.

Scandal-hit Italy turns to patriotism vs England

By ANDREW DAMPF

updated 1:33 p.m. ET June 22, 2012

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -With surprisingly little fan support in stadiums at the European Championship, Italy is taking motivation from a passionate message sent to the squad by the country's president.

His voice cracking with emotion, Giorgio Napolitano wished the team well ahead of Sunday's quarterfinal with England, saying advancing from the group stage had provided a boost to the nation.

Later, Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon opened a routine news conference with a statement to explain how much the message means to the squad, which has been affected by a match-fixing and betting scandal back home.

"In a tough time for our country and for our profession, it gives us a lot of strength," said Buffon, who recently had his banking records examined on suspicion he made large bets. "Spoken by someone of his stature, it doesn't go unobserved. ... We hope we can repay him, and our nation, with the pride and joy that comes with wearing this shirt."

Napolitano attended Italy's opening 1-1 draw with Spain, and hugged Buffon after going down to the changing room after the match. No Italian politicians will attend the match in Kiev to protest the treatment of jailed Ukraine opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

The presence of the 86-year-old Napolitano evoked memories of former Italy President Sandro Pertini cheering the Azzurri on during their title run at the 1982 World Cup, which came in the wake of a similar betting scandal.

"We really created a special feeling of reciprocal respect," Buffon said Friday. "He's our top citizen and also our top fan."

While never known for traveling en masse, Italian supporters were greatly outnumbered at each of the team's group games against Spain, Croatia and Ireland. With Italy hit by hard economic times, only 3,000 fans are expected in Kiev compared to more than 10,000 English supporters.

Special charter planes arranged to fly fans in have been canceled due to low demand.

The week before Italy flew to Poland, reports surfaced over large payments from Buffon to the owner of a tobacco shop in Parma that is also a betting parlor. Buffon has not been placed under investigation and is not accused of any wrongdoing, but the revelations still shook the Azzurri camp.

Also, center back Leonardo Bonucci is under investigation for match-fixing and fullback Domenico Criscito was a late cut from the squad after he, too, was placed under investigation.

Buffon has been Italy's starting goalkeeper for more than a decade and, with 117 appearances, is the Azzurri's most experienced player.

When Italy won the 2006 World Cup amid a similar match-fixing scandal involving his Juventus club, Buffon was one of the standout players - conceding only two goals in seven matches, with one of them an own-goal and the other a penalty from France's Zinedine Zidane in the final.

"We nearly always have (a scandal)," Buffon said. "So we're probably used to living with these difficulties."

Moody's cuts outlook for US muni debt

Moody's kept the downgrades going Friday by cutting the ratings for $64 billion in US municipal bonds.?

The bonds include debts owed by 1,675 state and local governments, Reuters said. Natural gas bonds issued by utilities in Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas also saw ratings downgrades.?

Moody's said it was cutting ratings on state and local government bonds because they rely heavily on the 15 banks whose ratings were cut by Moody's Thursday.?

The banks provided "support (that) includes letters of credit, standby bond purchase agreements, and other liquidity facilities," Reuters quoted Moody's as saying.

More from GlobalPost: Moody's bank downgrade is a doozy

Markets didn't flip out to the news, which many investors had been preparing for.

"Some investors selectively sold debt that could be affected ahead of the downgrade, while issuers sought additional ratings for their bonds or got backing from banks that weren't being targeted by Moody's," Dow Jones Newswires said.

"There's not going to be any 'oh my gosh' moment here because this was so well telegraphed," one fund manager told the news agency.?

Y! Big Story: Gut reactions on why food allergies are on the rise

Drink up?

Trading lunch boxes isn't what it used to be.

Overall, about 15 million Americans lay claim to food allergies (as opposed to food intolerances, but more on that later). One out of 13 children may be susceptible. Some allergies can trigger anaphylaxis, when your body goes into immune overload shock. Whether allergens are a peanut, a glass of eggnog, a pat of butter, or a dish of honey walnut prawns, these days more people seem to be rejecting them.

Food allergies (or at least, our ability to diagnose them) are on the rise. But why?

Short answer: Scientists aren't sure, and they're just beginning to dig into the complex world of the human gut, the bacteria within, and the importance of understanding not only what goes down our gullet, but also how much and when.

Food allergies vs. food reactions/intolerances: There's a big difference between food allergies and food intolerances, Dr. Stephanie Leonard of the U.C. San Diego School of Medicine said to Yahoo!. Reactions can be immunologic (food allergies) or non-immunologic. The latter can be pharmacologic (chemical-triggered), toxic (food poisoning), or metabolic.

"The term [allergy] is kind of misleading; you think of sneezing, coughing. 'If my kid has a reaction to any food, they must have a food allergy,'" says Dr. Ruchi Gupta, lead author of the new study "Geographic Variability of Childhood Food Allergy in the United States." She tells Yahoo!, "A food allergy can be immune-mediated. Symptoms can be dangerous and even lead to death."

May contain dairy (Scott Olson:Getty Images)

Why the rise in food allergies: Emergency room visits for food allergies reportedly tripled between 1993 and 2006. Other studies note an 18% increase in overall reporting between 1997 and 2007. Is it the population diversity? Pollutants floating in our environment? More foodstuffs introduced into our cuisine? All that deliciously bad stuff we eat? Might a kind of persuasion bias be affecting appetites -- you know, urban Nervous Nellies who latch onto a health cause like a fashion trend?

While the public uses the terms "food reactions" and "food allergies" interchangeably (stop that please, see above), "researchers do believe that the prevalence of true food allergy is increasing, because such findings have been replicated in multiple studies using different populations," Leonard says. "This rise seems to be specific to developed countries."

Gupta's recent study found living in a city upped your odds of having allergies. Other research suggests more possibly susceptible groups:

Racial and ethnic differences have not been explored widely. In telephone surveys, shellfish allergy was reported at a significantly higher rate among black/African American subjects than white subjects. ... Boys appear to be at higher risk than girls, and perhaps women more than men. ... One study showed a higher risk for increased affluence. Obesity may be ... associated with increased risk for food allergy as well. ... Delaying exposure to allergenic foods in infancy and early childhood may be a risk factor for food allergy. ("Epidemiology of food allergy," 2011, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

Healthier farm living? (Cancan Chu/Getty images)The hygiene hypothesis: There may be as many theories as food allergies about their prevalence, including from when we start eating certain foods, vitamin D levels, fatty acids intake, how we process food, and even antacid use.

One beguiling theory is the hygiene hypothesis. "We live in a clean environment, and our immune system is not busy fighting off infections or parasites. So instead it overreacts to harmless things like food," Leonard says. "This is supported by the fact we don't see high rates of food allergy in developing countries."

That might account for the differences in American city and country dwellers. "Children in rural environments, particularly kids who grow up on farms, seem to have less," Gupta says. The nuances could be attributed to locally grown vs. processed food or hanging around animals. For instance, kids with pets have a lower chance of having asthma, and there's a lot of overlap between asthma conditions and food allergies.

Balancing what's in our gut: Most of us have heard about the Human Genome Project's DNA mapping, but only recently have we heard about the Human Microbiome Project. The five-year microbe census reveals that a trillion bugs reside in our guts alone, and everyone's gut carries a different population -- though they all do the same tasks.

In our hand-sanitizing age of plenty, modern diet and medicines tinker with that balance, leaving our delicate innards vulnerable to a host of ills. The founder of Human Food Project, in a recent tribute to farmers' markets, recommended a return to natural foods to toughen us up.

Increasing evidence suggests that the alarming rise in allergic and autoimmune disorders during the past few decades is at least partly attributable to our lack of exposure to microorganisms that once covered our food and us. ... This research suggests that reintroducing some of the organisms from the mud and water of our natural world would help avoid an overreaction of an otherwise healthy immune response that results in such chronic diseases as Type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and a host of allergic disorders. (June 20, the New York Times)

Food allergies, not just for kids: The good news is, you can outgrow food allergies -- many kids grow out of milk allergies. The bad news is, you can also develop them later in life. And, like a bee sting, allergy reactions can worsen. "Food allergies are unpredictable. Even if you've only had a mild reaction in the past, your next reaction could be severe, and vice versa," Food Allergy Initiative (FAI) executive editor Mary Jane Marchisotto tells Yahoo!. She recommends going to a qualified allergist or immunologist for testing.

One good thing about increased awareness: People are doing the right things, like the probiotic yogurt craze. The obesity campaign may indirectly benefit food allergy sufferers, as fast-food menu makeovers and soda bans contribute to a healthier system overall. And, while food allergy research didn't have the kind of funding that, say, asthma did, more investigators are now tackling the subject.
