Ann Walker: Global Voice Broadcasting Celebrates First Anniversary

Make a wish. Blow out the candle. There's a birthday to celebrate. It's not just a person; there are many people involved. It's not just a place; it will feel like home when you find it. It's more than a family; its all the colorful characters you'd expect in a big one. It's the one-year anniversary of Global Voice Broadcasting (GVB); a dream come true for Tony Sweet and his chic circus of talented hosts and shows on the fastest growing internet radio station start-up, GVBRadio.com.

At this pivotal time in our country's history with the 2012 election being so important, the LGBTQ community is being used as a political wedge by the right-wing politicians and evangelicals. The gay community is under attack from the pulpits all across America. They are spreading hateful rhetoric that is spawning more heinous crimes against our boys and girls in the gay communities. We at Global Voice Broadcasting have a unique opportunity to stand up and have our voices heard globally. We are bringing the stories that local news outlets are not reporting and one man is at the helm of this extraordinary movement. Tony Sweet is encouraging diverse programming on Global Voice Broadcasting to include hosts like myself who are fearless in speaking out against this tidal wave of hate-mongering.

Let me take a moment to divulge a little more about Mr. Sweet: a man who is much more than a radio host, far more than a friend to those who come to know him well; a story that is so uniquely his own. Tony began his journey in Kansas. His love for gospel music brought him to the auditions for Gospel Dream (think American Idol meets GCB) where he was one of the finalists. It was Tony's interview with The Advocate in October 2008 (Ellen's wedding to Portia graced that issue's cover), however, that truly catapulted
him into the queer spotlight. A month after the release of The Advocate article, "On Air With Tony Sweet" was introduced to the Internet airwaves.

"I certainly don't consider myself a gay 'icon,' but I really strive to be the best role model for the community that I can," Tony said when I asked him about his journey to becoming COO of GVB. "It is through my show, and the radio station as a whole, however, that I truly try and celebrate the LGBTQ community."

I came to know Tony when he interviewed me back in 2008. That meeting led to my co-hosting with Tony for the next six months. As they say in the movies, that was the start of a beautiful friendship. My radio experience became infectious; I took my role with Tony very seriously and I was having so much fun. We made a great team, but as my schedule got busier I had to bow out. On my last day, he said, "Ann, you should have your own show. When I start my own station, I'll be calling you." I laughed and kissed him goodbye.

Wouldn't you know it? That country-hunk made his dreams come true! Tony became the co-owner and COO of GVB in May 2011 with CEO and partner (in the business sense of the word) Todd Murray. GVB hit the Internet airwaves with three shows and as its one-year anniversary is celebrated has 23 shows (and counting)! Regarding starting my very own show, Tony fulfilled that promise and, in August 2011, "The Ann Walker Show" was born. I have always been a strong and vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community and an avid follower of politics. So it was an easy decision as to what kind of show I would have. With my reputation of being outspoken, I saw the need to bring awareness about the continued blatant attacks against the civil rights of the gay community, including stories of bullying and the rise of suicides among our most vulnerable, the children. The need is great to give a louder voice to those without one!

GVB airs in 93 countries. With an average of 1.3 million live listeners and twice that many unique downloads, GVB brings over two million listeners to GVBRadio.com every month. "Every show has its own point of view. We have shows about sports, how-to find love, spirituality, comedy, finance, music, fitness, politics, pets, women's issues, entertainment, LGBT-talk and so
much more -- truly something for everyone," Tony said when I asked about what he loves most about the station.

Tony has done more than make his own dreams come true; he's given a platform to a diverse and dynamic group of hosts. Some are media veterans. Some are just starting in radio for the first time. Tony didn't just build GVB from the ground up -- he populated his platform with a fabulously crazy family of hosts, co-hosts, and producers: shows that act as the "voice" for a plethora of demographics and is truly representative of global diversity.

Tony is far from finished building GVB. There are now news segments during the day with all the current and breaking news. One of GVB's hosts takes a turn every Saturday at "My Top 10," an hour of the host's favorite 10 songs. Tony's newest creation is Global Voice Broadcasting's "Playhouse Theatre," broadcasting live theatre via the Internet. No ticket to purchase or parking to pay, just professional theatre at your fingertips. Implemented in January of 2012, the response has been overwhelming with more than 10,000 listeners.

Tony's original dream of a media empire using the Internet is definitely a 24/7 operation. As busy as he is he never seems to tire of mentoring hosts to help their shows grow and flourish which he does daily. All of Tony's efforts are part of his dream to grow GVB to meet the needs and demands of its listeners who are on the move themselves. There are so many ways busy
people get their entertainment and news today we know that this is just the beginning for Global Voice Broadcasting.

(AP) ? Jurors in Jerry Sandusky's child sexual abuse case began deliberations Thursday after prosecutors described him as a serial molester who groomed his victims, while his defense lawyer said the former Penn State assistant football coach was being victimized by an overzealous prosecution and greedy accusers.

Prosecutors said Sandusky was as "a serial, predatory pedophile" who used gifts and the pageantry of Penn State's vaunted football program to lure and abuse vulnerable boys who came from troubled homes.

"What you should do is come out and say to the defendant that he molested and abused and give them back their souls," Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan III. "I give them to you. Acknowledge and give them justice."

Standing behind Sandusky, McGettigan implored the jury to convicted him

"He molested and abused and hurt these children horribly," McGettigan said. "He knows he did it and you know he did it.

"Find him guilty of everything."

Sandusky's attorney said the 68-year-old former coach was being victimized by investigators who led accusers into making false claims about a generous man whose charity gave them much-needed love.

"They went after him, and I submit to you they were going to get him hell or high water, even if they had to coach witnesses," Amendola said in a sometimes angry closing argument.

If convicted, Sandusky could spend the rest of his life in state prison. He is charged with 48 counts related to 10 boys over 15 years. The jury includes nine with ties to Penn State University.

The closing arguments came after seven days testimony, some of it graphically describing alleged abuse suffered at the hands of Sandusky, including touching in showers, fondling and in some cases forced oral or anal sex.

Although Sandusky didn't take the stand in his own defense, McGettigan seized on an interview he gave NBC's "Rock Center" just after his arrest. In it, Sandusky seemed to stumble at times and struggled to give direct answers to questions about his conduct.

Asked if he was sexually attracted to boys, Sandusky told NBC's Bob Costas, "Sexually attracted, you know, I, I enjoy young people. I, I love to be around them. ... No, I'm not sexually attracted to young boys."

McGettigan said, "I would think that the automatic response, if someone asks you if you're a criminal, a pedophile, a child molester, or anything along those lines, would be, 'You're crazy. No. Are you nuts?'"

Prosecutors said Sandusky met his victims through The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth he had founded.

Eight young men testified that they were abused by the former Penn State assistant football coach, and jurors also heard about two other alleged victims through other witnesses, including another former coach.

It was the testimony of that coach, then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, that prompted university trustees the fire longtime coach Joe Paterno and the university's president.

Sandusky has repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense at trial included a suggestion that his accusers have a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact.

McGettigan displayed the pictures of eight smiling children for the jury, reminding them of what he said were lives forever altered by Sandusky's abuse.

"These are childhoods ravished," he said. "Memories destroyed."

But Amendola anticipated that in his own closing statement, telling jurors not to let the prosecution tug their heartstrings.

"I'll be the first one to tell you that if he did this, he should rot in jail," Amendola said. "But what if he didn't do it? His life is destroyed. Don't be fooled. Don't get tied up with the pictures."

The eight accusers testified about a range of alleged abuse, from kissing and massages to groping, oral sex and anal rape. Penn State football assistant Mike McQueary said he witnessed Sandusky in a team shower with a young boy more than a decade ago, and is convinced Sandusky was molesting the child.

Amendola questioned McQueary's recollection of what happened, of what he claimed to see and hear in a football facility shower and how he reacted afterward, going to his father and Dr. Jonathan Dranov, who then said he should report what he saw to Joe Paterno.

"Do they say 'We have to call the police?' You know what they said. 'Talk to Joe Paterno,'" Amendola told the jurors.

If McQueary believed that he saw Sandusky raping a boy, why would McQueary later attend a Second Mile event, Amendola asked.

"If this man was performing horrific sexual acts on young kids, would you continue to support him in a tournament?" he said. "It doesn't make sense."

"Does Joe Paterno say we've got to call the police?" Amendola asked.

Defense witnesses, including Sandusky's wife, Dottie, described his philanthropic work with children over the years, and many of the 28 defense witnesses spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary about the 2001 incident. The scandal also led to the ouster of university president Graham Spanier, and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

Earlier Thursday, the judge in the case threw out three of the 51 child sex-abuse charges against Sandusky.

Judge John Cleland found one count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and one count of aggravated indecent assault involving the accuser known as Victim 4 weren't supported by the evidence. Another charge of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse involving another boy was dismissed because Cleland said it duplicated another count.

That left 48 counts for jurors to consider.

Microsoft: 'Amazing games coming to Windows Phone 8'

1 hr.

At its Windows Phone Summit Wednesday, Microsoft showed off its new mobile operating system and in doing so highlighted how Windows Phone 8 will bring some?big improvements to mobile gaming.

One of the primary points Microsoft wanted the developers,?tech pundits and, yes, gamers,?to take away from its presentation was the importance of gaming ?- and how Windows Phone 8 will make it easier to bring PC games to mobile phones.

Microsoft execs announced that Windows Phone 8 would use a native game development platform based on DirectX and showed off how, when Windows Phone 8 arrives in the fall, it will share a "common core" with the Windows 8 operating system for the PC.

As our own Wilson Rothman explains, what this means is that "under the hood,?the phone platform will look enough like a Windows PC to share common file formats, networking,?security protocols, IT?management tools and apps." (Check out Wilson's full?coverage of the Windows Phone 8 event?right here.)

All of this means that developers won't have to spend a bunch of time re-writing code and can, instead, quickly port PC games to Windows phones.

Middleware partners such as Havok Technology and Autodesk will support Windows Phone 8. And?Havok?s Andrew Bowell took to the stage Wednesday to explain that Windows Phone 8 games developed using the Havok?Technology Suite, will feature "immersive and real 3-D worlds, highly realistic characters and cinematic visuals."

Microsoft it trying hard to woo more developers to its smartphone platform ?- and understandably so. When it comes to the amount of apps available, Microsoft's current mobile operating system -- Windows Phone 7 ?- is signficiantly behind the Android and iOS platforms.

But?"amazing games are coming to Windows Phone 8," promises Microsoft's Kevin Gallo.

(AP) ? Laurie Metcalf will be heading back to Broadway in the thriller "The Other Place."

Manhattan Theatre Club announced Thursday that it will produce Sharr White's play, which had its world premiere off-Broadway last year at MCC Theater. Previews will begin Dec. 11 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and opening night is set for Jan. 10.

Metcalf, an original member of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater, will reprise her role as a brilliant researcher stopped short by an unnamed neurological disease and the unraveling of her family. Tony Award winner Joe Mantello will direct, as he did at MCC.

Metcalf is currently in "Long Day's Journey into Night" in London's West End. Her other Broadway roles include "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and "November" opposite Nathan Lane.

She won three Emmy Awards for her role as Jackie Harris on "Roseanne" and her films include "Internal Affairs" and "Uncle Buck." Metcalf won an Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel Award last year for her work on "The Other Place."

Manhattan Theatre Club also revealed another production it will mount next summer off-Broadway ? the comedy "The Explorers Club" by Nell Benjamin, who wrote "Legally Blonde."
