Cancer Deaths Lower, But Some Say Not Enough

POSTED: 2:26 pm CST January 4, 2012
UPDATED: 3:02 pm CST January 4, 2012

A new report from the American Cancer Society shows that death rates from cancer have been going down since 1999, with the risk of death from cancer declining by more than 1% in both men and women. About 1 million deaths from cancer have been avoided since around 1991.That sounds promising, but it's not as good as it could be, says Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society and CNNHealth.com conditions expert."Our data on cancer causation and cancer prevention tells us that we could have done a lot better," Brawley said.Given all of the available information about how to prevent, screen for and treat cancer effectively, it appears that up to 200,000 lives could have been saved in 2008 if all of those known measures had been taken, Brawley said. More specifically, many of those deaths would not have occurred if more people hadn't been smoking over the past 20 years. That's because it takes about 20 to 30 years of smoking to develop lung cancer."It's not truly a war if we have 200,000 avoidable casualties in one year and everybody yawns," Brawley said. The American Cancer Society report, called Cancer Statistics, 2012, estimated that more than 1.6 million new cancer cases and about 580,000 deaths from cancer will occur in the United States in 2012.Besides tobacco, the combination of obesity, high caloric intake and lack of physical activity is causing cancer among many Americans, Brawley said. This will one day surpass tobacco as the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, he said.Cancers of the pancreas, liver and esophagus were found to be on the rise and can all be tied to obesity, Brawley said. Hepatitis B and C, transmitted sexually and through intravenous drug use, may also lead to liver cancer. The report also showed a rise in the incidence of thyroid cancer, which could be because of improved diagnostic methods, as well as increasing rates of throat cancer, which could be tied to the spread of human papillomavirus during the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s. The HPV vaccine, available for young men and women aged 11 to 26, may help prevent cases of cancers of the head and neck, Brawley said, in addition to its role fighting cervical cancer in women and genital warts in men.Access to treatment is another major issue in avoiding cancer deaths, Brawley said. A substantial minority of cancer patients do not get the treatment they need, many times because of lack of insurance coverage.More science needs to be done on other possible causes of cancer from environmental causes, such as air pollutants and chemicals in plastics, Brawley said.

Freshman Brittany Rountree added 14 points, including two free throws with 16.7 seconds left to push UNC's lead to four.

Miami (11-3, 0-1) had a chance to tie it late, but Riquna Williams missed a layup after pushing past Rountree in transition. Shegog grabbed the rebound and was fouled with two seconds left. She missed both free throws, but Morgan Stroman's hurried heave from beyond midcourt wasn't close as the horn sounded.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Leading scorer C.J. Harris was held out of Wake Forest's game against Wofford on Monday night with a strained groin.

Harris injured his groin late in a victory over Yale on Dec. 29 and was sidelined as a precaution. Team officials said Harris was expected back for the Demon Deacons' Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Virginia Tech on Saturday.

He was on the bench for the Wofford game in street clothes.

Harris is a third-year starter who leads Wake Forest with an 18.7-point average.

NCAROLINA-PAIGE-MOSS-NFL

UNC's Paige-Moss to enter the NFL draft

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina says junior defensive end Donte Paige-Moss has told Tar Heels coaches he plans to enter the NFL draft.

Paige-Moss played all 13 games and finished with 29 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Tar Heels' loss to Missouri in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 26.

Paige-Moss' numbers fell significantly from his sophomore season, when he started 12 games. He had 49 tackles, 13? tackles for loss and seven sacks in 2010, but found himself playing behind touted NFL prospect Quinton Coples and sophomore Kareem Martin this season.

Arab League says Syria monitors are helping (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? The head of the Arab League has said its peace monitors are helping to ease a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Syria, but urged President Bashar al-Assad's government to carry out a peace plan in full.

Meanwhile army defectors whose armed insurgency has threatened to overshadow the peaceful popular uprising captured dozens of members of the security forces by seizing two checkpoints Monday, the opposition said.

Army defectors also clashed with security forces at a third checkpoint, killing and wounding an unspecified number of troops loyal to Assad, opposition activists said.

Assad is struggling to defeat a popular uprising and avoid becoming the latest leader to be toppled by "Arab Spring" revolutions, after those of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

After nearly 10 months of violence in which the United Nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed, mostly unarmed civilians, an Arab League monitoring mission has spent the past week assessing Assad's compliance with a peace plan.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby said Monday that Syria's military had now withdrawn from residential areas and was on the outskirts of the cities, but gunfire continued and snipers were still a threat.

"The latest telephone report said there is gunfire from different places, which makes it hard to say who is shooting who," Elaraby said in Cairo. "Gunfire should be stopped and there are snipers."

"We call upon the Syrian government to fully commit to what it promised."

PEACE PLAN

The League's plan calls for Assad to pull troops and tanks from the streets, free detainees and talk to his opponents.

Elaraby said the monitors had secured the release of 3,484 prisoners and succeeded in getting food supplies into Homs, one of the centers of the violence. "Give the monitoring mission the chance to prove its presence on the ground," he said.

But many Syrian opposition activists are skeptical that the mission can put real pressure on Assad to halt the violence.

Sunday, the Arab Parliament, an 88-member committee of delegates from each of the League's member states, called for the monitors to leave Syria, saying their mission was providing cover for unabated violence and abuses by the government.

Two people were killed by gunfire in Homs Monday, and the bodies of another two were handed over to their families, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Security forces killed a farmer in Douma, on the northeastern edge of Damascus, as they carried out raids searching for suspects wanted by authorities, it said.

TAKING RISKS

Kinan Shami, a member of the Syrian Revolution Coordinating Union activists' group, said from Damascus that people were taking huge risks by gathering in cities where Arab League monitors were expected, in the hope of talking to them.

"People expected them in Daraya yesterday on New Year's Day and thousands went to the main square, raised the Independence Flag on a mast and gathered around it. Security forces shot at them and killed two protesters," Shami said.

"The people are trying to show the monitors the repression and are risking their lives to meet them because everywhere they go the monitors are surrounded by security... Other than getting arrested and beaten or killed, they could easily face endless counts of treason and communicating with foreign powers."

But Issam Ishak, a senior member of the main opposition Syrian National Council, said the monitors must be given a chance. "Their presence is helping further erode the fear factor and is encouraging the expansion of the protests."

The reported attacks on military checkpoints came three days after the anti-government Free Syrian Army said it had ordered its fighters to stop offensive operations while it tried to arrange a meeting with the Arab League delegates.

Rami Abdelrahman, director of the Observatory, said Monday's operation had taken place in the northern province of Idlib. It was not immediately clear how many people had been killed or captured by the rebels.

The government bars most foreign journalists from operating in Syria, making it difficult to verify witness accounts. Assad blames the unrest on foreign-backed armed Islamists who officials say have killed 2,000 security personnel.

The state news agency SANA said a worker at a school in the city of Hama had been killed by armed men who captured her three days ago after her husband, who worked at the same school, refused their demands that he leave his job.

SANA also said a journalist working for state radio had died Monday from wounds sustained when gunmen shot him several days ago in Daraya, in Damascus province.

Robin Wood, B.C. Senior, Shot Dead In Mexico While Trying To Stop Home Invasion

VANCOUVER - Residents of a small B.C. island are reacting with shock at the news that one of their own has been shot and killed in Mexico.

Robin Wood, a 67-year-old resident of Salt Spring Island, was killed Tuesday during an apparent home invasion in the town of Melaque, south of Puerto Vallarta.

According to media reports, the retired mechanic had been at a concert and returned to the home of a friend, another B.C. man, when the attack happened.

Wolfgang Temmel, owner of Ganges Auto Marine, said he knew Wood for many years and was in "absolute shock" when he heard the tragic news while standing in a lineup at a bank.

"He was as flaky as a good pie crust but just adorable all the same. Very bright person. I don't think anybody disliked him," said Temmel who once employed Wood.

Temmel called Wood "a character" who was always pleasant, happy to see the people he knew, and would take life's difficulties in stride.

Temmel also called Wood a very good mechanic who because of his English accent had to frequently respond to questions about British cars.

"One of his quotes was 'why do people always think I like to work on English cars?'" said Temmel with a chuckle.

In fact, said Temmel, Wood wasn't fascinated with British cars.

Fellow Salt Spring Islander and mechanic Erik Lundstrom shared Temmel's characterization of Wood, saying his former co-worker was known for being upbeat.

"It was just his cheerful attitude, he was always optimistic in life, you know," said Lundstrom.

George Grams, an elected trustee with the Islands Trust, said he didn't know Wood but expects the killing to be a subject of discussion in the tight-knit community.

Grams said Melaque is very popular with islanders, and many locals travel to the Mexican city annually.

Pink Floyd To Reunite For 2012 London Olympics?

Pink Floyd

MJ Kim, Getty Images

Rumors set the woods alight, and the fire around Pink Floyd has begun. According to the London Evening Standard, the legendary band?s surviving members will reunite to close out the London 2012 Olympics.

An ?insider? tells the paper, ?It?s long been made clear it would take something very special to get Pink Floyd back together again and it doesn?t get any bigger than the Olympics.? The source then added ?they have been a major part of the nation?s culture over the past 40 years and it will be very fitting that they?re involved when London is on show to the world. It?s hoped everything can be confirmed in the coming weeks.?

The last time Pink Floyd were all onstage together was in 2005 for the Live 8 event. Bob Geldof was able to get the four to set aside any bad blood that had accrued over the years and plug in again. Prior to that, you?d have to go back nearly 25 years to find all four members of the band?s most famous lineup on the same stage.

However, last year, during a performance of ?The Wall? in London, Roger Waters was joined onstage by both David Gilmour and Nick Mason. Gilmour caught the sold-out crowd by surprise when he appeared high atop ?The Wall? to sing and play his spine-chilling solo on the Floyd classic ?Comfortably Numb.? Mason appeared at show?s end joining his former cohorts onstage.

Keyboardist Rick Wright passed away in 2008, just two years after the passing of original mastermind Syd Barrett, who, though?ages removed from the band?s most successful years, was still a central figure in all things Pink Floyd.

With Paul McCartney already on board for either the opening or closing ceremonies, would Pink Floyd take another go round? David Gilmour seems to be the hardest egg to crack here. Both Waters and Mason have planted notions that they would be game for such a reunion, but both have also been cautious on the subject. Mason said it would have to be ?a grander version of Live 8, driven by someone even more major than Bob Geldof.? And following the seemingly impromptu reuniting with Gilmour last year, Waters said on his website ?I should also remind you that tonight is most definitely a one-off.?

So will the London Olympic ceremonies bring them back together? Or will it only happen when pigs fly? Only time, when not ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, will tell.

Google bans Siri knockoff from Android Market, but legit competitors persist (Appolicious)

Apple didn?t invent voice control when it rolled out its Siri personal assistant software with the iPhone 4S, but it definitely has garnered a lot of attention for the software. More than one Android developer is trying to get in on that popularity, some less legitimately than others.

Devices running Google?s Android mobile operating system have had voice control capabilities for a while now, but the thing about Siri is that it takes existing technology (voice-to-text and voice command tech have been around for years) and has found a way to make it work better than most people are used to. While I?ve watched my Android-owning friends repeatedly trying to use their voice control apps to find an address or call a loved one, often repeating themselves once or twice just to get the software on the same page, Siri is billed as being a lot more responsive and being able to understand a lot more speech more intuitively.

Siri is so popular that it?s seeing lots of attempts to get the iPhone 4S-exclusive software to other, older iOS devices, and it?s also seeing knock-off attempts in the Android Market. Google just banned an app that billed itself as Siri for Android, as GadgetBox reports. But there are other developers trying to catch Siri?s lightning in a bottle with real apps.

The Siri for Android app garnered at least 1,000 downloads before it was banned, GadgetBox?s story says. But the app didn?t pack the Siri software, instead it just presented a button on the device?s screen that resembled the Siri button on iPhone 4S displays, and that button just activated Android?s built-in voice control features.

Meanwhile, as SlashGear reports, two Android developers have teamed up to create a Siri-like app for Android that really can compete with Apple?s version. The app is called Iris, and is developed by Dextera. That developer is pairing with a competitor, ChaCha, in order to create a giant info database for Iris that will allow it to rival Siri, which draws its information from sources such as Yelp. ChaCha already has a giant database that allows users to type in their questions and get information from the Internet; pairing it with Iris brings in the voice-recognition side of the equation.

It?s likely that Iris and ChaCha will both be helping one another to improve in the future to keep up with Siri and provide an alternative that Android users can get behind. Meanwhile, Siri is going to be improving, too ? Apple released the software as a beta product, which means there?s still development to be done. Expect Siri to be more robust with the release of the iPhone 5, likely later this year. Hopefully Android developers will work hard to keep pace, and keep Android competitive with Apple?s popular new feature.

Israel to Alert Citizens Against Incoming Missiles Via SMS

Israel's military will soon warn citizens in real time and in multiple languages of incoming missiles that are not intercepted via SMS.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) plan to activate in June the alert system developed by eViglio and mobile phone maker Ericsson.

The IDF's Home Front Command tested on Sunday the text alert system in the central part of the Israel with the SMS sent in Hebrew, English, Russian, Arabic and Amharic. The alert system, which is already being used to warn of earthquakes and hurricanes, also sends warning to television and radio stations, web sites and billboards.

The SMS alert system is part of the IDF's defence system against missile attacks from Palestinian fighters in Gaza. The defence system includes the Iron Dome, which fires missiles to destroy Kassam rockets used by Hamas fighters.

Like us on Facebook

The IDF's current alert system for incoming missiles is a siren that is sounded when a Kassam rocket is detected.?This warning system called Red Color gives Israeli residents near Gaza 15 to 45 seconds to run for cover.

Kibbutzim (collective communities), towns and factories in northern Israel close to the Lebanese border use an SMS alert system provided by Israeli firm Cellact. The service sends SMS warnings of incoming missile attacks and other emergency alerts timely and even with heavy web traffic or poor reception.

Palestinian militants have been firing Kassam artillery rockets into southern Israel since 2000. The attacks have killed 22 Israeli to date.?The initial rockets can go a distance of 4.5 kilometres while the latest versions have a range of 20 kilometres.

Joseph Fusco sworn in as new mayor of Rome

Story Created: Dec 31, 2011 EST

Story Updated: Dec 31, 2011 at 5:02 PM EST

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Joseph Fusco became the city's 76th mayor Saturday afternoon shortly after noon. He was sworn in by Rome City Court Judge Dan Wilson.

Afterward, Fusco took time to thank the man he beat in November's election by just 81 votes, James Brown. Fusco said, "I would also like to thank Jim Brown and his administrative staff for eight years of public service and their strong committment to bettering our community. We acknowledge and appreciate your efforts. Thank you."

Several hundred people filled the historic Capitol Theatre, including Congressman Richard Hanna.

Hanna gave a brief statement on stage and told Fusco that it's a tough time to be a politician and said "this country has to learn to live within its means."

"So as the new year dawns, we must come together as a community and be ready, willing and able to make the necessary sacrifices and do whatever it takes to bring forth the change needed to create a brighter future for the city of Rome, both socially and economically," Fusco said.

Fusco said he asked that the seven members of Rome's City Council be sworn in on the same stage to show a sign of unity that all parties will work together for the betterment of Rome.

The very emotional day was topped off by the swearing in of Council member Anthony D'Arcangelo who is still recovering from a stroke a few months ago.
