European Space Agency working on using rocket fuel in cars

At first glance, hydrogen seems like a brilliant alternative fuel for motor cars. It burns so clean that all it produces is water, it?s the most abundant element in the universe and it doesn?t need all those rare earth elements and heavy metals that electric vehicles depend on. The only trouble is, it?s very difficult to handle. In an effort to make hydrogen cars practical, the European Space Agency (ESA) and Austrian automotive manufacturer MagnaSteyr are adapting technology developed for the Ariane rockets so that it can be used in cars, as part of ESA?s Technology Transfer Programme.

Hydrogen has a few problems as an alternative to petrol. It has a very low energy density, which means you need more of it to do the same job. Though it burns remarkably clean, most of what the world uses comes from fossil fuels, and there are currently only ten fueling stations worldwide. The two biggest problems, however, are that hydrogen molecules are so small that they can easily slip through seals, and the most efficient form of hydrogen is as cryogenic liquid. True, you can refuel a hydrogen car in minutes, but handling a fuel that's cooled to 33 degrees above absolute zero and won?t stay where it should is the definition of ?tricky.?

In 2006, BMW unveiled its hydrogen car, the Hydrogen 7. It was based on the 670 Li and could run either hydrogen or petrol in its untuned six-liter twelve-cylinder engine, that accelerated the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds. The hard part wasn't altering the engine. It was how to handle the 114 liters (30 gal) of liquid hydrogen.

This is where MagnaSteyr came in. MagnaSteyr was responsible for the systems used in ESA?s Ariane rockets, which burn liquid hydrogen. The company developed tightly-sealed fuel lines and double-walled storage tanks as well as the technology needed to feed fuel to the engine. The latter is particularly important because a tight curve in a pipe can heat fuel as it passes through, with disastrous results.

An Ariane rocket (Image: ESA/CNES/Arianespace/Optique Video du CSG)

?It?s a technical challenge to handle that correctly,? says Gerald Poellmann, the head of Magnasteyr?s Hydrogen Center of Competence. ?The tolerance areas are very small, the sealing needs to be tight, the materials can?t have any cracks, you need to prevent evaporation through the materials.?

This technology not only allowed BMW to adapt the engine to use hydrogen, but also to make a fuel tank that was small enough to fit in the boot, yet could store the fuel for up to two weeks.

The Hydrogen 7 (Image: BMW/Magna Steyr Aerospace)

After several million kilometers of driving, the strengths and limitations of the technology have become apparent, such as the tendency of the cryogenic fuel to boil away. The difficulty in handling the fuel also suggests that hydrogen fuel cells may be more practical, though liquid hydrogen would still need to be handled in any supply system.

Only 100 Hydrogen 7s were built and some are still used by BMW for shuttling VIPs, but many problems still remain. Still, the potential of a fuel medium that can be moved about and handled like natural gas, yet burns much cleaner, means that whether in an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell, hydrogen may make the practical jump from rockets to motor cars. ESA believes that its technology transfer policy will be part of this jump.

EA WorldView - Home - The Latest from Iran (8 November): Death of ...

Blogger Sattar Behesthi with his mother0740 GMT: Nuclear Watch. More support for talks with the US over the nuclear programme, and this time it comes from the Ministry of Intelligence....

In a lengthy report assessing an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, the Ministry says ignorance of the possibility of "imminent force" would be an "unforgivable sin". Instead, "one of the options is to take diplomatic and political measures and use the potentials of international bodies, which is a necessary and less costly option."

The report then asserts that President "hopes to solve this issue peacefully and through diplomacy", even as he pursues "severe sanctions", as he does not think Tehran's uranium enrichment is an imminent threat.

0650 GMT: The family of blogger Sattar Beheshti have expressed fears that he died from abuse after he was detained on accusations of?activism on Facebook.

Police seized Beheshti from his home in the Robat-Karim, southwest of Tehran, last week. Yesterday relatives said they had received phone calls from prison authorities asking them to collect his body.

Beheshti's sister told exiled journalist Masih Alinejad by phone: "Last Tuesday they raided into our house and took my brother with them....Today they called my husband and asked him to prepare me and my mother and buy a tomb for his dead body."

The Baztab website reported, "Sattar Beheshti, who was arrested by Fata [cyber] police, has died while being interrogated."?Saham News, close to detained opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi, said Beheshti had died "under torture" during a session with security officials. It also quoted a family member: "They called us today and asked us to collect his dead body tomorrow from Kahrizak."?

The detention centre at Kahrizak became infamous when protesters were abused there, with at least three dying, after the disputed 2009 Presidential elections.

Before his arrest, Beheshti wrote on his blog: "They threatened me yesterday that my mother would wear black because I don't shut my mouth."

Higher Taxes, Spending Cuts Weigh on Investors ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

Major U.S. stock indexes fell more than 2% Wednesday as investors decided to take profits in the face of possible tax increases and fiscal cliff concerns.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 313 points and finished the session below 13,000. Wednesday marked the Dow's largest daily decline in a year. The Dow was down 75 points to 12,856 in recent trading.

The S&P 500 Index (GSPC) had its worst performance on Wednesday since June, falling 2.4% to 1394.53.

Related: Markets Plummet After Obama Victory Puts 'Fiscal Cliff' in Focus

As The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task and Henry Blodget discuss in the attached video, part of the reason for Wednesday's selloff stemmed from the expected tax changes that will occur under President Obama's second term.

Rates on capital gains will likely be raised to 20% from 15% on individuals earning more than $250,000. A higher capital gains rate would theoretically make stocks less attractive to investors.

Related: Obama Wins 2012 Election: Why Your Taxes Are Going Up

Low capital gains tax rates are widely believed to encourage investment, create jobs and raise total tax revenue. The tax rate on capital gains has been lower than the rate for ordinary income for decades.

The higher capital gains theory was also explained for the dumping of Apple (AAPL) shares Wednesday. Apple stock slid nearly 4% on Wednesday to $558, twice as much as the broader stock market decline.

Related: Apple Still a Buy, But It's 'Michael Jordan Days' May Be Over: Josh Brown

Wednesday's selloff could also be viewed as a market correction. Earnings, though generally poor last quarter, are still at record highs and stocks are overvalued in relation to future earnings. The so-called fiscal cliff ? deep automatic federal spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to take effect in January ? has also been a top concern for traders and investors. House Speaker John Boehner extended an olive branch to President Obama Wednesday by saying Republicans would consider raising tax revenues as part of a deficit cutting deal.

Most economists as well as the Congressional Budget Office have warned that the fiscal cliff could tip the U.S. into recession if a compromise between the two political parties cannot be reached. Lawmakers have until the end of the year to resolve the fiscal drama. The markets will be watching.

Best Earbuds?

Best Earbuds? A few weeks back, we discussed the best headphones you can buy, this week we want to take the conversation right into your ears and discuss the best earbuds. Sometimes portability rules, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice noise isolation or audio quality just for the privilege of taking your music with you. So, which earbuds do you think are the best of breed?

We've covered how to pick great earbuds and headphones before, but this week we want to know which models you think are the right combination of bang for the buck, superior audio quality, portability, and longevity, even if you do have to pay for what you get. As with most hardware hives, if we get an overwhelming number of nominations for separate models, we'll collapse them into models, but we won't if we don't have to. Sound off in the discussions below!

Hive Five nominations take place in the discussions, where you post your favorite tool for the job. We get hundreds of nominations, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your comment like so: VOTE: BEST EARBUDS. Please don't include your vote in a reply to another person. Nominations emailed to us will not be counted. Instead, make your vote and reply separate discussions. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.

About the Hive Five: The Hive Five feature series asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get: "Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favorite tools to get the job done. Every weekend, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last week's five best desktop computer speakers.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Hm...screw it, I'll give it a go. I think I'll take an old character of mine from a similar RP and rework parts of him for this. I'll take one of the single males, please. I'll have a profile tomorrow at the latest.

EDIT: I'll wait till you have the rules and character sheet up before I start.

HBT: Rockies hire Weiss as manager

Waiting until late into the night Wednesday, the Rockies officially named Walt Weiss the sixth skipper in franchise history, succeeding Don Baylor, Buddy Bell, Clint Hurdle, Jim Leyland and Jim Tracy.

Tracy resigned shortly after the 2012 season.

Weiss, who played for the Rockies from 1994 through 1997, was chosen for the opening over active slugger Jason Giambi, bench coach Tom Runnells and Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams.

Weiss spent this past spring and summer serving as the head varsity baseball coach at Regis Jesuit High School in the Denver suburb of Aurora. He led the 2012 squad to Colorado?s 5A state semifinals.

It?s not a traditional hire, but those have become less common in recent years. Mike Matheny was named the Cardinals? manager last winter despite having no managerial experience at the MLB level. The same goes for Robin Ventura of the White Sox, a finalist for?Manager of the Year honors in the American League.

The Innovative Educator: 5 benefits of learning to play musical ...

5 benefits of learning to play musical instruments

Music lessons offer children many benefits including aiding mental, physical, emotional and social development. Does your child?s school support this? ?If not, you may want to share the following benefits of learning to play music. ?

  1. Boosting Brain Power - Taking lessons to learn to play an instrument significantly improves brain power. ?Research from the University of Kansas suggests that learning at a young age will have an impact on a child?s cognitive skills as they grow older.
  2. Improving Memory - Young people that learn to play a musical instrument have been shown in studies to have an improvement in behavior, memory and intelligence. Music lessons stimulate multiple patterns of brain development, which is what helps to increase memory.
  3. Social Skill Development - Learning to play an instrument helps young people develop the skills necessary to join a musical group, band, or ensemble where they learn to work with others and to appreciate the value of teamwork. This is a fun way to support their social development.
  4. Creating Confidence - Every time a young musician learns a new piece, plays well, or finishes a lesson, they are achieving an accomplishment that will raise their levels of confidence and self-esteem.
  5. Learning Patience - Learning to play an instrument is not easy. ?As a result, children learn how to deal with frustration, the rewards of being patient and the joy of working hard to achieve goals. This is an important step in their development as successful human beings.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 has YouTube livestreaming builtin on 360, PS3, and PC

Competitive multiplayer games, such as industry standard Call of Duty, are what make the world of e-sports a reality. And livestreaming of those games is the lifeblood of that community, primarily done through PCs and various online services (YouTube, Twitch.tv, etc.). Activision clearly knows this, as the next entry in its annual franchise, Black Ops 2, is adding YouTube livestreaming to its Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions -- the game is also headed to Wii U, but won't have the functionality built-in. "Wii U will not have this feature at this time, but it is being evaluated for a future update," an Activision rep told us.

The streaming service works in concert with Call of Duty Elite, allowing viewers and gamers alike to delve into all the thrilling numbers behind each online game. The game launches this coming Tuesday on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, with the Wii U version launching soon after alongside Nintendo's next console, sans streaming.
