Hurricane Sandy changes coastline in New Jersey

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? On October 29, 2012, lives were changed forever along the shores of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and in the two dozen United States affected by what meteorologists are calling Superstorm Sandy. The landscape of the East Coast was also changed, though no geologist would ever use the word "forever" when referring to the shape of a barrier island.

Two aerial photographs show a portion of the New Jersey coastal town of Mantoloking, just north of where Hurricane Sandy made landfall. Both photographs were taken by the Remote Sensing Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The after image on October 31, 2012; the before image was acquired by the same group on March 18, 2007. The images were acquired from an altitude of roughly 7,500 feet, using a Trimble Digital Sensor System.

The Mantoloking Bridge cost roughly $25 million when it was opened in 2005 to replace a bridge built in 1938. After Sandy passed through on October 29, 2012, the bridge was covered in water, sand, and debris from houses; county officials closed it because they considered it unstable.

On the barrier island, entire blocks of houses along Route 35 (also called Ocean Boulevard) were damaged or completely washed away by the storm surge and wind. Fires raged in the town from natural gas lines that had ruptured and ignited. A new inlet was cut across the island, connected the Atlantic Ocean and the Jones Tide Pond.

Barack Obama Reelection Signals Rise Of New America

NEW YORK -- President Barack Obama did not just win reelection tonight. His victory signaled the irreversible triumph of a new, 21st-century America: multiracial, multi-ethnic, global in outlook and moving beyond centuries of racial, sexual, marital and religious tradition.

Obama, the mixed-race son of Hawaii by way of Kansas, Indonesia, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, won reelection in good part because he not only embodied but spoke to that New America, as did the Democratic Party he leads. His victorious coalition spoke for and about him: a good share of the white vote (about 45 percent in Ohio, for example); 70 percent or so of the Latino vote across the country, according to experts; 96 percent of the African-American vote; and large proportions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The Republican Party, by contrast, has been reduced to a rump parliament of Caucasian traditionalism: white, married, church-going -- to oversimplify only slightly. "It's a catastrophe," said GOP strategist Steve Schmidt. "This is, this will have to be, the last time that the Republican Party tries to win this way."

The GOP chose as its standard-bearer Mitt Romney, whose own Mormon Church until recent decades discriminated officially against blacks. His campaign made little serious effort to reach out to Hispanics voters, and Romney hurt himself by taking far-right positions on immigration during the GOP primaries. He made no effort whatsoever in the black community.

Obama reached out not only racially and ethnically, but in terms of lifestyle. Analysts made fun of, and Republicans derided, his campaign's focus on discrete demographic and social slices of the electorate, including gays and lesbians. But the message was one about the future, not the American past.

U.S. Census numbers tell the story. In the first decade of the new millennium, the Asian-American population rose 43.3 percent, the African-American population 12.3 percent, the Latino community 43 percent -- and the white population just 5.7 percent.

To be sure, the president won because of his stand on the issues -- health care reform, Wall Street regulation, the auto industry bailout, among others. But his victory is something more: a sense that we are all in this together as a society, no matter who we are or how we live our lives.

I saw this new America at the heart of the Obama reelection effort, in their campaign offices. In one office in Virgina, for example, the local campaign manager was Pakistani-American, the volunteers were of every race and background, the people heading out to handle the signup drive were Hispanic, and the event they were working on was a concert by Bruce Springsteen.

Republicans Mike Grimm, Christopher Gibson, Chris Collins, Richard Hanna, Thomas Reed and Peter King and Democrats Steve Israel, Daniel Maffei, Paul Tonko, Brian Higgins, Louise Slaughter, Bill Owens, Nydia Velasquez, Sean Maloney, Nita Lowey, Hakeem Jeffries, Eliot Engel, Joe Crowley, Jose E. Republican Kansas state Senate candidate Steve Fitzgerald, who told a Kansas City group last month that Catholics could not be Democrats, appears to have defeated state Sen. Kelly Kultala (D). Returns on the secretary of state's website show Fitzgerald leading Kultala 52 percent to 48 percent.

Fitzgerald had told the Polish American Club that Catholics could not be Democrats, because the party platform did not mesh with Catholic teachings. Fitzgerald later told HuffPost that part of his message was for Catholics to help fix the Democratic Party to make it stronger.

The Kultala-Fitzgerald race was one of several competitive races where Democratic incumbent senators were targeted for defeat by conservatives. Kultala, the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 2010, faced a barrage of mailers tying her to President Barack Obama on such issues as the economy and health care reform.

Corfield lost to Assemblywoman Donna Simon (R-Readington) 51 percent to 49 percent. Simon was appointed to the seat following the November 2011 death of Assemblyman Pete Biondi (R), who beat Corfield last year. The election was for the remaining year on Biondi's term.

Corfield had gained last-minute support from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which had named her to its list of 60 targeted races. Corfield had finished first in a grassroots poll of activists nationally.

The 'Redskins Rule' has been right in almost every election since 1937, but it failed this week.

The rule held that if the NFL's Washington Redskins lose their last home game before a presidential election, then the incumbent party loses the White House. (It didn't hold in 2004, unless you consider the winner of the previous popular vote rather than the actual incumbent.)

The Redskins lost on Sunday, but President Barack Obama won reelection on Tuesday.

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder (R), who dropped a planned run for governor last year in the wake of a stripper scandal, has been reelected to a third term in the state's second-highest office. Kinder defeated former state Auditor Susan Montee (D) 53 percent to 42 percent.

Kinder, a former state senator, faced accusations that he had used state funds on hotel rooms in St. Louis, and that he invited a stripper he knew in the 1990s to share a St. Louis condo he rented. Kinder also faced a bizarre 2011 incident of his car being stolen after he left his keys in it and crashing into a gun shop before being torched.

Following Mitt Romney's projected defeat, an online activist group called "Dogs Against Romney" will morph into "Watchdog Causes." Instead of preaching the story of Seamus Romney, the Irish Setter Mitt Romney mistreated in 1983, the group will advocate progressive causes using the lessons it learned telling the world about how Romney strapped his dog's crate to the roof of a car for a 12-hour drive.

"Watchdog Causes, LLC seeks to help bring about positive social change by helping left-leaning activists, organizations, candidates and campaigns harness the enormous power of social media and interactive/online marketing," the group's website says.

The $20 ad campaign: small businesses find alternatives to Google ...

Gerald Gorman, who runs online businesses like Lawyer.com, pays Google $100,000 a month to place ads near search results and on Google?s partner sites. While the ads have proved effective at attracting customers, their growing price tag has led Gorman to look around for alternatives.

In the past, Gorman would have been out of luck. That?s because, despite the internet?s rapid growth, most small and medium businesses had few viable online ad options beyond Google or Bing.?This is changing, however, as upstart ad companies tap into new publishing tools and social media to offer effective online campaigns for as low as $20 a pop.

In Gorman?s case, he laid down $1000 on two such companies, Outbrain and Virurl, and was delighted with the results. While he pays as much as $10 for a customer to click on one of this Google ads, he found he paid 8 cents and 5 cents at the other sites and also earned a surge of traffics.

This may sound too good to be true but, for the growing number of businesses priced out of Google Adwords, ?it could be the real deal.

A new type of advertising: how it works

Instead of buying a search keyword like they do with Google Adwords, advertisers like Lawyer.com can pay Outbrain and Virurl to act as distributors for their messages. They supply the message in the form of a link to a piece of content ? a picture, a story or a video. Outbrain and Virurl then spray the link across the web via?third party publishers and on social media sites like Tumblr and Twitter.

Compared to Google Adwords, the upstart services are remarkable for their simplicity: Outbrain and Virurl provide a website for the advertiser to upload a content link, and to set a budget and duration for the ad campaign. While Outbrain has traditionally worked with publishers to augment and monetize their traffic, it?recently added an advertising tool called Amplify for small and medium businesses.? Here are screenshots of how the purchase process looks:

Here?s Outbrain:?

Here?s Virurl:?

The advertiser can use a credit card to get the campaign up and running almost immediately compared to the 5 days that Gorman says it takes for Google to approve content (the delay is important for brands that want to jump on time-sensitive ad opportunities like Big Bird). As for the money, the advertiser?s allocated budget is depleted every time someone clicks on the link; some of the money goes to the publisher who hosts the ad and the rest goes to the distributors ? in Gorman?s case, to Outbrain or Virurl. The distributors also share real-time analytics that let the advertiser monitor the campaign.

To be clear, the two would-be Adwords-competitors have different business models. Outbrain is bigger and works primarily with major publishers, including premium ones like CNN and Time, to find augment traffic or to find spots for ad-driven content.?Virurl, on the other hand, is aimed at getting ad content to go viral on social networks like Twitter where ?influencers? retweet the links and are paid for clicks. But, from a small business perspective, the underlying strategy is the same: find ad content that people want to see and pay to distribute it.

Gorman notes that the young ad companies? geographic targeting isn?t as good as Google (?you can target down to the lamp post with Google AdWords?) but that they do permit users to choose between US and oversees viewers. He also says they have been forthcoming about fraudulent clicks and will refund money for suspicious traffic.

What it means for businesses: a scramble for quality content

The advent of cheap, easily managed ad campaigns is good news for companies like Lawyer.com.?But there is, of course, a catch. To sign up for these distribution networks, a company can?t just show up with 20 bucks ? it also needs to have a piece of content that people want to see.

?We spend a lot on screening. We?re pretty fanatical about taking on only quality,? said Outbrain CEO Yaron Galai by phone, explaining that the company rejects half of all would-be clients. He added that advertisers like GE are producing ?wonderful content? such as a video interview with the inventor of the LED. Media companies looking to acquire more traffic to meet ad needs are also logical customers for Outbrain.

In the case of Lawyer.com, Gorman said the site produces quality original content that suits Outbrain.?But what about other small companies? Galai said small, non-media companies are unlikely to have the capacity to produce quality content and their best bet is to use ?earned media? like reviews or press mentions. If they are ambitious, they could of course still try to make Outbrain?s quality cut; a bakery might, for instance, start a cupcake or recipe blog.

Virurl, which was featured at a?Paley Media Center?s ?Next Big Thing? event, is less finicky about the content it sends out. But the social advertising start-up likewise uses a quality control process to weed out junky ads.

?A human in our Santa Monica office, views the content and either approves or rejects it. We will never drive anyone to a product page or anything that is spammy or a clear ad ? The underlying philosophy is that ? If the advertiser put enough thought into tapping into human emotion it will likely be approved,? wrote CEO Francisco Diaz-Mitoma in an email message.

The bottom line is that the new ad distributors offer small businesses a low-cost way to get their brands before huge numbers of potential customers ? provided they have the ingenuity to make or earn quality content. The people who see the ad content may not have the same ?intent-level? as those who click on Google search ads but, for now, the price advantage mean companies like Outbrain and Virurl could one day emerge as viable competitors to Google.
