iPad mini ?has same 32nm A5 processor as iPad 2, 5G iPod touch?

News

The iPad mini features the same 32nm A5 processor as the 5th-gen iPod touch and iPad 2, teardown analysis confirms.

Apple?s new iPad mini 7.9in tablet features an essentially identical processor to the iPad 2 update in May, one based again on the 32nm Samsung process, it has been confirmed by a chip analysis firm.

Prior to today?s iPad mini launch, there had been speculation that Apple would once again update the process for its A5 chip, just as it did when launching the A5X for the third-gen iPad earlier this year. (At the same time as noisily launching the 32nm A5X, Apple quietly updated the process for the A5 chips in the iPad 2 and 5th-gen iPod touch.)

A new process or even a new foundry partner seemed particularly likely since the A5 chip was now appearing in an entirely new product line.

But instead, Chipworks reports that iFixit?s teardown research found no changes. The package markings were identical, and cross-section analysis indicated no changes to the gate pitch and metal gates and confirming that the foundry partner was again Samsung (check the Chipworks link for better explanation of the technicalities).

?The foundry for the A5 is confirmed to be Samsung. Basically, we put our device in for a cross section and the images show the same contacted gate pitch and the same high-k metal gates, so we are comfortable with this conclusion,? Chipworks said.

Election 2012: No Rest In Final Campaign Hours For Barack Obama, Mitt Romney (VIDEO)

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The White House the prize, President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney raced through a final full day of campaigning on Monday through Ohio and other battleground states holding the keys to victory in a tight race. Both promised brighter days ahead for a nation still struggling with a sluggish economy and high joblessness.

"I've come back to Iowa one more time to ask for your vote," Obama told 20,000 supporters at an outdoor rally in Des Moines, the last of his campaign. "This is where our movement for change began."

A single tear ran down Obama's face as he spoke. Whether it was the product of emotion or the bitter cold was hard to tell.

In a final rally of his own Monday night, Romney told supporters in New Hampshire ? he won the state's first-in-the-nation primary ? that he needs their votes again.

"It's all your votes and your work right here in New Hampshire that will help me become the next president of the United States," Romney told a capacity crowd at the 10,000-seat Verizon Wireless Arena. "We thank you and we ask you to stay in it all the way to the victory tomorrow night."

With many of the late polls in key states tilting slightly against him, Romney decided to campaign on Election Day in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where he and Republicans made a big, late push.

The presidency aside, there are 33 Senate seats on the ballot Tuesday, and according to one Republican official, a growing sense of resignation among his party's rank and file that Democrats will hold their majority.

The situation was reversed in the House, where Democrats made no claims they were on the verge of victory in pursuit of the 25 seats they need to gain control.

National opinion polls in the presidential race made the popular vote a virtual tie.

Fitting for a tight election, voters in tiny Dixville Notch, N.H., split over the candidates, Obama and Romney receiving five votes each when balloting took place at midnight. In nearby Hart's Location, the hamlet that shares the honor of casting the nation's first presidential ballots, Obama won with 23 votes, Romney received nine and Libertarian Gary Johnson received one.

In state-by-state surveys, it appeared Obama held small advantages in Nevada, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin ? enough to deliver a second term if they endured, but not so significant that they could withstand an Election Day surge by Romney supporters. Both men appealed to an ever smaller universe of undecided voters.

More than 30 million absentee or early ballots have been cast, including in excess of 3 million in Florida. The state also had a legal controversy, in the form of a Democratic lawsuit seeking an extension of time for pre-Election Day voting.

There were other concerns, logistical rather than legal.

Officials in one part of New Jersey delivered voting equipment to emergency shelters so voters displaced by Superstorm Sandy last week could cast ballots. New York City made arrangements for shuttle buses to provide transportation for some in hard-hit areas unable to reach their polling places.

Judging from the long early voting lines in some places and the comments made in others, the voters were more than ready to have their say.

"I watch the news all the time, and I am ready for it to be over," said Jennifer Walker, 38, of Columbus, Ohio, who said she took time off from work to attend the president's speech during the day in a show of support. "I feel like he is getting better with the economy. I don't think it's hopeless. It takes time."

But Bryan Dobes, 21, a University of Iowa student from suburban Chicago, voted for Romney on Monday and said unemployment and spending have been too high under Obama. "He promised a lot of hope and change, and I'm not seeing it," he said of the president.

"No retreat, no surrender," sang rock icon Bruce Springsteen, warming up Obama's crowd on a frosty morning outside the State Capitol in Madison, Wis. The Boss then boarded Air Force One for his first flight. "Pretty cool," he judged it.

Romney had Kid Rock and the Marshall Tucker Band in the wings for his late appearances in Ohio and New Hampshire.

"This is it," the challenger said in a last-minute emailed request for campaign donations.

"I will lead us out of this economic crisis by implementing pro-growth policies that will create 12 million new jobs. With your help, I will deliver real change and a real recovery. America will be strong again."

In his longest campaign day, Romney raced from Florida to a pair of speeches in Virginia to Ohio and then an election eve rally in New Hampshire.

Obama selected Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa for his final campaign day, an itinerary that reflected his campaign's decision to try and erect a Midwestern firewall against Romney's challenge.

Vice President Joe Biden and Republican running mate Paul Ryan of Wisconsin went through their final campaign paces, as well.

In Sterling, Va., not far from Washington, the vice president accused Republicans of running away from their record, but added, "a leopard can't change his spots."

Ryan started out in Reno, Nev., where he said the president has come up short in his promises to change Washington and repair the economy.

"This may be the best that Barack Obama can offer, but this is not the best America can," he said, before flying off to Colorado and Ohio. Then it was home to Wisconsin, where he is on the ballot for re-election to Congress in case Republicans were unsuccessful in the presidential campaign.

Conscientious to the end, supporters kept knocking on doors in search of a possibly decisive vote.

In Enfield, N.H., Obama volunteer Sarah Ayres recalled driving up a deserted dirt road, unsure if she would find the house she was looking for. She turned down a long driveway, she said, got out of her car, and was met by a friendly, white goat.

"There were no people home, but the goat was there, so I don't know if I should count that as a contact," she joked.

World stocks fall ahead of tight US election

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets fell Monday as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of a looming leadership change in China and uncertainty about the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.

The race between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney is virtually tied one day ahead of the election, generating an atmosphere of uncertainty that markets normally dislike.

Investors could awaken Wednesday without a clear winner. If the election comes down to a thin margin in a swing state such as Ohio, the outcome could be delayed for days or weeks.

"The worst case scenario for markets is for a prolonged period of uncertainty if the results produce no clear cut result," said analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.

European stocks fell in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 lost 0.5 percent to 5,840.39. Germany's DAX lost 0.5 percent to 7,323.80. France's CAC-40 dropped 0.6 percent to 3,470.10.

But there was less discomfort among U.S. investors ahead of the opening bell. Dow Jones industrial futures rose 0.1 percent to 13,005 while S&P 500 futures rose marginally to 1,406.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.5 percent to close at 9,007.44. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.5 percent to 22,006.40. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.6 percent to 1,908.22. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Indonesia and Singapore also fell. Benchmarks in Thailand, the Philippines and Australia rose.

Mainland Chinese shares lost ground after four straight days of gains. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.1 percent to 2,114.03 and the Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.5 percent to 858.60.

"The losses were a technical correction due to profit-taking after the recent gains" said Zhang Yang, an analyst at Sinolink Securities in Shanghai.

A key political event also takes place this week in China, the world's No. 2 economy. Thursday marks the opening of the Communist Party congress ? the once-in-a-decade forum used to name China's top leadership.

Tom Kaan, head of equity sales at Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong, said it would be a "cause of concern" if China's new leaders do not take quick action to boost employment, particularly among the ranks of middle-income earners who have lost jobs amid the country's economic slowdown.

"Unemployment is one of the biggest concerns which nobody seems to be focusing on," he said. Investors are also hoping to see progress in the deregulation of China's financial markets.

Meanwhile, shares of South Korea's two largest carmakers plunged after the companies acknowledged overstating gas mileage on hundreds of thousands of cars sold in the U.S. Hyundai Motor Co., the country's largest carmaker, plummeted 7.2 percent and second-largest Kia Motors Corp. sank 6.9 percent.

The inflated mileage was uncovered in an audit of test results by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA's inquiry into the overstated figures is continuing.

Toyota Motor Corp. rose 2.2 percent after the carmaker reported it had tripled its profit in the fiscal second quarter and raised its full-year earnings forecast.

Japanese electronics firms continued to take hits. Sharp Corp. dropped 6.7 percent. Panasonic Corp. fell 5.6 percent. Fujitsu Ltd. lost 3.7 percent.

Benchmark oil for December delivery was up 2 cents to $84.88 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.23, or 2.2 percent, to close Friday in New York at $84.86 a barrel, its lowest level since July 10.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2784 from $1.2829 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 80.28 yen from 80.42 yen.

21-Year-Old Man Busted for Allegedly Forging Documents & Lying About His Age?To Play High School Football

A 21-year-old Michigan man has been busted for allegedly forging documents and lying about his age in order to play high school football.

According to the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun, James Nash moved from Lansing and enrolled at Mount Pleasant High School under the name Javier Jones. He played varsity football for the first two months of the year and was planning to play basketball in the winter.

The school?s athletic director, Jim Conway, said he received an anonymous tip from a parent to check ?Jones? out.

?I received an anonymous tip from a parent, it was an adult that had a conscience, that said you better check this,? Conway told the Morning Sun Friday. ?Earlier this week we dug up his file, the police became involved (and) all the school officials, and found documents had been altered and forged. There was a couple days of investigation, looking into that and what we have found is this individual is not the individual that was on the transcript.?

State rules say a student is not eligible to play sports if they are 19 before Sept. 1. Conway said Nash has been expelled from the school district.

Football coach Jason McIntyre said Nash was a defensive back but not any kind of star player. USA Today noted that Mount Pleasant went 2-2 in the games Nash played.

Conway said the Michigan High School Athletic Association had called it ?unprecedented? for someone to change their age from older to younger in order to play.

A decision has not been made on whether the school will have to forfeit its two wins with Nash.
