PPP: Obama Weathers Post-Debate Fallout, Leads Ohio By 5

Although President Barack Obama has seen solid leads evaporate in the last week, a poll released Saturday night suggests that Ohio may continue to serve as a firewall for his campaign.

The latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows Obama leading Mitt Romney among likely Ohio voters, 51 percent to 46 percent. That's little change from PPP's pre-debate poll of Ohio two weeks ago, which showed Obama up 4.

The PollTracker Average currently shows Obama holding a small lead over Romney in Ohio, 47.5 percent to 45.2 percent.

Obama has outperformed Romney in Ohio throughout this campaign. By the end of September it looked like the president was poised to walk away with the Buckeye State's 18 electoral votes. But a successful outing in the first presidential debate breathed new life into Romney's campaign, and the Republican nominee has subsequently either narrowed or erased Obama's leads both nationwide and in swing states.

Saturday's poll offered plenty of explanations for Obama's durability in Ohio. For one, the president's resilience there could be a testament to his robust field operation. By a roughly 3-to-1 ratio, the Obama team claims more campaign offices statewide than Romney. The fruits of Obama's ground game may be discernible in the poll: among the nearly 20 percent of Ohioans who said that they have already voted, 76 percent of them cast their ballots for the president. Romney, on the other hand, leads Obama among those who have not voted yet, 51 percent to 45 percent.

What's more, PPP's findings underscore what's been so paramount to the president's standing both in Ohio and in neighboring states. Fifty-four percent of Ohio voters said they support the bailout of the U.S. automotive industry, long a significant source of support for Obama throughout the Rust Belt, while 37 percent said they remain opposed. On the question of which candidate would be better for the auto industry, 50 percent of Ohio voters gave the nod to Obama compared with 43 percent who said Romney. And a majority of Ohio voters, 51 percent, said they trust Obama more on the economy, while 46 percent said they preferred Romney.

Obama's approval rating has improved since PPP's Ohio poll in late-September, which showed a narrow plurality of the state's voters disapproving of his job as president. In Saturday's poll, 50 percent of Ohio voters said they approve of Obama's job performance, while 48 percent said they disapprove. Romney's own personal standing has gotten slightly worse: 51 percent of voters there have an unfavorable view of the former Massachusetts governor, up from 49 percent in September.

While Romney's surge in many polls this week showed a narrowing of the gender gap, PPP's latest survey found Obama widening his lead among Ohio women. The president leads by 12 among female voters in the state, a big bump from his slim 2-point edge late last month.

PPP did not survey Ohio last weekend, so it is unclear what immediate damage Obama incurred there for his flat performance in the Oct. 3 presidential debate. But it's possible the president was at least partly redeemed by his running mate: 46 percent of Ohio voters said Vice President Joe Biden was the winner of Thursday night's vice presidential debate, while 37 percent gave the edge to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).

PPP conducted its survey Oct. 12-13 using automated interviews with 880 likely Ohio voters. The poll has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

Attractive Business Model for Customer Innovation: Peers Inc ...

In September 2012, at the Business Innovation Factory annual confab, BIF-8, I had the opportunity to hear Robin Chase RobinChasetell her story. She talked a little about what she learned from co-founding Zipcar, and a lot about how she wanted to push the envelope with her newest company, Buzzcar.

Robin conveys infectious enthusiasm, not just about car-sharing and environmental sustainability and making our cities livable communities. She?s also enthusiastic about a ?new? business model which she has studied and adopted. She calls it ?Peers Inc.? short for Peers-to-Peers, Incorporated. I really like the way that Robin has ?unpacked? a business model that has become very popular in the past decade. Her main point is this: if you want to grow a sustainable business really fast, you should COMBINE a peer-to-peer network with a company. The company does what companies do best: It provides economies of scale, it invests in long-term assets and intellectual property, it mitigates risk, it provides recourse, and it wraps that all in a brand promise. However the company doesn?t provide the products. The products and services are provided by the customers. That means they can be highly customized, specialized, localized, and diverse. Customers use their own social networks to promote their wares and to attract other buyers and sellers.

Robin exhorted her audience to consider using a Peers, Inc. model not only to grow businesses, but also to solve big complex problems (like climate change). As she says, a Peers Inc. organization ?delivers the speed of collective action while preserving the ingenuity and creativity of individuals. It?s a fabulous partnership. The internet has empowered people. Peers, Inc., takes it up a level with the power of companies.?

Here's the case study I wrote after hearing Robin's talk at BIF-8:

Canada beats undermanned Cuba in qualifying

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:17 p.m. ET Oct. 12, 2012

TORONTO (AP) -Despite squandering numerous chances, Canada beat undermanned Cuba 3-0 Friday night to remain on course in World Cup qualifying.

The Cubans (0-5-0) dressed just 11 players for the game. Down the field, Canada (3-1-1) had 10 substitutes dressed.

And Cuba was down to 10 in the 70th minute after striker Roberto Linares was ejected off a challenge that crumpled captain Kevin McKenna.

Three minutes later, Canadian striker Olivier Occean was sent off for a melee after Will Johnson's header made it 2-0. That means Occean will have to miss Canada's final match against Honduras, which will decide whether the Canadians advance to the CONCACAF finals.

Tosaint Ricketts scored for Canada in the 14th minute. And until Johnson's goal padded the lead with just 20 minutes remaining, the Cubans were one kick away from evening the score and silencing the enthusiastic crowd of 17,712 at BMO Field.

David Edgar made it 3-0 in the 78th minute with a sweet volley - a score that could come in useful with goal difference a tiebreaker.

Now a showdown awaits against Honduras in San Pedro Sula on Tuesday.

The top two in the group that also includes Panama advance to the final six-team round of qualifying.

From there, three will advance to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. A fourth CONCACAF team will take part in an intercontinental playoff with the Oceania winner to see who joins them.

Catalogs making a comeback among retailers

Halfdark / Getty Images/fStop

More than 12.5 billion catalogs were sent out last year, and almost 30 percent of American consumers bought something from them ? a boon to both the postal service and retailers.

By Katie Little, CNBC.com

Before e-commerce grew into retail?s top buzz word and changed the way consumers shop and brands advertise, there was the catalog.?

Sears' catalog, the predecessor of today?s glossy publications, featured numerous household items (even the kitchen sink!) and was a hit among consumers for decades until it was discontinued in favor of a smaller version in the early 1990s.?

As the Internet went mainstream, businesses began to shy away from issuing such bulky catalogs due to concerns about production costs and the environment. Instead, retailers increasingly turned to where the customers where ? online.?

Today, though, catalogs appear to be enjoying a resurgence as brands ranging from J.Crew to Restoration Hardware to Victoria?s Secret rely on the books to drum up business and market their brands.?

In recent years, Kathy Grannis, the National Retail Federation?s senior director of media relations, has seen a ?reinvention of the catalog? as more people, particularly Millennials and those earning more than $50,000, say they plan to use the publications to shop.?

?The number, seven years ago, 10 years ago was relatively low,? Grannis said. ?In recent years, we have found that more people seem to be interested in using catalogs as a channel to shop.??

Last year, more than 12.5 billion catalogs were sent out to U.S. homes, according to Direct Marketing Association data. About 29 percent of Americans purchased something from a catalog in 2011.

Still, catalogs do not work for all retailers, she said.?

Among retailers that have found success issuing them, some use them to promote specific products that may not be highlighted online or in stores, she added.?

Others, such as home furnishings retailer Restoration Hardware, use the medium to stretch their impact of their limited store footprint.?

The company?s recent 992-page catalog ? bigger than Vogue?s September issue ? sparked numerous Tweets (and phone books comparisons).?

?My postman is wearing a truss. I guess the Restoration Hardware catalogue is out?? @stevebluestein wrote.?

Another, @jgalep, opined, ?What?s with the gigantic Restoration Hardware mailers? I don?t need a phonebook sized catalog. I have the internet.??

But Internet shopping via tablet computers could be contributing to the increase in catalog popularity as consumers become used to flipping through them digitally again, Grannis said.?

?A lot of companies today have digital versions of their catalogs that customers can get through Google catalogs,? she said. ?And at any given time, you can see 200 catalogs.??

As retailers? plans for the holiday season get into full swing, Grannis cited another seasonal rationale for the catalog. (Read more: The ?Fiscal Cliff??the Grinch That Steals Christmas?)

?Especially during the holiday season, when it?s a little bit harder to cut through the clutter, it makes sense to beef up the product assortment that they put in the catalog,? Grannis said.?

Do Not Be Afraid Of The Competition In Sports

Many athletes sometimes get anxious when they going against a tough opponent. They get nervous on who they are competing with and they get so worked up that they lose focus on playing their sport. In the end, they make mistakes and end up beating themselves up if they do not win. As a result, here is a list of techniques that an athlete can use to help manage the stress of going against the competition.

The first step is to learn as much as you can on your opponent. Although this may seem obvious, some athletes may think they already know what they need to know. Remember there is always something to learn about your competition. Read the reports about your opponent and watch him or her performance. Try to figure out an angle on how you can beat your competition. The more you know about your competition the better your chances are you will win. This will also help to reduce your worries in the future.

Do not assume anything about your competition whether they are stronger or weaker than you. Every athlete has his good and bad times and just because you may be facing a stronger opponent does not mean that you will lose. Remember that you and your opponent both have an equal chance of winning. You are both starting from scratch. This should help you to give you confidence going into your next event.

Focus on how you can best strive for perfection in your own event instead of worrying about your opponent. For instance, you are going against the number one athlete in the tournament and you are nervous. Instead of focusing on how good your competition is, focus on your performance. Concentrate on how you can perform your event and how you can best improve on your problem areas.

Realize that you can't win all of the time and that also includes your competition. You may be the best athlete in the world, however you will still sometimes lose. No one can win all of the time. When facing a tough competitor, use this fact to your advantage. Even the best athletes will make some mistakes.

It is not uncommon to get nervous when you go against a better opponent. All you can do is to focus on your skill sets and do the best you can. This will help you in the long run.

KALAUPAPA, Hawaii (RNS) At 81, Barbara Marks is among the last 17 leprosy patients Hawaii banished to the remote peninsula of Kalaupapa. Over more than 100 years, beginning in 1866, more than 8,000 were separated from their families and taken to this distant point on Molokai, where Mother Marianne Cope ministered to the settlement.

With the Oct. 21 canonization of Cope at the Vatican, and their numbers dwindling, the remaining patients are eager to make sure their stories are recorded and their home preserved.

?I?ve heard people say it would be a nice resort,? Marks said. ?I don?t want them to do that to Kalaupapa. I don?t want it to change. It?s our home.?

Patients such as Marks describe doctors taking ?snips? of their skin to test for leprosy, being poked and prodded and stared at as if they were ?a monkey show.? They recall burying spouses, having babies taken away and spending family visits with a chain-link fence separating them from their relatives.

Still, many spoke with affection for the place they call home and their connection to the Hawaiian history that created two Roman Catholic saints: Father Damien and now Mother Marianne.

?I had a lot of sadness, but my life was not all bad,? Marks said.

Their stories date to 1865, when Hawaii?s King Kamehameha V implemented a policy of forced exile by approving the Act to Prevent the Spread of Leprosy.

Kalaupapa was chosen as the site of what became the world?s first leper colony because of its location. Cliffs as high as 2,000 feet cut the settlement off from the rest of Molokai, which is approximately in the center of Hawaii?s eight islands.

Today, the small village is a quiet, pristine retreat seemingly untouched by modern life. Black lava boulders hug the shores, and the waves are a constant, rhythmic backdrop. Visitors require permission; access is a rocky journey down a 1,700-foot mountainside by foot or mule, or by nine-seat plane.

The first exiles ? 12 patients, one stowaway child and several kokuas (family members acting as helpers or caregivers) ? were taken to Kalaupapa by boat on Jan. 6, 1866. By 1873, when Father Damien began working on Kalaupapa, about 600 patients had been shipped there. In 1890, two years after Cope and several other Franciscan sisters from Syracuse, N.Y., began their ministry, the patient population reached a high of about 1,200.

In the early years, survival was rare. Ten of the first 12 patients died within two years.

By the 1940s, medication had been developed that prevented the transmission of leprosy, now called Hansen?s disease. Few patients were forced to Kalaupapa after 1949, and Hawaii formally lifted the quarantine in 1969. Patients were free to leave. But many chose to stay: Kalaupapa had become home, and other patients were family.

In 2005, when the remains of Cope were exhumed as part of the Roman Catholic Church?s canonization process, 37 patients remained on the settlement?s rolls; 28 still called Kalaupapa their permanent home.

Nine leprosy patients sent to Kalaupapa will take a pilgrimage to Rome for Cope?s canonization later this month.

Sister Francis Therese Souza, 69, has worked as a nurse on Kalaupapa since 1989, when 99 patients lived there. She is one of about 61 Franciscan sisters who have ministered there since 1888. Three sisters live there now, Souza and two who serve as volunteers with the National Park Service.

?It?s a little harder each time one of them dies,? Souza said.

Gadoua / The Post-Standard

Every day, she remembers her connection to the Franciscan sisters who traveled 5,000 miles into the unknown to dispense medicine and compassion. She?s conscious she may be the last Franciscan to do so.

?I might be the one to close the door for Mother Marianne,? she said.

Sister Theresa Chow, one of two Franciscans living at the settlement?s St. Elizabeth Convent, learned when she moved to Kalaupapa that she is related to a patient. Honolulu Bishop Larry Silva learned about 15 years ago that his great-grandfather and a great aunt died at Kalaupapa.

To Clarence ?Boogie? Kahilihwa, who went there in 1959, ?it was like a prison.? Two sisters and a brother had been sent to Kalaupapa ahead of him, he said.

?We were mostly programmed. They made me feel dirty. ?Go here, don?t go there, don?t touch that.? You could not get close. They were strict. Maybe some were scared. Maybe they were ignorant. A couple of times I said to myself, ?Why did I become a patient? Maybe I did something bad and was punished.??

After being treated at a hospital, he chose to move to Kalaupapa. ?Old people said, ?Why you shut your life away from society??? he recalled. ?For me it was better. I had a brother and sisters there.?

His wife, Ivy, recalls an aunt leaving home and never returning. When she developed spots on her face and hands, ?I did not know what it was. They told me I had to be separated. No one told me what it was.?

For Gloria Marks, who came in 1960, Kalaupapa meant marriage ? in 1962, to fellow patient Richard Marks ? and a family. They had two sons, who were raised by her parents because health officials worried the children would contract leprosy. Barbara Marks also had a child, Edward Kaito Damien Marks, who also was raised by her mother.

?I didn?t want to hold him,? she said matter-of-factly. ?I didn?t want him to end up like me. There was nothing I could do. I had to be strong.?

In 2008, Hawaii acknowledged such situations when the state legislature passed a resolution apologizing to former leprosy patients for the policy of exile. The Hawaii Department of Health is committed to caring for patients, providing housing, medical care, meals and modest stipends.

In 1976, Kalaupapa was designated a National Historic Landmark and, in 1980, Kalaupapa National Historical Park was created. As long as patients remain, the state of Hawaii and the National Park Service will continue to provide services and protect their dignity and privacy, said Stephen Prokop, Kalaupapa park superintendent. The park service is working on a long-term plan that will include preservation, education and interpretation of the site. There will be no recreational use, and no sea access is planned.

?It?s not a traditional place to come and swim and surf,? Prokop said. ?It?s a sacred place and we want to respect that.?

Global Leadership Conference 2012: Insights and Takeaways ...

Some fascinating insights at the Global Leadership Conference at the Ronald Reagan Building today from corporate and diplomatic leaders, Jay Johnson, Chairman and CEO of General Dynamics, Frederick Smith, the CEO of FedEX, Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup, David Rubinstein of the Carlyle Group, the Ambassador of India Her Excellency, Nirupama Rao, and His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates. The Summit was sponsored by the Meridian International Center in partnership with Gallup and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

The takeaway: The world will not remain the same as it has been. According to General Dynamics CEO Jay Johnson , in coming decades, change will be the only constant and the United States cannot afford to be isolated if it wants to remain a major player on the world stage but must continue to collaborate with other countries in order to remain competitive in a globalized world threatened by pandemics, terrorism and climate change. Leadership, said the former naval commander, must be based on achieving positive outcomes, not war. Instead of individual navies patrolling the seas, Johnson, himself an Admiral, forsees a network of maritime partners around the world which would collaborate to achieve maritime security.

Gallup, no longer simply conducts polls to determine the winners of US elections, but now has 40 offices worldwide which work to predict the rise and fall of leaders and countries. Said Jim Clifton, Gallup CEO, World trade is now at $60 Trillion but according to economists, will rise to $140 trillion in the next three decades. Which countries will rise? Follow the money. The answer as to which countries will succeed he says, is where the $140 trillion goes. Gallup finds that the most important predictor of economic success or failure of a nation/state is the state of mind and the will of their populations. The best way to predict a rise or loss of GDP and who will rise and fall in the future is hope, whether a country is struggling and crashing, or hopeful and thriving. Tunisia?s GDP, for example may be up 5-6% but the Tunisians? sense of ?thriving? is crashing. Clifton said leaders will rise or fall based on their understanding of the wills of their people. For example, Rwanda may not be the safest place on earth, but Rwandans? state of mind is that it is safe. Why? ?Because it?s better than it used to be. ? In Ethiopia women used to worry about walking to market out of fear of being raped, but since the authorities established law and order, women feel safe, can go to market and GDP has risen. What used to drive the American dream has also changed Clifton said. For almost the last century the American Dream has been based on peace and having a good roof over one?s head. Now he says the American Dream is based on having a ?good job.? All decisions people now make is based on jobs.

What the entire global population, not just the US population, wants right now, said Clifton, is job growth, food and shelter and law and order. The global population is now at 7 billion adults. Three billion of them want good jobs. They don?t want ?informal jobs,? but rather full time 30 hr/week jobs. But there are only 2 billion real jobs in the world, so more jobs need to be created.
