Fujitsu Arrows Tab shows up at CEATEC with Windows 8 in tow

We got a look at Fujitsu's Arrows Tab at CEATEC last year, and the 10.1-inch tablet is making an appearance yet again -- this time running Windows 8 rather than Android Honeycomb. Exact specs were MIA, but the slate sports a front-facing camera along with a rear-facing shooter, plus a micro-USB port and a microSD card slot. Rather than the shiny plastic backing we saw last year, this device has a slightly textured, metallic finish, and it sports much sharper corners than the earlier version's more curved design.

A booth worker did confirm that the Arrows Tab is waterproof like last year's model, and while he wouldn't provide exact availability, he said the tablet will launch within the October-November time frame. Last year's Arrows Tab F-01 LTE debuted on NTT DoCoMo, and given Japan's penchant for hydrophobic gadgets, it's safe to say that the device will be targeted at this country in particular. Head past the break for a quick video hands-on.

Comments - Annapolis, Maryland Wills, Trusts & Estate Planning ...

The old adage ?nothing is certain but death and taxes? is very true. Since income taxes occur on an annual basis we think about them frequently. Our own death, however, we seldom think about or plan for. That?s a problem.

Admittedly, it?s fairly difficult to plan for death and taxes at your passing. However, if I could delay only one of them, it would be death.

Anyone who has stuck by their family during the passing of a loved one knows just how powerful the ensuing emotional (and financial) tsunami can be. There are many decisions that must be made during a time of grief. This fact of life was recently addressed in a Forbes article titled ?Are You Ready For Both Death And Taxes??

Death taxes aside, death itself presents choices that must be made. You, and you alone, are in the best position to make proper estate plans to preserve and protect your assets and your family at your passing.

The original article presents a good, better, and best approach. However, what is the best approach? In the end, you know your assets and loved ones better than anyone else.

Doesn?t it make sense for you to make proper plans now, rather than later?

Simple Tips Your Own Home Improvement Projects | Home ...

Whether you?re trying to increase your home?s value or simply beautify the place a tiny bit via a few needed improvements, you should know that there?s a lot more that can go wrong than can go right. that is the nature of home improvement. You need real skills to be an actual carpenter. Even the regular handyman can use some advice from time to time. These tips, then, can be very important.

Make sure to wage sufficient lighting when designing your new or updated bathroom. Sometimes people concentrate on bathroom fixtures during a remodel, and they tend to overlook the importance of proper lighting. Put lights around your medicine cabinets and mirrors, or place in ceiling lights with easily replaceable bulbs.

It is inevitable that chair cushions will flatten with use. To restore them, place the cushions outside in the sun. Sunlight dries up excess moisture and restores the springiness. Be sure to flip over the cushions, and don?t just leave them out in the sun because the colors can fade.

When you can stay at home as you make changes, you?ll save money. You can begin by doing a single room at once. This will keep things bearable, as long as you have more than one bathroom. If this applies to you, stay with your friends in the meantime.

Do you want to do some home improvements that are cheap and will still increase the value of your home. Form some rock walls to increase visual appeal. The rocks aren?t pricey at all, as you can find them yourself for free! Once you have your rocks, you can create your own design or use one of the ready prefabricated designs you can easily find online.

When it comes to home improvements, make sure you realize just how long some things last. For example, a new stone or brick chimney can wage 100 years or more of use. However, a deck prefabricated of wood might last only 15 years. Vinyl floors will last twenty or more years but oak lasts around a 100. Think about all of these things as you plan a renovation, to determine if the money and energy you place out is worthwhile.

Protect your carpeting by keeping your drapes shut on very sunny days. The sun?s rays can actually lighten your carpet and cause hideous fading. Open your drapes whenever the sun isn?t directly in the line of site.

When you seek out expert advice, your home renovations will be more profitable. They will know the areas of improvement that will increase profit the most and give you recommendations on what should be changed.

When replacing a floor, think about using vinyl to save money. Vinyl is durable, strong, and water resistant, and comes with an adhesive backing that makes installation a breeze. Vinyl is acquirable in many sizes and materials, so it is simple to buy just enough for a small or massive area.

A home improvement project does not have to be hard to do. It might even be easier than you thought. But you can do a lot of harm unless you really know how to accomplish them. Use the tips found here to help you decide how to move forward on your own projects. Utilize this to benefit yourself.

Norway may send more gas to UK, Europe take more Russian

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain may receive more Norwegian gas in the 2012/2013 gas year as continental European customers take more Russian supplies, which became more competitive following contract negotiations during the past months, analysts said on Monday.

European gas buyers and sellers adjust supply volumes on October 1, starting the new gas year, as the winter heating season starts in Europe.

While Norwegian gas exports to continental Europe are supplied under long-term contracts that are linked to the oil price, Britain receives most of its Norwegian gas under hub market terms that are priced off Britain's National Balancing Point (NBP) and have lesser binding supply obligations.

"Gazprom's discount is assumed to have a positive volume effect on exports to continental Europe because its gas has become more attractive than Norway's," Bjorn Brochmann, global head of gas market analysis at Point Carbon said.

In several recent contractual renegotiations Russia's Gazprom, the world's biggest exporter of pipeline gas, and Qatar, leader of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, have given in to customer pressure and reduced their prices.

With continental Europe taking more Russian gas, Norway would redirect more gas to Britain, mostly through the 70 million cubic metres (mcm) per day Langeled pipeline, Brochmann said.

"The UK is a residual market to Norwegian gas supplies and gets what is left over from continental Europe, which receives its supplies in long-term contracts and therefore have priority," Brochmann said.

"So if continental Europe takes less, that leaves more gas for export to the UK."

Point Carbon said that in three of its four outlook scenarios it expected Norwegian gas supplies to be between 26.3 to 31.8 billion cubic metres (bcm), up from 25 bcm for the 2011/2012 gas year, which is about a quarter of Britain's annual needs.

Only in their lowest scenario, which would see unusually low supplies from Norway's huge Troll oil and gas field, would Britain receive slightly less gas than last year, with expected imports of 23 bcm.

In the gas year 2011/2012, Norway supplied Britain with around 25 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas, .

Domestic British production stood at 36 bcm in the last gas year, with the rest coming from LNG as well as supplies from continental Europe, mainly the Netherlands.

Overall European gas demand is expected to remain relatively stable in 2012 overall compared with 2011, according to data published on Monday by the European gas industry lobby group Eurogas.

"Early indications from the Eurogas data suggest that gas demand in Europe is likely to remain stable throughout 2012, registering a slight decrease of 1 percent compared with 2011," Eurogas said.

NO LOWER PRICES

Even if Norway's gas supplies to Britain rise in the coming gas year, analysts said that they did not expect prices to drop as other supply sources dwindle.

Domestic British gas production is falling by an annual average of 5 percent, and although Europe's LNG imports from Qatar have risen in the last quarter as Asian and European prices converge, the price and demand outlook still favours Asia as a destination for LNG ships over Europe.

"We believe global LNG markets will remain tight as Japan continues to face nuclear plant outages, China and India rapidly build out regas capacity, and Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia emerge as new players in global LNG markets," Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research note.

"A Pacific bid for Atlantic LNG cargoes heading into the winter could support European natural gas prices at a time when demand remains in the doldrums," the bank added.

Energy consultants Timera Energy said that the dominance of oil-indexation in LNG contracts was also a bullish price signal or LNG markets.

"Given the dominance of oil-indexation in LNG contracts, the price of Brent crude is still a key driver of the pricing and opportunity cost of LNG cargoes. While the Brent price accompanied spot Asian LNG prices lower in June (towards $90/bbl), it has since recovered (to around $110/bbl). Oil-indexed LNG contract prices will have recovered accordingly."

Putnam Valley, NY. (Oct. 1, 2012) A research team from Germany has found that optimal benefit and functional improvement for ischemic stroke results when human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (hUCB MNCs) are transplanted into rat stroke models within 72 hours of the stroke. Their study is published in the current issue of Cell Transplantation (21:6), now freely available on-line at: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/ct/.

"Ischemic stroke is one of the most frequent causes of death and the most common reason for permanent disabilities in adults in industrialized nations," said Dr. Johannes Boltze, study corresponding-author from the University of Leipzig. "Despite recent research, treatment opportunities are limited and the only approved therapy to date must be administered within a narrow four and a half hour time window."

According to the authors there is a "strong demand for alternative strategies," and among those most recently studied is Cell Transplantation using neonatal or adult stem cells. Their study investigates the time-dependent efficacy of hUCB MNCs following experimental brain ischemia in rats. The emphasis of their study was exploring factors that impact on Cell Transplantation to derive the best outcomes, such as determining an appropriate transplantation time point, or window of opportunity.

The researchers transplanted hUCB MNCs into test animals at various time intervals following stroke, at four hours, 24 hours, 72 hours, 120 hours and at 14 days.

"Our results demonstrated that transplantation within a 72 hour time window resulted in an early improvement in functional recovery," said Dr. Boltze.

"The failure to induce sustained functional recovery, lesion reduction, and limitation of glial scaring in animals treated at 120 hours indicates the 72 hour time window as efficient for cell application."

The authors noted that administration of hUCB MNCs within the 72 hour window resulted not only in functional recovery but also a reduction in brain atrophy and in diminished glial scaring demonstrating the importance of this factor on the impact of umbilical cord blood Cell Transplantation. Later transplantation, at 14 days, showed no benefit.

"Our study shows that hUCB MNCs are a promising tool for acute stroke treatment, but require a comparatively early intervention in the subacute phase of stroke," concluded the authors.

"This research adds to a growing body of evidence supporting specific early time periods for repair of the brain, spinal cord, heart and other organs following acute injury and is very important in the development of regenerative therapies" said Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair at the University of South Florida.

Tablet Owners Read More News, Longer Articles: Report

ipad-news-bedA new study from Pew Research claims that the more devices we use, the more news we consume. In fact, rather than splitting the time spent consuming news between, say, a smartphone and a tablet, most users who own both devices tend to double the amount of time spent reading the news. According to the report, which was based on a survey of 9,513 U.S. adults conducted from June-August 2012, tablet owners in particular tend to read more in-depth news pieces, using their slate most in the hours before and after work.

Libya attack: GOP goes after the White House, especially Susan Rice

Questions about how the Obama administration has handled the attack in Libya that killed the US ambassador on Sept. 11 have taken a harder political edge. Some Republicans say UN Ambassador Susan Rice should resign over faulty reporting of the attack.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says it?s a scandal worse than Watergate ? that the American people ?have flat-out been lied too,? as he put it on Fox News Friday.

Eric Fehrenstrom, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney?s campaign (also speaking on Fox News), says, ?President Obama needs?to be held accountable for his?administration's attempts to?mislead the American people?about what happened in?Benghazi.?

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, has called for the resignation of United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice.

Blasphemy riots: 6 examples around the world

The broader theme here (and in many other partisan and conservative blog comments) is that President Obama wasn?t just unaware of the threat in Libya and its violent outcome, but that he and his administration were purposely untruthful about what happened.

The headline on Karl Rove?s column in the Wall Street Journal this week was ?Obama's Biggest Opponent Is the Truth.?

?Every day, it seems, he attempts to disqualify his opponent through deliberate and undeniable falsehoods,? Mr. Rove wrote. ?This is only one side of a two-sided coin. The president can't tell the truth about his own record either.?

In predicting what he?ll be dealing with in his upcoming debates with Obama, Mr. Romney himself told ?Good Morning America? earlier this month, "I think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate."

The essence of the charge about Libya by Republicans is that the administration purposely tried to downplay the incident by asserting that the attack was spontaneous, prompted by riots tied to the anti-Islam YouTube video that set off protests in Egypt, Libya, and many other Muslim countries across North Africa and the Middle East.

In the days following the attack, Ambassador Rice (and others in the administration) left the impression that the attackers took advantage of the riot to quickly gather weapons and target the relatively defenseless consulate.

Only later did administration officials, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, acknowledge that ?terrorists? ? some with possible ties (or at least supported by) Al Qaeda ? likely were involved.

GFI Cloud

GFI cloud is an IT management platform that offers administrators real-time tracking of company assets, availability, and compliance. Agents installed on each computer communicate with the cloud portal to give administrators a clear overview of what is happening with each endpoint at all times. Problem machines are grouped together and flagged so that administrators can immediately see which systems need immediate action.

Rundown of Capabilities
The capabilities are determined by the type of license you have. For this review, the trial license I had gave me access to GFI VIPRE Business Online, an antivirus product that scans for potential malware infections, and GFI Network Server Monitor Online, which provides complete visibility into the health of the computer. VIPRE detects what kind of computer it is being installed on and runs the level of malware protection appropriate for that profile. Network Server Monitor Online is also profile-based in that the types of checks and scans the service runs is determined by the computer type and software installed. Asset Tracking, or the ability to track the hardware configuration of each computer and all installed software packages, is offered for free on every single system.

There are many options that can be modified, ranging from how frequently VIPRE scans files, to the kind of scans to perform, adding new network monitoring tests, modifying hardware profiles, and even configuring the frequency of tests. I sometimes had trouble finding the appropriate screen with the options, though. The same buttons went to entirely different screens depending on where that button was. I wound up clicking around various screens to try to find the correct option. It took some time and I eventually learned where things were, but it could have been easier.

While the interface is jam-packed with features, I would have preferred a little bit more attention paid to the Help sections. Clicking on the Help link opens up a form to send a note to the GFI support team. Having access to an FAQ, links to available documentation, even a list of common help topics would have made the Help section a bit more useful.

That said, the portal does have helpful cues scattered across the pages. For example, a large button clearly shows how to add new computers to the portal. Some pages also have a link with an exclamation mark (!) icon that takes the user to the relevant section on the online User Guide. Just combining some of these questions all in one place on the Help page would have gone a long way towards making it useful.

Setup and Registration
Like Panorama9's, GFI Cloud's management portal is cloud-based, so there's nothing to install. Unlike Panorama9, with GFI Cloud, each computer being monitored needs to have an agent manually installed. Administrators sign up for an account on GFICloud.com, select the services they are interested in, and then install the agent from the portal. The agents regularly "check in," or sends information to and receives instructions from GFI Cloud. So long as the computer has an Internet connection, the agent will be able to push its status up to the cloud portal.

Thanks to the agents, administrators can track the computer's health and performance even when it is not on the corporate network.

For this review of GFI Cloud, I selected both GFI VIPRE Business Online and GFI Network Server Monitor Online, and customized which machines got which level of protection. All the machines automatically were included for asset tracking.

As soon as the agent was installed, I could see the computer in the Web interface and learned that VIPRE won't run on machines that already have a security product installed. I clicked on the "Licenses" screen and modified the license to disable VIPRE on this computer. When I went back to the main screen, the computer had a "No problems detected" status.

I logged into GFI Cloud from a different computer and tapped the "Add computers" icon on the main screen to download the agent to add the next machine. I repeated the process for two more machines running Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7. I modified the Licenses screen to have VIPRE running on them both.

The platform assigned a hardware profile to each machine. I could switch profiles manually, between, laptop server, desktop, Exchange Server, Small Business Server 2003, Small Business Server 2008, Small Business Server 2011, and SQL Server. The interface also allows you to create new profiles for other hardware types.
