Fitbloggin' Health and Fitness Conference Recap

I'm back from Fitbloggin'12 in Baltimore, Maryland. What a great weekend! FitBloggin? is an annual health and fitness conference where hundreds of bloggers and brands from across the country come together to discuss health and fitness related topics and how to utilize social media to help promote overall wellness. This was my first year attending.

I felt proud being the weight loss surgery lifestyle blogger representative and sharing what life is like with rearranged guts. We may have had an initial helping hand with surgical assistance but we're not too different from each other. Life = healthy food choices, moving the body daily and working on the head. Rinse, lather, repeat, FOREVER whether you had surgery or not.

I learned a ton at the educational sessions, made some healthy new pals and connected with some old pals. I love going to conferences like these they are so crammed packed with information, smiles and laughter.

I am thankful to Fitbloggin' for offering the opportunity to Liveblog a session in exchange for a free ticket. I was assigned to live blog a session called, "Drive More Traffic Through SEO" presented by Brandi K. of DietsinReview.com a website I often read. You can read my liveblog notes from her presentation on the Fitbloggin' website if you want to know more about Search Engine Optimization. She shared some awesome, surprisingly easy and free tips. If you blog and you want Google to give you love be sure to read the session notes.
I want to also thank Big Train makers of nom nom nom Fit Frappe for picking up some of the tab for my trip. In exchange my fellow blogging pal Beth and I had the super enjoyable task of sharing our love for their product with the new blogger pals we made. If you haven't tried Fit Frappe you have to try it, it's soooo good.
Made lots of new friends. Here's Mark L. past contestant on The Biggest Loser Season 10. My pal Beth and I shared our Big Train Fit Frappe with him and he shared one of his favorite protein sources with us. Here's Beth and I doing a video review of his Protein Ice Power Shots.

The Food: I ate some delicious food. Lots of protein. I had Maryland crab (of course) in a salad and in a killer soup. I will try and recreate that soup soon. The Fitbloggin' meals provided were great, which is not always the case at these conventions. I was impressed. Moist, flavorful chicken and salmon, lovely salads, hard boiled egg Popsicles at breaks with little bottles of Tabasco sauce (such a cute idea), a celery root soup with chive oil that was the bomb, eggplant tapenade and veggies. Lots of healthy choices for this high protein, low carber.
The Hotel: We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor. If you are going to Baltimore for a convention or family trip I highly recommend it, for location it can't be beat. The hotel staff was lovely and helpful, the convention facilities were great, the rooms are fine, comfortable beds, clean. The only negative was one night we returned late and everything was closed (hotel store, room service, there were no vending machines) so I bit the bullet at grabbed a drink out of the mini bar. I hated paying the $5 but I was dying of thirst. I hated it even more when I realized the slightly funky tasting, thicker than normal drink had expired a few weeks ago. I had them remove the charge and I'm not dead so it's all good.

The City: I had never been to Baltimore (Charm City) funny because as most of you know I grew up on Long Island. I'm a New Yorker born and raised. You'd think I'd have taken a family trip there but nope. We didn't get any daytime sightseeing in but we did walk several miles one night from our hotel in the Inner Harbor through Little Italy and Fell's Point and then took a Water Taxi home. I wrestled a giant crab and kissed a fish.

The Swag: Scored a lot of fun stuff from the awesome Fitbloggin sponsors. Super cool new RealFlex Fusion TR workout shoes from Reebok, Spices from McCormick Seasonings, that new Blender Bottle Sport Mixer, I had to have one of these stuffed eggs (a long lost cousin) from Eggland's Best, some swag sadly I had to pass on to pals... my yoga mat and a huge bottle of Febreze Laundry Odor Eliminator (for us stinky exercisers) because I was edging close to the 50 pound weight limit on my luggage. It would be cool if they did more freebie coupons next year on the big stuff for those that have to fly from distances. Despite the stuff I passed on I still have a huge bag of awesome to sample. I'll review a few in the coming weeks.

I fell in love with these mini trampolines from JumpSport Fitness they are so much fun and seriously they are one kick ass workout. I watched an hour long trainer led session and the sweat was dripping from people. I am so getting one. I need the one with the safety handle at first. I'm a little wobbly and I think the bar will help me feel more secure. I'm thinking with practice one day I will not need it but I used to twist my ankle and fall a lot before I lost weight and I think I still have a bit of a fear. If you are looking for a fun workout this is it. I mean hello?! It's a trampoline! I felt like Tom Hanks in that scene in "Big."

Next year's Fitbloggin'13 event will take place in Portland, Oregon from June 25th ? 27th. The day before my birthday so plan to come celebrate with me. If you are like me and are documenting your weight loss journey with a blog you won't want to miss it!

New Fitbloggin' pals please connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. Would love to keep in touch!

Searching for sanity in NFL pre-game shows: part 3, NBC - SB Nation

Where does NBC's pre-game show score on the studio sabermetrics?

Every year, much is written about the broadcasting of National Football League games, which change timeslots and networks and draw various large amounts of viewers. Not much, however, is written about something that rarely ever changes during the NFL season: pre-game shows. Every Tuesday for the first four weeks of the season, we'll review one of the five major football networks' pre-game shows.

Hey, internet! Want to hear some depressing numbers? Football Night in America, which airs in a TV dead zone (7 p.m. ET on Sundays) and in a timeslot that already features way too much football (4 p.m. ET games almost never wrap up by 7 p.m., plus highlight shows on NFL Network, ESPN, etc.) draws higher ratings than literally every one of the internet's favorite NBC shows. That's right, the 2.6 demo rating for Football Night was higher than the season premieres of Parks and Recreation, The Office, Up All Night, that weird Thursday edition of Saturday Night Live, and almost every episode of Community. I told you this would be depressing.

Pre-game show reviews: CBS | FOX

Anywho, I thought I'd put that statistic out there because very little is ever written about the show in comparison to Fox's Hollywood disaster film version of a pre-game, ESPN's 500 talking heads, and CBS' bore show. Maybe it's because a lot of the people covering football are all watching actual football up until about 8 p.m. ET. However, until NBC Sports Network debuts their own morning pre-game show in 2014, this is all they've got. Maybe -- as is the case with a lot of long running shows -- it's a difficult show to nitpick because it is the rare pre-game show that's... gulp... good? Let's dive in to last night's broadcast and see.

PSER

Everything in sports is chopped up into statistics nowadays, and every statistic is made into a catchy acronym. The best we could do was PSER (Pre-game Show Efficiency Rating). It sounds kinda football-ish, right? Anyway, PSER is based on a rating of 1-10 in five categories: Host Usefulness (HU), Quality of Banter Rating (QB Rating), Bloated Promotions (BP), Actual News Gathering (ANG) and Impact Rating (IR).

Host Usefulness NBC is kind of disqualified from this category, because they have two hosts: Bob Costas live from the site of the game, and Dan Patrick live from 30 Rock. It's a long show, so neither really finds themselves lacking for screen time (don't forget, this show used to have threehosts before Keith Olbermann got fired for 94th time) but it does make for a bit of a bipolar broadcast, even tripolar when Mike Florio and Peter King do their segments. Score: 3

QB Rating The banter on Football Night is probably as natural as it's going to get on NFL TV. Dungy, as righteous as he often comes off, has found a way to speak to viewers like they're adults. His rapport with Rodney Harrison and Patrick is fairly easy-going. Costas, Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and newcomer Hines Ward also have a pretty easy chemistry. It shows off the embarrassment of riches NBC displays. It also speaks to the difference between this show and the Sunday pre-game shows, in that they have actual football results to talk to. But they mix in that -- as well as previews of the night game -- quite well. The forced laughter is often there a bit -- and Patrick's old SportsCenter schtick is as stale as it gets while doing highlights -- but this is a fairly tolerable collection of personalities. Score: 7

Bloated Promotions A lot of NBC's promotional efforts are in service of NBC Sports Network, including a full segment flat out ripped from an NBCSN show in NFL Turning Point. Florio's presence on the show itself is a commercial for his Pro Football Talk show on the network. The cross-promoting is largely non-existant or invasive, however, minus the typical sponsorships.Score: 6

Actual News Gathering An unfair advantage NBC has over the other networks, but they use that advantage. It doesn't hurt having King and Florio, who are excellent at news gathering. Again, NBC has outdone the other networks, using two insiders. When they get into opinion it can be a little much, but when it comes to getting breaking news, these two are the best on TV. Score: 10

Impact Rating NBC's pre-game did something that the other pre-game shows haven't done yet: they stayed with me hours after I tuned in. Between Ward's reminiscing of how he was treated in Baltimore to Rodney Harrison's interview with the entertaining Rob Gronkowski. NBC brings a pageantry to sports broadcasting that isn't seen elsewhere (perhaps CBS on occasion), and that extends quite nicely to Football Night, which is easily the best I've seen of the pre-game shows this season. Score: 8

Overall PSER: 6.80

Current PSER Rankings:
1. Football Night in America (NBC) - 6.80
2. The NFL Today (CBS) - 5.203. Fox NFL Sunday (Fox) - 4.20

Foxconn reopens huge China factory after riot

TAIYUAN, China (Reuters) - A Chinese factory owned by iPhone assembler Foxconn resumed production on Tuesday after a riot involving 2,000 workers had forced it to close for 24 hours, in an incident that put Chinese labor conditions back under the microscope.

The huge factory that employs some 79,000 workers in northern Taiyuan city erupted into violence late on Sunday and into the early hours of Monday morning after what the plant's owner, Foxconn Technology Group of Taiwan, described as a personal dispute that spun out of control.

Workers on Tuesday morning walked back through the gates of the factory, which was still ringed by police and showed clear signs of damage caused by the fighting, in which 40 people were injured, according to Foxconn and Chinese local media.

Some gates were still flat on the ground, having been bent over, and windows were smashed. A loud speaker on a loop recording called for people to maintain social order.

Foxconn, which assembles Apple's iPhones as well as making components for other global electronics firms, has faced accusations of poor conditions and mistreatment of workers at its plants in China, where it employs about 1 million people.

The company says it has been spending heavily in recent months to improve working conditions and to raise wages.

Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo said on Tuesday that the one-day closure would not disrupt supplies from the factory.

"We have 79,000 people working in the Taiyuan campus, and we always have spare inventory," Woo said.

Foxconn does not confirm which of its plants supply Apple, but an employee told Reuters that the Taiyuan plant was among those that assembled and made parts for Apple's iPhone 5.

Foxconn said in a statement the incident had escalated from a row between several employees at around 11 p.m. on Sunday in the privately managed workers' dormitory, and was brought under control by police at around 3 a.m.

Comments posted online, however, suggested security guards may have been to blame.

Foxconn is the trading name of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, the world's largest contract maker of electronics.

Report: Sharp increases layoffs number, aiming for profitability by March 2014

Report Sharp cutting 11,000 jobs, 19% of its workforce, by March 2014

Japanese electronics giant Sharp is reportedly planning a major restructuring to bring the company back to profitability by 2014, as reported by Kyodo News. Said restructuring will see Sharp cut nearly 11,000 (10,966) jobs from its 57,170-person workforce by March 2014 -- just under 20 percent of all employees -- and sell off various assets, resulting in ¥213.1 billion ($2.7 billion) of much needed capital from lenders. Named assets to be sold include international manufacturing plants, and shares in other Japanese electronics company, Toshiba. The company also plans on shuttering its international manufacturing plants, as well as once again cutting employee wages.

So, what's gonna save Sharp from more turmoil? A rethinking of its LCD TV business, apparently, as well as a "strengthening" of the company's smartphone LCD offerings. Sharp's also moving away from solar batteries, selling off its US-based solar firm Recurrent Energy LLC. Company prez Takashi Okuda will head up the massive restructuring, leading an "emergency management committee" starting in October. All of this adds up to Sharp expecting a return to profitability by next April. You'll forgive us if we're a bit wary of that prediction, but our best wishes are with those impacted by the chaos.

Low calorie Cranberry Juice lowers Blood Pressure in healthy adults ...

?

American Heart AssociationWashington, D.C. ? Regularly drinking low-calorie cranberry juice may help get your blood pressure under control, according to new findings presented at the American Heart Association?s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions.

In a study that measured the effects of drinking low-calorie cranberry juice, participants drank either low-calorie juice or a placebo drink every day for eight weeks as part of a controlled diet.

Blood pressure was measured at the beginning, mid-point and end of the study. After eight weeks, blood pressure values had significantly dropped from an average of 121/73 mmHg to 118/70 mmHg for those drinking the low-calorie cranberry juice. The placebo group showed no change.

Researchers note that cranberry juice is rich in antioxidants ? naturally occurring molecules in fruit, tea, wine and other foods ? which have been associated with lower blood pressure in other studies.
