Introducing TechCrunch?s Team Europe ? Building Out Internationally From Here

tcecuropebiglogoIt's been a fascinating road since I joined TechCrunch in September 2007 to build out TechCrunch's European arm. Five years on to the week, I'm today sitting at the still-fresh Campus London venue where hundreds of startup people pass through every week. We've come a long way. Five years ago you would have found me sitting in some East London coffee shop which had barely just installed Wifi. Five years ago the tech startup scene in Europe was -- at least for a journalist -- a little like a chicken scratching around in the dirt looking for a rare grass seed. Today, there are startup hubs, co-working spaces, accelerators, and a growing number of VCs (old and new) in Europe. Yes, the eco-system is still growing, it's still fractured by language and geography (although low-budget airlines are helping solve that). And these days I can hit a European conference and run into great people I already know as well as a veritable tsunami of new faces, every time. And not just European: I'm including our cousins in the Middle East and Africa in this as well. It's been fun. Maybe we should have a birthday party or something? But in any case, it's time to re-introduce ourselves to you. And by that I mean the team we've built out in London, and which will be roaming internationally from here. We cover big U.S. stories with a fresh eye, even as our colleagues there hit the sack. And at the same time we're building out TC's international coverage from a time-zone better suited to this side of the planet. As we say at TechCrunch: "Sharks never sleep and neither does TC." So without any further ado, in alphabetical order, I give you the team:

Antibiotic-resistant pathogens persist in antibiotic-free pigs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Researchers from North Carolina State University have found identical strains of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter Coli (C. coli) in both antibiotic-free (ABF) and conventionally raised pigs. This finding may indicate that these antibiotic-resistant pathogens can persist and thrive in the environment, regardless of antimicrobial usage by pork producers.

Dr. Siddhartha Thakur, assistant professor of population health and pathobiology, had previously found that antibiotic-resistant C. coli, a leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., was present in both ABF-certified and conventionally raised pigs. The pathogen was present in both groups in all facilities from breeding to processing. Thakur wanted to determine whether the C. coli that he found in each group was genetically the same, in order to see if the presence or absence of antimicrobial usage had an effect on the pathogen's genetic makeup.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens like C. coli is a concern for the food animal industry. Some pig farms have switched to raising ABF pigs in an attempt to get away from the conditions that facilitated antibiotic resistance in the first place. The hope is that once the selection pressure -- in the form of antimicrobial use -- on C. coli to retain antibiotic resistance decreases, the pathogen will lose its resistance.

Over several years, Thakur and Ph.D. student Macarena Quintana-Hayashi collected thousands of samples from pigs and their surrounding environments, and performed a genetic analysis on 200 representative isolates of C. coli, to see if these strains were similar. They found that the Campylobacter populations in the two swine production systems (conventional and ABF) were in fact the same. Since the different pig populations never came into contact, the researchers concluded that the environment must be playing a large role in the continuing survival of antibiotic-resistant C. coli.

Thakur's findings appear online in PLoS One.

"In the case of ABF pigs, the environment plays an important role in their exposure to these resistant strains," Thakur says. "If the environment itself, and not the pig, is serving as a reservoir for C. coli, then we will most probably continue to find resistant bacterial populations, regardless of a producer's antimicrobial use."

Woman jailed for not deleting Facebook posts

57 min.

A woman was jailed after ignoring a judge?s order to delete her Facebook account after comments she made on the site about her own reckless driving prompted the order.

According to Louisville, Ky., NBC affiliate WAVE, victims of a hit-and-run car accident, in which Paula Asher was allegedly at fault, were so upset by her post that the court had to step in. "My dumb (expletive) got a dui and I hit a car?lol,? Asher wrote on her Facebook profile soon after the incident took place.

The careless status update apparently prompted the parents of the four teenagers who were in the other car at the time to notify District Judge Mary Jane Phelps about the statement who, in turn, demanded that Asher disable her page. When she did not comply, Phelps slapped Asher with a two-day jail sentence for contempt of court.

"I really wasn't trying to make fun of (the crash)," Asher said.

According to Lex18.com, a Lexington, Ky., NBC news site, police believe Asher's car struck a vehicle that four teens were riding in and then fled the scene of the accident before police arrived.

It's unclear if Asher was ordered not to discuss the case prior to creating the post. It's also unclear under which law Phelps ordered Asher to stop using Facebook.

Asher will be back in court with Phelps to face the charges outlined in her Facebook post on on Sept. 27.

"I apologize to everybody," she said. "I apologize to the judge. I didn't mean to hurt anybody," Asher said.? "I didn't think 'lol' would put me in jail."

Tools & Home Improvement Equipment: Ruin

Ruin (Paperback)
By N.M. Martinez

Review & Description

Thirty years ago, there was a revolution.

Humans were granted powers through experiments performed upon them against their will. They broke free from the Labs and burned across the land, creating a dangerous new territory called the Wildlands.

Paula has grown up in the Neutral Territory, never knowing a time without the neighboring Wildlands as a threat. Her government does what it can to protect her people, but they still live in fear of the powerful Wildlanders invading their safe and protected territory.

The Progression Tree by Wanda McGuire

The Progression Tree by Wanda McGuire

The Progression Tree is the inside story of addiction from the perspective of one who has spent her life dealing with the chaos and drama of more than one family members attraction to chemicals. The graph depicted here begins with the characteristics most probable in a family predisposed to addiction. Recognition of the genetic predisposition is discussed in the root thinking base of the tree. The graph continues by bringing forth characteristics in the dysfunctional family setting that bring young people together to create the honeymoon couple and the Cinderella codependent, thus building the foundation or trunk for the relationship. The graph then moves strongly into the phase that describes a Worrier codependent and the tactics used to help build the dream of a perfect family, while in denial that chemicals are fighting her all the way. After years of struggle, we will see the affects of painful battles lost in the weakest part of the branch and visit the reality of the Victim codependent. With a much needed spiritual awakening will come the realization of powerlessness and a new direction into growth. The path is not easy and may take many unexpected turns but it can work for those who are ready and willing to take the steps required. This book is specifically written for the person who is truly looking for a way out of the imprisonment of codependency. This person must be willing to brave the emotional pain of moving out of denial and into honesty. This person must respect the destiny of others and let go of the battle, giving their loved ones the dignity to make their own choices. In the end, this person will find peace in the letting go of an unhealthy emotional connection we call codependency.

Oil climbs above $99; gasoline at avg. $3.86

(AP) ? The price of oil is rising Monday, adding to a big gain last week after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced new steps to boost the U.S. economy.

Benchmark crude gained 44 cents to $99.44 in early trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil ended 2.7 percent higher last week.

The Fed's plan, which includes keeping interest rates at extraordinarily low rates into 2015, gives investors the incentive to put their money into riskier assets like commodities. But the higher oil rises, the more analysts believe consumers will pull back on spending.

While higher oil prices tend to drive up prices at the pump, the end of the summer driving season means demand should drop.

The national average for gasoline Monday is $3.862, down slightly from Friday.

NFL pulls side judge for being Saints fan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? The NFL has removed a replacement official from the New Orleans-Carolina game because it discovered he's a Saints fan.

Side judge Brian Stropolo has been replaced by an alternate, Tim Keese. The NFL made the decision Sunday morning just hours before kickoff.

"He was replaced because of the information that surfaced disclosing that he is a Saints fan," league spokesman Michael Signora said.

The league will look further into the matter. It received several phone calls and emails about Stropolo, who is from New Orleans and posted several photos of himself in Saints gear tailgating at a preseason game on his Facebook page.

Stropolo's Facebook page has since been taken down.

Stropolo worked the Week 1 NFL opener, a nationally televised game between the Cowboys and the defending Super Bowl champion Giants.

ESPN was first to report the news.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney declined comment on the situation, calling it "a league matter."

The NFL locked out the regular officials in June after their contract expired. Negotiations with the NFL Referees Association broke down several times during the summer, including just before the season, and the league is using replacements for the first time since 2001.

Back then, the lockout lasted for one week of the regular season before a settlement was reached. This is the second weekend the replacements are being used, and the NFL has drawn up a five-week schedule for using them if the labor dispute is not resolved.

Last week, there was one major error by the replacement officials, when they awarded Seattle an extra timeout in the final minutes of a game at Arizona. The Cardinals held on to win and the crew's referee admitted the mistake after the game.
