U.S. Department Of Health & Human Services Partners With Ad Coun

U.S. Department Of Health & Human Services Partners With Ad Coun

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Partners with Ad Council and DreamWorks to Combat Childhood Obesity PSAs featuring Shrek characters urge kids to "Be a Player. Get up and play an hour a day." WASHINGTON, D.C., February 1, 2007 / PRNewswire / – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Ad Council joined with DreamWorks Animation SKG today to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to help address childhood obesity. Featuring characters from the movie Shrek, the PSAs are an extension of HHS' ongoing "Small Step" Childhood Obesity Prevention campaign, which encourages children and families to lead healthy lifestyles. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt unveiled the ads at a press conference in Washington, D.C. this morning. The new PSAs, using the slogan "Be a Player: Get up and play an hour a day," urge all children to engage in physical activity. The PSAs will complement the current "Can your food do that?" PSAs which promote the benefits of eating healthy foods. Created pro bono by ad agency GSD&M, the ads include television, outdoor ads and web banners, which direct children and families to visit HHS's newly redesigned website, www.HealthierUS.gov, for suggestions on a healthier lifestyle. The Cannery, a west coast online development firm, created the new homepage, along with a kid's website at www.smallstep.gov, which includes games and activities to support the new PSAs. "We are pleased to collaborate with DreamWorks Animation SKG to address childhood obesity and possibly thwart the onset of chronic disease," said HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt. "I hope to find innovative ways to work as partners with many other companies in creating a culture of wellness. I am a strong supporter of the President's HealthierUS initiative and encourage all Americans to be physically active every day; eat a nutritious diet; get their preventive screenings; and make healthy choices." According to HHS' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. More than 10 million school age children in America–18 percent are considered overweight. In addition to the psychological and social issues of stigmatization, overweight children are at far greater risk of growing into adults who have cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases that may reduce the length and quality of their lives. During the event, Secretary Leavitt announced campaign support from member companies of the Ad Council's Coalition for Healthy Children. The Coalition was initiated in 2005 to help combat childhood obesity by developing consistent, research-based messaging for marketers, media, government agencies, non-profits, academics and the private sector. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided support for the Ad Council's research and development of these health messages, which will ultimately be disseminated to the public by Coalition member organizations such as PepsiCo, General Mills, Kraft Foods, Kellogg, Coca-Cola, SUBWAY, McDonald's, American Heart Association, Girls Scouts of the USA, Shaping America's Health, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Univision Communications. During 2007 and 2008, the Coalition will provide messaging and creative material for its members to utilize in their own communications, including an online presence across major marketers, non-profits and government agency websites, in-store and on-pack promotions sponsored by advertisers and significant media commitments. These materials will support the work of HHS and extend the "Be a Player" message, some of which will reach consumers in the first quarter of 2007. Further details regarding Coalition member support can be found in the accompanying quotes from organization spokespersons. "Despite all of the emphasis focused on childhood obesity in our country during the last several years, many children and families are still not making the necessary changes to lead healthy lifestyles," said Ad Council President and CEO Peggy Conlon. "We are delighted to continue our partnership with HHS with this new series of PSAs that are both motivating and entertaining for children. I am confident that this work, combined with the wonderful efforts of our Coalition, will have a significant impact on this epidemic." Using the Ad Council's model, all of the PSAs will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media. Several media companies have made commitments to donate time and space to support the PSAs. These media companies include Nickelodeon, Outdoor Advertising Association of America, Turner Broadcasting System, Univision Communications, Discovery Communications, Azteca America, Comcast Spotlight and Cox Communications. "DreamWorks Animation is pleased to support HHS and the Ad Council on this important initiative," said company chairman Roger Enrico. "We can think of nothing more important than the well-being of our children. It's a delight for us to be able to share Shrek, Donkey and other great movie characters to help encourage kids to play and be active." "We were honored to be asked to help with this campaign with some new partners and DreamWorks," added Roy Spence, president and founder of GSD&M. "Using Shrek and all the wonderful characters in this creative collaboration was the perfect way to show children why it's important to get out and play." In addition to the new Shrek creative, the Ad Council and HHS are continuing their Small Step Obesity Prevention PSAs with new work (television, radio, outdoor, Web) expected to launch in April 2007. In an effort to further the reach of these ads and generate excitement among youth, HHS will partner with YouTube for an online video contest beginning in Spring 2007 that will encourage participants to submit videos based on the Small Step content. The Obesity Prevention campaign launched in March 2004, targeting adults, and focuses on the power of small steps taken regularly. The campaign expanded its target to children in the fall of 2005 and currently aims to encourage all children and families to lead healthy lifestyles. Since the campaign launch, the PSAs have received more than 0 million in total donated media support. Additionally, the campaign website, www.smallstep.gov, attracted an average of 190,000 visits per month during 2006. For more information about the Childhood Obesity Prevention campaign, and to learn how kids and adults can lead a healthier lifestyle, log onto www.HealthierUS.gov.

There may have been no signature moment at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, but there was a signature sound: the screams of teenage girls wild about One Direction.

It stopped just short of a British invasion, but the hunky teens in the boy band won three awards on Thursday night's show and barged in on Rihanna's party.

Rihanna kicked off things with a spicy performance to open Thursday night's show, then ended it by taking the show's top honor, video of the year, for her steamy hit "We Found Love."

"Doesn't my girl Rihanna look sexy tonight?" Katy Perry asked the crowd after the performance.

And the night's lead nominee did, showing up in a pixie cut and a figure-hugging, elegant scoop-backed white dress before changing into a flowing red outfit for her medley of new single "Cockiness (I Love It)" with rapper A$AP Rocky and "We Found Love." She brushed imaginary dust from her shoulder as she walked to the stage to thank fans and her creative team.

The camera returned to the pop star often ? except when it was on One Direction, which provided the night's most screamed-over performance. The band won best pop video, best new artist and most share-worthy video.

"We've grown up watching this show and to even be here is an honor," Niall Horan said from the stage.

The quintet, put together by Simon Cowell after "The X Factor" auditions and the first British act to debut atop the Billboard 200 album chart, seemed stunned as fans screamed upon announcement of their win.

The group performed later, rising to a stairwell surrounded by screaming, reaching female fans on an elevated platform and bringing most attendees to their feet. Members of the U.S. gymnastics team sang along to their song "One Thing" and cameras caught Perry and Rihanna whispering to each other.

"This has been unbelievable," Harry Styles said backstage. "This was our favorite performance we've ever done. For us to be here in the first place is amazing, and to perform and win a Moonman is amazing."

While there was no easily identifiable signature moment early on, there were a few interesting sights. Pink floated above the crowd on a pair of oversized lips as she performed her new song "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" before Frank Ocean wowed with a somber, moonlit version of his song "Thinking About You." Then there was Olympic champion Gabby Douglas flipping on stage to new Alicia Keys song "Girl on Fire," and Taylor Swift dove into the crowd after a group sing-a-long of her new hit "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

Chris Brown pulled off something of an upset in the best male video category. Rihanna's former boyfriend won for his self-directed video "Turn Up The Music," beating out several top stars, including Drake, who tied Rihanna for most nominations with five. Brown also won for best cinematography. M.I.A. was the night's only other multiple winner, taking two off-camera awards for direction and cinematography.

Drake won best hip-hop video for "HYFR," which featured Lil Wayne. He talked about his black and Jewish roots growing up in Toronto and his sometimes outsider status.

"I want to dedicate this award to any kid that's ever had a long walk home by yourself," Drake said. "This is for you, man, for real. We made it."

Host Kevin Hart, who promised no one would be spared his comedic barbs, opened up old wounds between Brown and Drake in his opening monologue, spoofing the two for the bar brawl that took place between their entourages in June.

Drake and friends Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne sat stone-faced as Hart joked: "Nip it in the bud, guys. I'm tired of it. Fix it tonight."

Minaj, dressed in a skintight full-body outfit, won best female video for "Starships." Coldplay took best rock video for "Paradise." And Calvin Harris ? the show's house DJ who's featured on "We Found Love"? won the first best electronic dance music award for "Feel So Close." Beyonce, Perry, Skrillex and Demi Lovato won awards not televised on the show.

MTV tried something new this year, unveiling a double-decker red carpet that featured two stories of stars and celebrities. Thousands of fans lined up outside the show's new home, the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In a bit of foreshadowing, One Direction drew the loudest cheers of the day ? something even rivals The Wanted acknowledged ? even though fans had to labor under a scorching sun with the temperature at 90 degrees.

The sun was especially hot for Amber Rose, who accentuated her pregnant belly with a black lace gown as she and fiance Wiz Khalifa showed off a baby bump.

"I'm hot, and my feet hurt, but I look gorgeous," Rose said.

While touching, the moment didn't rise to the level of The Baby Bump ? when Beyonce showed her unannounced pregnancy on the red carpet last year ? Taylor vs. Kanye or The Kiss.

Lil Wayne had one of the night's most tweeted performances when he debuted his heavily bleeped new song "No Worries." And Keys, who debuted "Girl on Fire," drew attention well before she took the stage. The singer and her producer husband Swizz Beatz were spotted with their almost 2-year-old son, Egypt, bobbing up and down on Beatz' lap during Pink's expletive-laden performance of "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)."

There was hubbub on Twitter where several of Keys' fans noted the bawdy nature of the VMAs. Others just thought Egypt was cute.

Twitter Poised to Best Facebook in 2012 Mobile Ad Revenue

Twitter Poised to Best Facebook in 2012 Mobile Ad Revenue Twitter Poised to Best Facebook in 2012 Mobile Ad RevenueTwitter is about to top a fellow titan in social networking.

On Friday, BI Intelligence reported the latest findings and projections in the mobile ad revenue space. According to the research shared publicly, Twitter will take home more U.S. mobile advertising revenues this year than Facebook.

That comes directly from data presented in a new forecast by eMarketer.

?Twitter will earn $129.7 million in mobile advertising revenues this year in the U.S. Facebook, which rolled out mobile ads for the first time this year, will come in at just over half that amount, at $72.7 million in the U.S.,? Business Insider summarized today.

eMarketer bases its estimates for mobile advertising revenues on an analysis of reported revenues from company releases; estimates from other research firms on advertising revenues, pricing, impressions and other factors; usage trends at major mobile advertising publishers; and eMarketer interviews with executives at ad agencies, brands, online ad publishers and other industry leaders. eMarketer?s estimate for overall US mobile advertising spending in 2012 is unchanged from the previous forecast. This is eMarketer?s first forecast for mobile advertising revenue at Twitter, Facebook and Pandora.

According to comments made by several mobile industry watchers this morning, the newfound status of Twitter and Facebook in the eyes of the advertising community will continue to drive mobile revenue opportunities and earnings for both companies in the near future.

Savannah St getting 70 1/2 points vs Florida St

OK, so you're planning to plop down a few bucks on a college football game _ legally, of course _ and trying to decide whether to stick with the favorite or take the points.

Well, here's a tough one.

If you go with No. 6 Florida State in Saturday's game against lowly Savannah State, you'll be starting with a 70 1/2-point deficit.

That's right, SEVENTY AND A HALF!

"Without a doubt," said Mike Colbert, vice president of risk management for Las Vegas-based Cantor Gaming, "this is the biggest line I've put up in 10 years doing this."

No kidding. From all indications, this is largest point spread ever for a Division I game.

But before you race out to bet the mortgage on the underdog, consider this: The Tigers were nearly as big an underdog last week _ in the 65 1/2-point range _ and they didn't come close to covering. No. 18 Oklahoma State romped to an 84-0 rout, handing Savannah State its eighth straight defeat going back to last season.

"We had to make an even bigger line for Florida State," Cantor said, "because we think Florida State is better than Oklahoma State."

Savannah State (0-1) scheduled these first two games strictly for the money. The school is collecting paychecks totaling $860,000, which will go a long way toward helping the financially strapped athletic program meet its total budget of $5.1 million.

"You preach the same message. We're going to get on the bus to Tallahassee with the thought of winning the game," Tigers coach Steve Davenport bravely told the Savannah Morning News. "The reality is the reality and we'll see how we pan out. The charge is to play as hard as you can for 60 minutes, no different than it was for Oklahoma State."

Cantor said most of the early money from Vegas betters was on the underdog.

"I think people just saw the big number and instantly put their bets on Savannah State," he said. "I don't think they put much thought into it."

Of course, the bookies are more careful with their money. Cantor had several factors to consider before setting the historic spread in favor of Florida State (1-0).

"It was an interesting line to make," he said. "If Florida State wanted to play its top guys the entire game, they could probably win by a hundred. But some guesswork comes in with a number like this. It's not purely about statistics and numbers. How long will they play their top guys? Will they run the score up? Quite frankly, I expect Florida State to play (the starters) for at least the first half."

The main goal for the Seminoles, Cantor figured, is to get through the game without injuries to any key players before they open their Atlantic Coast Conference schedule the following week. There is absolutely no possibility of losing this game.

"You know they'll want to be healthy for their conference games," the oddsmaker pointed out. "That said, Florida State's backups are better than Savannah State's starters. I don't expect them to stop scoring."

In the locker room immediately after getting blown out by Oklahoma State, Davenport questioned the wisdom of scheduling such a mismatch, no matter what it meant to the school financially. He has softened his stance since then, but still worries about sending the little team that couldn't against such a vastly superior squad for the second week in a row.

"It's almost like the parent of a Little Leaguer," the coach said. "You're more concerned than the kid is. The kid just wants an opportunity. And that's what our kids want, an opportunity to show themselves in a better light."

There's nowhere to go but up.

Savannah State is one of the worst teams in the Football Championship Subdivision, going 4-72 against teams from that lower-level division. They've lost seven of their last 11 games by at least 30 points. The offense is basically nonexistent, having scored one touchdown in its last five games.

Now, they're going up against a top-10 team in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the best of the best.

That's how you end up with the most lopsided spread in betting history.

Asked if he felt bad for Savannah State when he set the staggering line, Colbert said, "Part of me does. But part of me knows they are getting paid like a half-million dollars (actually, it's $475,000) to play the game. That's probably worth it. I'd go play for a half-million dollars."

Savannah State receiver Simon Heyward tried to put another positive spin on facing the Seminoles.

"When it's all said and done and I get out of college, I want to make it to the NFL," he said. "It would be good to have some Florida State film on my highlight tape. This game is pretty big. Who knows? I might get some scouts looking at me if I ball out."

Hmmm, that guy sounds pretty confident.

Maybe we should take the points.

Eastwood talks about convention chat with chair

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Clint Eastwood said the idea to use an empty seat as a prop at the Republican National Convention was a spur-of-the-moment decision when someone backstage asked if he wanted to sit down.

In his first interview since his Aug. 30 appearance at the convention to pledge support for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Eastwood told the Carmel Pine Cone that his speech was not only unscripted, it was pretty much spontaneous.

"There was a stool there, and some fella kept asking me if I wanted to sit down," Eastwood told the weekly newspaper in the small California city where he once was mayor. "When I saw the stool sitting there, it gave me the idea. I'll just put the stool out there and I'll talk to Mr. Obama and ask him why he didn't keep all of the promises he made to everybody."

Eastwood's peculiar, sometimes rambling conversation with an imaginary President Barack Obama in an empty chair set the blogosphere and social media ablaze. Reaction to his appearance generally has split along party lines, with Republicans raving about his stinging rebuke of Obama and Democrats ridiculing him as old, angry and out of touch.

The 82-year-old Eastwood said he set out to make three points and he achieved his goal.

"That not everybody in Hollywood is on the left, that Obama has broken a lot of the promises he made when he took office, and that the people should feel free to get rid of any politician who's not doing a good job," Eastwood said in the interview, which was conducted Tuesday but not published until Friday. "But I didn't make up my mind exactly what I was going to say until I said it."

Political conventions normally are tightly scripted and Romney's campaign aides had wanted details about what Eastwood planned to say.

"They vet most of the people, but I told them, 'You can't do that with me, because I don't know what I'm going to say,'" Eastwood said.

Eastwood acknowledged his presentation was "very unorthodox" but said he knew that would be the case.

"They've got this crazy actor who's 82 years old up there in a suit," he said. "I was a mayor, and they're probably thinking I know how to give a speech, but even when I was mayor I never gave speeches. I gave talks."

Eastwood said he was told to speak for five minutes but he said it was difficult to gauge time and there weren't any signals or cues telling him to wrap up. He ended up speaking for about 12 minutes.

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, later came backstage to thank him.

"They were very enthusiastic, and we were all laughing," Eastwood said.

Eastwood, who stars in the upcoming movie "Trouble with the Curve," maintains Obama doesn't deserve a second term as president.

"President Obama is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people," Eastwood said. "Romney and Ryan would do a much better job running the country, and that's what everybody needs to know. I may have irritated a lot of the lefties, but I was aiming for people in the middle."

Despite all the attention he received, Eastwood hadn't granted any interviews since his speech. Even his longtime manager, Leonard Hirshan, told The Associated Press he was unaware Eastwood had spoken to the newspaper.

"You're telling me something for the first time," Hirshan said.

Hirshan stressed that as a manager, he wouldn't necessarily know about Eastwood's dealings with the media. The actor has no publicist.

Things You Need To Know AboutCompounding A Structured ...

Home ? All, Structured Settlement Alerts

Compounding Structured Settlements (http://www NULL.freedigitalphotos NULL.net/images/Charts_and_Graphs_g197-Profit_Puzzle_p57281 NULL.html)Younger injured parties (under age50) can often benefit from the use of an inflation-adjusting component in their structured settlement. This means their payouts gradually increase at typically a 3 percent compounding rate. For older injured parties, however, an inflation component is not recommended. The person?s life expectancy does not warrant it.

For example, if a 52-year-old woman were awarded a$1 million annuity settlement, she would receive approximately $4,500 a month for 34 years (her life expectancy). With a 3 percent inflation component, she would receive $2,516 per month the first year, which would increase but not reach $4,500 per month until the 21st year. The $1,984 difference each month over the 21 years adds up to$500,000 tax-free. In most cases, she could probably make better use of the larger monthly amount while she is in her 50s and 60s, or she could decide to invest or save the extra cash she does not use for later in life. By eliminating the inflation factor, she has many more options for her money.

A similar analogy could be made for Social Security payouts. Many people are tempted to postpone collecting their Social Security benefits until they can receive the maximum payout at age 70 instead of collecting at age 66, when you are not restricted by how much you can earn each year. Factoring the income lost over the four years between ages 66 and 70 can be sizable and should not be dismissed.

While younger injured parties often require long-term planning for inflation as well as for education and other milestone expenses, for older clients, attorneys should strive to arrange for a sufficient stream of income to meet the financial needs throughout the life of their client.
