Carbon pollution up to 2 million pounds a second

(AP) ? The amount of heat-trapping pollution the world spewed rose again last year by 3 percent. So scientists say it's now unlikely that global warming can be limited to a couple degrees, which is an international goal.

The overwhelming majority of the increase was from China, the world's biggest carbon dioxide polluter. Of the planet's top 10 polluters, the United States and Germany were the only countries that reduced their carbon dioxide emissions.

Last year, all the world's nations combined pumped nearly 38.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, according to new international calculations on global emissions published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change. That's about a billion tons more than the previous year.

The total amounts to more than 2.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide released into the air every second.

Because emissions of the key greenhouse gas have been rising steadily and most carbon stays in the air for a century, it is not just unlikely but "rather optimistic" to think that the world can limit future temperature increases to 2 degrees, said the study's lead author, Glen Peters at the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo, Norway.

Three years ago, nearly 200 nations set the 2-degree temperature goal in a nonbinding agreement. Negotiators now at a conference under way in Doha, Qatar, are trying to find ways to reach that target.

The only way, Peters said, is to start reducing world emissions now and "throw everything we have at the problem."

Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist at the University of Victoria in Canada who was not part of the study, said: "We are losing control of our ability to get a handle on the global warming problem."

In 1997, most of the world agreed to an international treaty, known as the Kyoto Protocol, that required developed countries such as the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 5 percent when compared with the baseline year of 1990. But countries that are still developing, including China and India, were not limited by how much carbon dioxide they expelled. The United States never ratified the treaty.

The latest pollution numbers, calculated by the Global Carbon Project, a joint venture of the Energy Department and the Norwegian Research Council, show that worldwide carbon dioxide levels are 54 percent higher than the 1990 baseline.

The 2011 figures for the biggest polluters:

1. China, up 10 percent to 10 billion tons.

2. United States, down 2 percent to 5.9 billion tons

3. India, up 7 percent to 2.5 billion tons.

4. Russia, up 3 percent to 1.8 billion tons.

5. Japan, up 0.4 percent to 1.3 billion tons.

6. Germany, down 4 percent to 0.8 billion tons.

7. Iran, up 2 percent to 0.7 billion tons.

8. South Korea, up 4 percent to 0.6 billion tons.

9. Canada, up 2 percent to 0.6 billion tons.

10. South Africa, up 2 percent to 0.6 billion tons.

NY's Wang named designer at Paris' Balenciaga

NEW YORK (AP) ? Young downtown designer Alexander Wang is taking over the creative direction of storied Paris fashion label Balenciaga, likely bringing his cool-girl, sporty look to a house made famous by its founder for graceful, fluid lines.

The company made the announcement on Monday that 28-year-old Wang would fill the spot vacated last month by Nicolas Ghesquiere, who left after a 15-year run there.

Wang's "proven talent, modernity and individual and cosmopolitan vision of design will naturally embrace and enrich the unique heritage of this fashion house," said Isabelle Guichot, president and CEO of Balenciaga, said in a statement.

Wang comes with credibility: His seasonal runway shows are considered bellwethers of fast-fashion trends, and he has won Council of Fashion Designers of America awards in womenswear and accessory design.

Wang will oversee those categories as well as menswear, and he'll help craft Balenciaga's overall image.

"I am deeply honored to embark on this new role for a brand and house that I have such great admiration and respect for," Wang said.

Still, he'll likely bring a different ? and maybe more casual ? sensibility to a company founded by Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga, a contemporary of Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. The brand was founded in 1919, but Balenciaga started making real waves in fashion with its first Paris collections in 1937.

Balenciaga died in 1972, and the house didn't fully regain its footing until Ghesquiere took over in 1997 and brought critical acclaim along with pop-star fans such as Beyonce and Rihanna.

Wang has a similar celebrity appeal, and he's a favorite with fashion editors and the models. At his show last February, for example, he staged a catwalk comeback for the likes of Gisele Bundchen, Carmen Kass and Shalom Harlow.

Wang will continue his New York-based signature collection.

Construction industry spends least on IT | Equipment World ...

On average, construction companies only spend 1.35 percent of their revenues on information technology, placing the industry last behind 14 others in a report done by Gartner Research.

Construction companies with revenue of $250 million were found to spend 1.6 percent of their revenues on IT, while those companies with revenue of $10 billion were found to spend 1.1 percent, according to the report.

Closely competing with construction for last place in the report was the retail industry, whose companies with $250 million in revenue spend 1.9 percent on IT, while those with $10 billion in revenue only spend 0.9 percent.

The federal government and the banking industry topped the list. In 2013, Gartner forecasts worldwide enterprise IT spending increasing by 2.5 percent to $2.7 trillion.

It?s unclear whether construction will see much change to its ranking in coming years, but it?s very likely the construction industry?s IT spending will at least increase as tablets, smartphones, software and telematics become more of a fixture both on the jobsite and inside the office.

During Trimble Dimensions 2012, Trimble President and CEO Steve Berglund spoke about the five tech trends he sees impacting construction today. Three of those ? processing power, increased/faster wireless data connectivity and cheaper/more expansive data storage ? should affect construction IT spending in the next few years.

In addition, an increased emphasis was placed behind the agcXML standard for construction software development by the formation of the Construction Open Software Alliance earlier this year. The hope is that the adoption of the standard will result in better integration between software and increased use.

Murder-suicide involving Chiefs' player stuns team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? It began like any other Saturday for the Kansas City Chiefs during the NFL season, their general manager and coach at work early to put final touches on this weekend's gameplan. Then they got a call to hurry to the parking lot.

The two men rushed through the glass doors of Chiefs headquarters and came face-to-face with linebacker Jovan Belcher, holding a handgun to his head.

Belcher had already killed his girlfriend and sped the short distance to Arrowhead Stadium, right past a security checkpoint guarding the entrance. Upon finding his bosses, Belcher thanked general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel for giving him a chance in the NFL. Then he turned away and pulled the trigger.

The murder-suicide shocked a franchise that has been dealing with controversies now made trivial by comparison: eight consecutive losses, injuries too numerous to count, discontent among fans and the prospect that Pioli and Crennel could be fired at season's end.

Authorities did not release a possible motive while piecing together the case, other than to note that Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had been arguing frequently.

The two of them left behind a 3-month-old girl. She was being cared for by family.

The Chiefs issued a statement that said their game Sunday afternoon against the Carolina Panthers would go on as scheduled, even as the franchise tried to come to grips with the awfulness of Belcher's death.

"The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in brief a statement.

A spokesman for the team told The Associated Press that Crennel plans to coach on Sunday.

"I can tell you that you have absolutely no idea what it's like to see someone kill themselves," said Kansas City Mayor Sly James, who spoke to Pioli shortly after the shootings.

"You can take your worst nightmare and put someone you know and love in that situation, and give them a gun and stand three feet away and watch them kill themselves. That's what it's like," James said. "It's unfathomable."

Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn told The Kansas City Star that when the team met later Saturday morning, Crennel broke the news to them.

"It was obviously tough for coach to have to tell us that," Quinn said. "He really wasn't able to finish talking to us. We got together and prayed and then we moved on."

But Quinn said the team was so stunned, it was hard to digest what had happened.

"It's hard mostly because I keep thinking about what I could have done to stop this," he said. "I think everyone is wondering whether we would have done something to prevent this from happening."

The 25-year-old Belcher was from West Babylon, N.Y., and played college football at Maine. He signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, made the team and hung around the past four years, eventually moving into the starting lineup. He played in all 11 games this season.

The NFL released a statement expressing sympathy and pledging "to provide assistance in any way that we can." The players' association has also been in touch with members of the Chiefs.

"We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted," Hunt said. "We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."

The drama unfolded early Saturday when authorities received a call from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles from the Arrowhead complex. The call came from Belcher's mother, who referred to the victim as her daughter.

"She treated Kasandra like a daughter," Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp said, adding that the woman had recently moved in with the couple, "probably to help out with the baby."

Police then got a phone call from the Chiefs' training facility, and Belcher's description matched the suspect description from the initial address. Snapp said officers pulled into the practice facility parking lot in a matter of minutes, in time to witness the suicide.

"Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him," Snapp said. "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger.

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him," Snapp said. "He was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

Members of the Chiefs mostly laid low Saturday, but a few reacted on Twitter.

"I am devastated by this mornings events," Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali wrote. "I want to send my thoughts and prayers out to everyone effected by this tragedy."

A large group of Belcher's friends and relatives gathered Saturday at his boyhood home on Long Island.

His family turned the front yard into a shrine, with a large poster of Belcher, an array of his trophies, and jerseys and jackets from Kansas City, Maine and West Babylon High.

"He was a good, good person ... a family man. A loving guy," said family friend Ruben Marshall, who said he coached Belcher in youth football. "You couldn't be around a better person."

At least 20 people gathered for a large group hug in the driveway.

"He was a tremendous player and all those things, and his accolades speak for themselves, but he lit up when he spoke about his mom, or when he hugged his family after games," said Dwayne Wilmot, who was Belcher's position coach at Maine and is now an assistant coach at Yale.

"It's difficult to talk about Jovan in the past tense," he told the AP. "There's going to be unanswered questions, the why's of this tragedy. It'll never be truly known to us."

Wilmot said he'd stayed in touch with Belcher the past few years through social media.

"He was someone who took genuine pleasure in bringing happiness to others," Wilmot said. "I was so excited when he became a father, because I knew he'd be a great father."

His girlfriend's Facebook page shows the couple smiling and holding the baby.

Belcher is the latest among several players and NFL retirees to die from self-inflicted gunshot wounds during the past few years. The death of star linebacker Junior Seau, who shot himself in the chest in at his California home last May, sent shockwaves around the league.

Seau's family, like those of other suicide victims, donated his brain tissue to medical authorities to determine if head injuries he sustained playing football might be linked to his death. That report has not been released, although an autopsy showed no underlying hemorrhaging or bruises on Seau's brain.

Belcher did not have an extensive injury history, though he was listed as having a head injury on a report from Nov. 11, 2009. Belcher played four days later against the Oakland Raiders.

Earlier this year, the NFL provided a grant to help establish an independently operated phone service that connects players, coaches, team officials and other staff with counselors trained to work through personal and emotional crises. The NFL Life Line is available 24 hours a day.

The season has been a massive disappointment for the Chiefs, who were expected to contend for the AFC West title. They're 1-10 and mired in an eight-game skid marked by injuries, poor play and fan upheaval. During the past few weeks there have been constant calls for Pioli and Crennel to be fired.

It's unknown how the Chiefs plan to pay tribute to Belcher during Sunday's game.

"His move to the NFL was in keeping with his dreams," said Jack Cosgrove, who coached Belcher at Maine. "This is an indescribably horrible tragedy."

Buried in boxes: New York doormen swamped by online holiday sales

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Record-breaking online sales this holiday shopping season are sending an avalanche of packages to New York City, where apartment building doormen are working hard to keep smiling amid the deluge.

With the arrival of the boxes coinciding with the year-end tipping season, that good cheer can translate into welcome cash.

"Wow! Look at all these boxes!" said doorman Ray Flores, 56, with a big grin as he waded through packages stacked thigh-high in the mail room of The Normandy, a 257-apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

This year's early holiday buying frenzy started with a bang as shoppers rang up nearly 17 percent more online sales on so-called Black Friday, compared with last year, and 30 percent more on so-called Cyber Monday, the biggest internet purchasing day in history.

Laden with those purchases, fleets of United Parcel Service vans, FedEx Corp trucks and United States Postal Service vehicles are pulling up to city buildings to disgorge their haul.

The daily load won't lighten until the last wave of unwanted gifts is returned in the new year.

"In the past few years, it's increasing and increasing and increasing, and this year, it's way up," said Michael Crespo, 65, a doorman at the Dorchester on the Upper West Side, where he said daily deliveries have quadrupled in the past week.

Around the corner, doorman David Morales, 38, said deliveries have doubled since the holiday buying began.

"It gets messy," said Morales, saying the mounting deliveries will soon spill out into his usually tidy lobby.

"If it rains or snows and they're wet, that's worse," added Billy Roman, 46, doorman at The Clarendon nearby, where he said deliveries have increased 60 percent in recent days.

Christmas morning is still weeks away, but gifts in the U.S. city with the nation's largest Jewish population are already pouring in for the start of Channukah on December 8.

"How many days do they have to get presents - eight?!" said Roman.

In the most recent year-end tipping season, 25 percent of the apartment owners in doorman buildings reported handing out tips of $1,000 or more, compared to 10 percent of renters in doorman buildings, according to a 2011 survey conducted by brickunderground.com, a New York City real estate website.

The year-end gratuities come on top of the average $20.76 hourly wage earned by the city's 12,800 doormen, concierges, porters and elevator operators, said Maia Davis, spokeswoman for 32BJ, the largest building workers union in the city.

Some doormen said they are confident that apartment dwellers recognize what a big impact the click of a mouse can have on their building doorman's daily duties.

"The residents say, 'Hey Ray, you got a lot of work,'" said Flores, straightening stacks of boxes from Amazon.com, Zappos.com and other online shopping sites.

"I say, 'Yeah, a lot of work - you ordered all this stuff!"

Still, some 61 percent of apartment renters don't tip their doorman, superintendent or building staff, according to a survey sponsored by Rent.com, a rental listing site.

Real-time Intelligence Reports Max Security Solutions provides intelligence reports for the MENA & Africa Regions

Max Security is now providing a free trial for its real-time Intelligence Reports (http://www.max-security.com/intelligence1). The global security consulting firm is offering qualified individuals from corporations and governments a special opportunity to obtain, for a limited time, detailed reports about threats in the Middle East, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, free of charge. Countries in these regions are volatile, but can hold strong ROI potential for businesses venturing there. Max?s intelligence can help corporations minimize their operating risks there.

Tel Aviv, Israel- (PRWEB) November 27, 2012

Max Security?s Intelligence reports publicize the warning signs, on a country by country basis. According to Max Security Intelligence Director Dor Raveh, ?A Max Security intelligence report highlighted local unrest and security challenges for foreign embassies in Libya weeks before the terrorist attack was carried out on the US Embassy Staff.?

Max?s Intelligence Reports provide a daily and weekly synopsis on security developments for all countries within coverage areas and more in-depth reports for major developments. Countries covered include Egypt, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa and more. Subscribers can expect frequent updates on terror attacks, protests, power outages, natural disasters, civil strikes, traffic congestion, elections and more.

Yet, Max also offers a more extraordinary service: A customizable set of briefings known as ?Tactical Intelligence Monitoring? (http://www.max-security.com/intelligence1/tactical-intelligence-services). According to Max Security Intelligence Manager Daniel Nisman, ?Tactical Intelligence Monitoring" can include any of the following services: itinerary-based monitoring, coverage for special events and asset monitoring. These reports provide detailed up-to-date news, maps and areas of turbulence. Tactical intelligence updates are an important part of facilitating secure travel and business continuity. Max offers tactical intelligence for high profile visits to large areas of the Middle East, North Africa, Asia and Europe. Max?s services are also very beneficial for companies that have an ongoing presence in unsafe environments and who require both intelligence and security consulting.?

Max Security?s intelligence department has been providing safety, security, and cultural information to multi-national corporations operating in the Middle East for years. ?It?s our job to sniff out the protest, political turmoil, or terror attack before it happens,? exclaimed Ron Gilran, an Intel Manager on the Max team. ?In order to do that, we triangulate between a variety of sources, including social media such as blogs and twitter, local media and ground contacts, to identify any indicator to instability.?

Overall, militancy, terrorism, crime, political protests, natural disasters and infrastructure failures occur more frequently in the MENA and Africa regions. Weak internal security and corruption typically make them far more disruptive to business continuity. Basic travel and bureaucratic obstacles are also more prevalent. However, Max can provide intelligence on simple and complex obstacles alike.

After building a strong reputation and wealth of experience in the corporate sector, Max Security has now increased its coverage areas to include more countries. The company can provide greater flexibility of services and is prepared to provide solutions to the many logistical, cultural, linguistic, and security challenges that corporations and governments face when operating in the Middle East and Africa?s most volatile environments.

According to Nisman, ?In today?s world, all it takes is a caricature in a far-off newspaper for chaos to break loose. Suddenly your business can become a primary target for anger and unrest. Time enables you to make sound decisions. Real-time intelligence reports are your key to determining the situational security measures needed to protect your assets.?

Max?s Intelligence reports are unique due to their ability to pinpoint locations of trouble and even predict them ahead of time. Max is encouraging qualified individuals to sign up for MENA Intelligence Reports and Africa Intelligence Reports to improve their risk management.

About Max Security: Max Security is a global security company with offices in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The company specializes in Intelligence, Executive Protection Services, Security Consulting and Close Protection Training
