A British couple who posted a spoof film clip on YouTube appealing to pop star Craig David to come to their wedding got a shock when the R&B star turned up and sang at the reception.

Theo Coyne, 28, and his bride-to-be Lisa Potter-Dixon, 29, posted the song online in May this year singing about their obsession with David's music.

Set to the soundtrack of the 2000 hit song Seven Days, the clip included a personal plea for the 31-year-old pop star to attend their wedding in the UK.

The couple, who have attended more than 25 Craig David concerts, were stunned when the singer made the 2400km flight from Los Angeles to sing a set at their reception.

David said he was happy to perform after learning that the couple had purchased all his songs and that his music had brought them "closer together after the eight years that they have been a couple".

"Seeing them so happy having me attend & hearing me sing was as emotional for me as it was for them!" David wrote on Instagram.

The couple tweeted their thanks the next day: "Craig!! Thank u! U are the man! You?ll never understand what u being here meant to us. Absolute hero.Mrs.Coyne ;)?, the bride wrote in a post.

Rare View: Green tea extract 'eradicates skin cancer with no side ...

A chemical found in green tea has been used to treat two types of skin cancer, scientists say.

The extract is too weak to make an impact when consumed in tea. However, when applied to cancer cells in the lab it made two-thirds of tumours shrink or disappear.

Scientists at the universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow, who carried out the research, found the extract, known as?epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg),?had no side-effects on other cells or tissue.

They created a cell with EGCg and transferrin, a protein that naturally targets and latches on to the surface of cancer cells, and applied it to tumours.

Tests were done on two types of skin cancer: epidermoid carcinoma which forms scales on the surface of the skin and melanoma which often develops in people who have moles on their skin.

In both studies, 40 per cent of tumours vanished, while 30 per cent of tumours in carcinoma cases and 20 per cent in melanoma cases shrank. A further 10 per cent of melanoma tumours were stabilised, so did not grow or shrink.

Around 10,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with melanoma each year, with the majority women, according to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

Anti-cancer properties of EGCg were established in earlier laboratory tests elsewhere. Scientists at other universities around the world have experimented with it to treat prostate cancer and leukaemia.

Lead researcher Dr Christine Dufes, from the University of Strathclyde, said: 'These are very encouraging results which we hope could pave the way for new and effective cancer treatments.

'When we used our method, the green tea extract reduced the size of many of the tumours every day, in some cases removing them altogether. By contrast, the extract had no effect at all when it was delivered by other means, as every one of these tumours continued to grow.

'This research could open doors to new treatments for what is still one of the biggest killer diseases in many countries.'

The research is published in the medical journal Nanomedicine.

Book on bin Laden raid coming out Sept. 11

NEW YORK (AP) ? A first-hand account of the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden is coming out Sept. 11.

Dutton announced Wednesday that Mark Owen's "No Easy Day" will "set the record straight" on the raid in Pakistan in May 2011.

"Mark Owen" is a pseudonym for the combat veteran who was one of the first fighters to enter bin Laden's third floor hideout and also witnessed his death, according to Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). The co-author, journalist Kevin Maurer, has worked on four previous books.

One senior military official said the manuscript was not shared with special operations officials, to check for possible disclosure of classified information. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the vetting of classified information.

A Brand New BBQ Smoker Grill Must Be Cured ? Food and Drinks

When you think of curing your BBQ smoker grill, then chances are you are thinking about the meat, getting it prepared for that slow cooked goodness. Absolutely that is part of it. You should adequately cure the meat before you smoke it if you would like the best flavor. But that?s not the cure we?re talking about here.

Think of what your smoker is made from. It?s metal. And that metal has been shaped into precision parts by cutting and shaving. When your smoker was made, little shavings, metallic dust and residue were created by the process. That?s an unavoidable part of the development procedure.

The manufacturers of your BBQ smoker grill also took the time to coat and paint the device in order to safeguard it from the elements and rust. Of course for that to take place, they had to make use of some fairly heavy duty chemical substances.

Now consider what happens once the product is completed.

Usually it is located in a stockroom or showroom until you bring it home. Guess what? You now have dust on your product. Shipping crates and boxes contain dust along with other particulates, as well.

Every one of these elements are on your BBQ smoker grill at the time of purchase. Those elements have another feature that they share. As condiments go, all are pretty terrible. These are not the kind of items you want to consume. You spend a good amount of time and money getting those ribs prepared to cook. The additional elements from the grill won?t do anything to improve the flavor. When it comes time for you to eat, you want to taste the tender meat with the wood smokey flavor and the delectable sauce. The menu doesn?t include things like nasty tasting deposits or harmful toxins.

You need a cure for the problem and curing your BBQ smoker grill is the solution.

You want to get rid of the shavings, dust, particles and general grossness that accompany every brand new smoker.

Happily, that?s a relatively easy process. The best way to get rid of unhealthy components is to blast them into oblivion with a healthy amount of heat. You can cure your grill by heating it up, sans meat.

Begin by getting the BBQ smoker grill hot. Get the temperature inside of the smoker up to approximately 400 degrees, and maintain it there for about a half hour. At that time, you can back off the heat a bit. Take it down to approximately 250 degrees and keep it operating for two or three more hours.

The simple process of exposing the smoker to excessive temperatures keeps your first meal from turning into a disaster since the undesirable residue will burn up. Curing your BBQ smoker grill does not take much effort. It is not especially time consuming and it is not really difficult. But that does not imply it?s not necessary.

Before you think about smoking anything, be certain to cure your BBQ smoker grill.

To find out more about what?s available in a BBQ smoker grill including useful information on getting the best BBQ smoker to suit your needs, you?ll want to check out our website at BBQSmokerGrill.org.

Barge traffic stuck on the dwindling Mississippi ? Flue infects hogs at state and county fairs ? Will wind blow Romney down in Iowa? ? Drought hurts Kentucky pumpkin contest

Here is a satellite shot of the Mississippi River (or what's left of it) near Greenville, Mississippi, just a few days ago. You can see the sand bars rising and barges stacked up, waiting for an 11-mile stretch of the river to clear. A barge ran aground earlier in the month and has been blocking traffic. Some 100 barges are waiting to get through the clogged part of the river.

The Federal Communications Commission reported today that 19 million Americans don't have access to broadband Internet connections.?

There's been an improvement in access. Last year the FCC said that 26 million were without broadband.?

"The lack of access continues to hamper rural Americans in particular," reports Roger Yu at USA Today. "About 14.5 million rural Americans ? or 23.7% of 61 million people living in rural areas ? had no fast Internet service offered for their homes. In contrast, only 1.8% Americans living in non-rural areas ? 4.5 million out of 254.9 million ? had no broadband access."

West Virginia had the least amount of broadband access, with 45.9 percent of the state's population lacking fast Internet connection. Montana had 26.7 percent without broadband; South Dakota, 21.1 percent; and Alaska, 19.6 percent.

In California, 35 percent of rural residents couldn't get a broadband connection.

An Election on the Wind ? Will the presidential vote in Iowa depend on wind?

Paul Hammel of the Omaha World-Herald travels east to find that Iowans like their wind power ? and they don't much like Republican Mitt Romney's stance against incentives for wind power development. Romney says wind energy should be able to make it in the market without subsidies.?

?Because the race is so close here, both candidates will try to latch onto any issue that will make a difference with Iowans,? said Dianne Bystrom of Iowa State University, a specialist in political communications. ?In the past, it was ethanol. Now it's wind.?

The tradition in Iowa is for politicians to favor wind energy. Hammel notes that every governor, regardless of party, in the past 20 years has supported wind energy production. And all seven members of the Iowa Congressional delegation favor the federal production credit for wind that Romney opposes.

Now, 20 percent of Iowa's power comes from wind.

Vets' Biggest Challenge ? Two-thirds of veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars say that their greatest challenge is finding a job.?

A study of Iraq/Arghanistan era vets found that 44 percent of veterans said they were not ready to make the transition to civilian life. Half of those surveyed said they needed more education or technical training.

Vets in these wars disproportionately come from rural areas.

Only Two Pumpkins ? How bad is the drought??

A friend just returned from the Kentucky State tells us that there were only two entries in the biggest pumpkin contest. The winner was a 1,074.5 pound pumpkin from Somerset, growth by brothers Jim and John Van Hook. Yes, that's a record.

?It?s kind of sad just to see two? pumpkins, said Anna Lucio, the Agriculture Department official in charge of the contest. But she said it was indicative of a ?really, really tough growing season? for fruits and vegetables.

Sick Fair Hogs? ? There's a new strain of flu being passed from pigs to humans and that has caused state fair officials in Minnesota to say the swine exhibits at the state fair should be closed.?

A university official says the number of pig to human infections has been "unprecedented" this year. And since the viruses can change when they cross species, there is the possibility of a widespread health threat. The officials told the Minneapolis newspaper that "we're tempting fate."

The swine flue has infected 200 people in eight states. The flue is mild and primarily affects children who are exposed to pigs at state and county fairs.

The Minnesota fair is expecting 1,000 pigs to arrive at the fairgrounds in the next few days.

Privatized Child Welfare ? In 2009, Nebraska shifted much of the responsibility for running the state's child welfare system to private contractors.

The idea was to save money and make the system more efficient. That didn't happen, according to an article by Kevin O'Hanlon for the Center for Public Integrity.

"In fact, the whole thing was such a dismal failure that state lawmakers passed a sweeping package of bills earlier this year aimed at fixing the system," O'Hanlon wrote.

O'Hanlon explores why Nebraska has a very high percentage of its children in the child welfare system.

One in Four Hungry ? One in four residents of Mississippi said there was at least one time in the past year when they didn't have enough money to buy the food they or their family needed, according to a Gallup poll.?

Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Nevada and Arkansas followed Mississippi. The states with the smallest percentage of residents who didn't have enough money for food were North Dakota (9.6 percent); South Dakota (11.8 percent); Vermont (11.9 percent) and Wisconsin (12 percent).

Greenhut: Even in Bankruptcy, Unions Get Special Treatment

?

People who paid unions bribes for jobs and benefits now what their payoff.? They want ?full? pensions?even if the money does not exist.

Bond companies loaned Stockton $125 million so the city can pay the money?with no ability to pay the bond companies principal or interest.? Now, Stockton has declared bankruptcy and is telling the unions, no problem, your extorted members will get their money.? Then Stockton told the bond holders to pound sand and get lost.

?Now Stockton officials want to stiff Assured Guaranty, the Bermuda-based bond insurance company, for about $103 million. The company?noting that Stockton is going under in part because it can?t make its pension payments to the California Public Employee?s Retirement System?argued in a statement, ?If Stockton is disappointed with CalPERS? investment performance, it should be taking that up with CalPERS rather than reneging on the city?s obligation to holders of the pension bonds.?

The good news is that no one will buy another pension obligation bond from a California city.? California governments can not be trusted.

.

?

Even in Bankruptcy, Unions Get Special Treatment

The pension-debt time bomb detonates in bankruptcy court.

Steven Greenhut, Reason, 8/17/12

Municipal bonds have long been among the safest investments, but a coming wave of municipal bankruptcies in California?and the disturbing way one of those cities is stiffing its bondholders?could change perceptions about such bonds? safety.

The struggling port city of Stockton has declared bankruptcy after a spending spree where officials granted workers an absurdly generous lifetime medical care benefit, dramatically increased pensions, and floated debt to finance dubious downtown redevelopment projects.

When the city couldn?t make its pension payments in 2007, it borrowed $125 million in bonds to cover the mess it created by its pension increases. Now the city government is as upside-down as many of its homeowners and officials are blaming the foreclosure crisis, conveniently neglecting that the current reduction in property tax revenue has come after years of dramatic increases in such revenue.

Now Stockton officials want to stiff Assured Guaranty, the Bermuda-based bond insurance company, for about $103 million.

Stockton?s city manager Bob Deis accused the company of ?bad faith? and ?whining? even as he whined that Assured Guaranty doesn?t care about anarchy in Stockton?s streets, as the city?s crime rate soars after police cutbacks.

But it?s not the fault of lenders that city officials are so unconcerned about the safety of their residents that they continually put the demands of wealthy pensioners above the needs of local residents. Like many cities in this state, Stockton?s infrastructure is crumbling as officials serve mainly as benefit providers to those who work for the city or who are retired from city government.

Deis?s statement is the equivalent of a wastrel who spent 10 years running up debt on luxurious living, then got mad at his bank for wanting to get paid back: ?Hey, you don?t care that I can?t feed my kids!?

Of course, it?s hard to top the arrogance of the scandal-plagued CalPERS, which has responded to Assured Guaranty?s complaints by insisting that ?obligations owed to the public workers of the city have priority? over creditors such as Assured Guaranty. CalPERS also insists the media is ?hyping? the idea that pension promises have anything to do with cities going belly up. CalPERS, which in 1999 advocated retroactive pension increases based on assumed rates of returns that essentially required the Dow Jones to reach 25,000 by 2009, is backed by taxpayers whether its projections are right or wrong.

As cities run out of money and pension obligations grow, we will increasingly see officials faced with a choice between protecting city workers or taxpayers. It?s not hard to understand why the politically powerful CalPERS is so confident that the demands of public employees always come first.

As the Stockton Record reported recently, CalPERS ?dwarfs all other creditors with a $245 million liability in the city over the next decade. Yet National Public Finance Guarantee Corp., an insurer of several Stockton bonds, contends in its court papers that CalPERS is conspicuously missing from the list of those Stockton engaged in pre-bankruptcy negotiations ? .?

That company argues persuasively that the city never had any intention to seek reduced payments from CalPERS. In bankruptcy, the company or city runs out of money and then the creditors fight it out. Here, it seems like city officials cherry-picked which debtors to stiff, which certainly backs the company?s case that Stockton officials have showed bias and that this is a distortion of the bankruptcy process.

While the bond markets aren?t yet spooked, they do have reason for concern given that pension debts are growing, and there are few other places to trim if public employee retirement plans are off the table. Even the feds are sounding some warning bells. As Bloomberg reported last month, ?The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said it plans to seek power to force better disclosures from states and cities participating in the $3.7 trillion municipal-bond market.? They should add this disclosure: Your retirement investments will always lose out to public employee pension demands.

Those of us who have viewed Chapter 9 bankruptcy as a useful option to help troubled cities get their books in order have miscalculated. Public employee unions and their allies in the courts and the retirement systems are so powerful that even during dire financial circumstances, their selfish demands trump everything else. Although bankruptcy can be a good tool, as Orange County?s 1994 bankruptcy made clear, the process is no panacea for incorrigibly wasteful, union-controlled local governments.

The crisis is not going away, despite CalPERS? insistence otherwise. Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, for instance, said earlier in the week that the state?s largest city faces ?disaster? if officials there don?t fix LA?s pension system.

We should closely watch the unfolding proceedings in bankruptcy court, as Stockton goes through this process. But the more significant battle is in San Jose, as courts determine whether voters? support for a June pension reform measure that cuts pensions for existing workers is legal. The key there is the battle over cutting pensions for current workers, given that cuts to new hires only will not defuse the pension-debt time bomb.

If the courts side with reformers, there may be hope for rolling back pension costs and saving city services. If not, Californians better get ready for higher taxes and fewer municipal services, given that there are precious few options left. And without a reform path that touches pensions for existing workers, investors might want to rethink the long-term safety of their bond holdings, which will become an even bigger target.

Two German tourists, two pilots killed in Kenya air crash

Two German tourists and two pilots were killed when their airplane crashed Wednesday in Kenya's renowned Maasai Mara national park, with at least three other tourists badly injured, police said.

"Four people died on the spot, while three others were seriously wounded," said local police chief Peterson Maelo. "Those injured have been taken to Nairobi for treatment."

A total of five Germans, four Americans and two Czechs were reported on board the aircraft.

Catherine Ochola from Flying Doctors Service -- an air ambulance service said three "more critical patients" had been flown to Nairobi. A second air ambulance airplane rescued other passengers, and the rest by Kenya's air force.

The pilots' nationalities were not known.

Michael Koikai, a warden with Kenya Wildlife Service, said that the plane had crashed shortly after takeoff from the Ngerende airstrip around midday.

Kenya Civil Aviation Authority official Mutia Mwandwika said the plane belonged to the local air company, Mombasa Air Safari. A company official confirmed the crash but did not provide further details.

The aircraft, a Czech-made twin-turbo propeller LET-410, can carry between 17 and 19 passengers.

The Maasai Mara, some 250 kilometres (155 miles) southwest of the capital Nairobi, is one of Kenya's most popular safari destinations for its currently ongoing annual migration of wildebeest, attracting tens of thousands of tourists to the park.

Wildebeest, zebras and gazelles cross rivers infested with crocodiles as part of an annual migration within the region.

Many tourists choose to fly into hotels or luxury tented camps landing on simple dirt airstrips, rather than brave the long drive on often poor roads from Nairobi.

It stretches for over 1,5000 square kilometres along the border with Tanzania -- forming a single ecosystem with the neighbouring Serengeti -- and in 2011 hosted nearly 300,000 visitors, generating some $30 million in revenue, according to official figures.

Android @ IFA 2012!

Android Central

Image: James Cridland

IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) is an annual consumer electronics show held in Berlin, Germany, which often serves as a launching platform for smartphone and tablet manufacturers. Think of it as a mini-Mobile World Congress. Last year’s IFA hosted the launch of the original Samsung Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab 7.7, as well as the Xperia Arc S from Sony and two new Windows phones from HTC. This year’s event officially runs from Aug. 31 to Sep. 5, but many of larger announcements will be made in the couple of days before IFA officially kicks off.

IFA 2012’s most significant Android announcements are expected to come from Samsung, which is preparing to take the wraps off its Galaxy Note 2. But we’re also anticipating new smartphones and tablets from Sony and others.

Android Central will be on the ground at IFA to bring you full coverage of the show's events. Keep watching this page for all the latest developments!
