FAMILY BUSINESS CONSULTING

Today?s struggling economy has affected many businesses, especially those that are family owned and operated. Demographics, technology and economics are now converging problems, leaving businesses with questions like ?where did all the baby boomers go?,? ?how can I compete with technology?,? and ?how do we battle external challenges?? ?

Is there a successful way to guide your family business through tough and changing times? Of course! Here are a couple of steps to follow to help guide your business in the right direction, courtesy of financialpost.com.

Step 1: Ask a few questions ? Is your business stable? Figure it out by asking a few question like, ?Are we generating or burning through cash?? ?Are we losing key internal resources through competition, or market obsolescence eliminating lines of business or key staff departures?? ?Is the business value flat, increasing or declining?? ?Are there key things the business needs to add to remain stable?? and ?Will investments need to be made just to maintain the business?? ?

What type of questions do you ask when evaluating your business??

Step 2: Companies that are currently unstable, should use this step to figure out who really owns the business.

?The stark reality is it is that person?s sole responsibility to stabilize the business. This could involve injecting money into the business or other hard choices. This may not be as simple as looking at the shareholder agreement or list of current shareholders with family-owned companies. Until the business is stable, you can?t look too far into the future generations seeking responsibility to address current challenges,? (FinancialPost.com).

This is at the core of most problems plaguing many western countries: no one wants to own the problem of ?crushing debt burdens and social decline,? therefore, no one is truly invested in solving it (FinancialPost.com).

To break this vicious cycle, the actual owners of the business must work to stabilize the business and solve the current challenges. Why is this important? ?Passing on an unstable business to the next generation is equivalent to tossing them a grenade after the pin has been pulled,? (FinancialPost.com).

Is there a problem you've been avoiding to correct because it doesn't directly concern your future? Is there an issue someone higher up is refusing to address??

Step 3: Create a decision-making mechanism by any means. ?Once the state of the business is understood and the decision making body is assembled, how does this group make decisions to attain stability? Unanimous agreement? Democratically, one person one vote? Or corporately, one share one vote? Or does one person or camp take control, either with the acquiescence of the others or in a more hostile situation?? (FinancialPost.com).

Don?t allow your company to become paralyzed and end up a victim of circumstance. Hard to specify what movement is needed, but decisions need to be made, and there is no perfect template ? figure out what works best for your structure.

How does your business make decisions? Who holds the most weight, or is every one's voted equally weighed? Does your company have a decision-making mechanism already in place? ?

Do you think these tips can help your family business? Answer our questions and let us know on our Facebook page, linked HERE.

North Carolina retirees lost at least $4.1 million on Facebook, state discloses

North Carolina?s retirement system has seen the value of its Facebook investment plummet at least $4.1 million, according to newly filed legal documents.

The state?s retirement system last week joined a class-action lawsuit against the social networking site and its underwriters, including Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, that alleges the companies misrepresented Facebook?s initial public stock offer earlier this year. The original lawsuit was filed in May.

But the full extent of North Carolina?s exposure to the company?s dwindling stock value only became clear in court documents filed Aug. 9 in a New York federal court. The state disclosed the loss as it fights to be named among the lead plaintiffs in the case.

?Facebook and its underwriters told one thing to the public, but shared the real facts with only a few select investors on Wall Street,? State Treasurer Janet Cowell said in a statement. ?Our goal is to recover our pension fund?s financial damages.?

The state pension fund ? valued at $75.9 billion March 31 ? provides retirement benefits for 850,000 current and former state workers.

The fund bought 685,737 shares of Facebook stock May 17 at the initial price of $38 a share, according to documents from the state treasurer?s office. The state?s stock portfolio managers then sold a small portion of the $26 million investment the next day, making about $215,000. But the stock dropped nearly 20 percent in the first two days and now sits at nearly half its original value. The state?s reported $4.1 million unrealized loss is a legal calculation and the total amount could be much larger. At the time of the filing last week, the state still held about 618,000 shares of Facebook stock, records show. Facebook?s stock closed Friday at $19.05, down eight-tenths of 1 percent for the day.

North Carolina argues in court documents that it deserves the preferred status as lead plaintiff because it suffered the biggest loss, by a wide margin, among the investors seeking to direct the lawsuit. The New York law firm Bernstein Litowitz Berger and Grossmann is representing the state.

But a competing law firm is raising questions about whether North Carolina can serve as lead plaintiff given the state treasurer?s ties to Facebook and Morgan Stanley board member Erskine Bowles, a defendant in the suit.

Attorney David Rosenfeld with law firm Robbins Geller Rudman and Dowd wrote in court documents that Cowell and the state pension fund ?maintain significant personal and financial ties? with Bowles, a prominent Democrat who is the former head of the UNC system and two-time U.S. Senate candidate.

The filings assert that Bowles? firm Carousel Capital manages millions of dollars in the state pension fund and Bowles wife, Crandall, was a fundraiser for Cowell?s campaign. Cowell?s office did not respond Friday to questions about Bowles. The state?s attorney expects to file a response early next week.

Police in Bangalore, India, arrest 6 on charges including false text statements linked to exodus - @timesofindia

BANGALORE: Cracking the whip in the wake of exodus of people from the northeast, the Karnataka government today arrested six persons on charges of attack, intimidation and sending "false" SMSs to people of the region.

Police have also detained some others for questioning, Karnataka deputy chief minister and home minister R Ashoka told reporters amid continuing exodus of northeasterners to their home states following fear of reprisals in the wake of Assam violence.

Ashoka said the number of people leaving the state had also come down today compared to the past two days.

He said the government had ensured tight security in areas having large population of the northeast community and there was no cause for worry.

Ashoka warned against harassing people from the northeast and said they will be punished as per the law.

Two Assam Ministers - transport minister Chandan Brahma and agriculture minister Nilamoni Sen Deka - told reporters that they were impressed by the steps taken by the Karnataka government to safeguard the interests of people from northeast. There was no need for them to panic and the state was safe to stay, they said.

Brahma thanked the Karnataka government for rushing to the help of the people from Assam and other states in the northeast.

"The government is very much in command of the situation and there is no cause for alarm for my people. Karnataka is a beautiful state and it is safe for them to continue their studies or work," he said.

He said all those who had gone home will gradually return in one to four weeks time.

Deka said the Assam government has requested the parents of students studying in Karnataka not to pressure them to come home.

Newt Gingrich to host ?policy workshops? at GOP convention

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will host a series of ?public policy workshops for delegates? at the Republican National Convention later this month in Tampa, Fla.

A convention press release said that the 2012 presidential contender?s sessions would allow delegates to ?brush up on the policy and U.S. history behind the GOP platform? and that the ?daily sessions? would be taught by Gingrich.?

"The goal is to prepare the American people with the facts to dispel myths and misinformation," said convention Chief Executive Officer William Harris, in the statement. "Speaker Gingrich is one of our party's most effective communicators, which is why he was asked to lead this effort."

Gingrich sought the GOP nomination this year, but exited after winning the South Carolina and Georgia primaries. His hopes of a Southern strategy rallying conservative voters disaffected with Romney fell short as he was heavily outspent by the former Massachusetts governor.

Gingrich has not been offered a convention speaking role in Tampa.

Earlier this week, the Republican National Committee announced that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would deliver the keynote and freshman Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) would introduce presumptive GOP Nominee Mitt Romney.

Christie and Rubio will be joined by many other prominent speakers at the GOP convention, in Tampa, Fla., including Arizona Sen. John McCain, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Romney skips swing states to raise more money

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is spending much of this week in Alabama, South Carolina, Massachusetts and New York. He plans visits next week to Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico.

These states have one thing in common: None is seriously contested in the presidential race, so there's no real need to woo their voters. Romney is going solely to raise money, which remains a top priority even with the election less than 12 weeks away and President Barack Obama making extended visits to toss-up states such as Iowa and Ohio.

To be sure, Obama attends numerous fundraisers of his own. And Romney has spent significant time at public campaign events in swing states, and he will do so many times again before Nov. 6.

But the amount of time Romney is devoting to private fundraisers in noncompetitive states is notable. Even when he is in swing states, he sometimes attends only a fundraiser, without mingling with nondonors or appearing before local TV cameras, as he did Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C.

Romney is pouring time into fundraisers even though he has outdistanced Obama on that front for months. The former Massachusetts governor reported raising more than $101 million along with the Republican National Committee in July. Obama's campaign and Democratic National Committee raised $75 million for the month.

Romney's money advantage is expanded by technically independent groups flooding airwaves with ads criticizing Obama. Two pro-GOP super PACS ? Restore Our Future and American Crossroads ? have raised more than $122 million since the beginning of last year. Democratic-leaning groups Priorities USA Action and American Bridge 21st Century have raised about $30 million in that time.

Obama recently told voters, "Over the course of the next three months, the other side is going to spend more money than we have ever seen on ads that basically say the same thing you've been hearing for the past three months: The economy is not where it needs to be, and it's Obama's fault."

The candidate with the most money and TV ads doesn't necessarily win elections, and most polls suggest Obama holds a slight lead among voters. For now, at least, Romney's team has decided that pouring much of his time into fundraising is more valuable than another quick visit to Colorado, Florida or the other eight or 10 competitive states.

Romney, who made millions of dollars heading the private equity firm Bain Capital, is skilled at extracting money from supporters.

His Wednesday midday event in Charlotte drew more than 100 people who paid between $2,500 and $50,000 each, netting his campaign about $1.5 million. That night, a somewhat larger crowd at a swank club overlooking Birmingham, Ala., generated more than $2 million, campaign aides said.

A midday event Thursday in Greenville produced $1.7 million, and Romney held other fundraisers Thursday night in Boston. He has similar events scheduled this weekend and for much of next week.

The strategy is keeping him away from public events in competitive states for five straight days, barring a change in plans this weekend. He made a major speech in Ohio on Tuesday before diving into a long string of fundraisers in various states.

Some campaign strategists say the Obama and Romney camps have so much money that they can saturate the airwaves in competitive states, and further fundraising amounts to overkill.

Texas-based GOP consultant Matt Mackowiak disagrees. He said Romney himself must attend fundraisers if he expects people to fork over as much as $50,000. "You're not going to be successful with a surrogate," he said.

Soon Romney will need time to devote big amounts of time to preparing for his three debates with Obama, and final-sprint campaigning, Mackowiak said, "so they're trying to pack in the fundraising before Labor Day."

Top-tier donors get private time to chat with Romney, out of reporters' sight. Those giving less money attend larger gatherings in which Romney gives a basic speech emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurs who create jobs.

He has been greatly impressed by "the power of individuals, the power of a citizen, a person, to change things for the better," he told the Greenville luncheon group.

Romney managed to stay in the news this week by taking reporters' questions Thursday in South Carolina, where he was pressed about his personal tax returns. Like Obama, he often grants interviews, by satellite, to local TV stations in swing states.

Next stop? A fundraiser Friday at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Tips And Tricks For Accomplishing Home Improvement Projects |

17-08-2012 by admin

It is not always necessary to hire a professional to handle home improvement projects. This article contains information that will help you complete do-it-yourself projects in your home. Implement the tips mentioned, and you?ll be on your way to improving your home.

Handy items you need to have are ladders, the right belt of bag for working, a good metric ratchet set, chisels and also reliable rubber mallet. They may not be essential, but they sure make things easier.

Do you want a cheap way to add a bit of class in your house? There are many little changes you can make around the house, but the simple act of putting in a new doorbell assembly can add a huge change with little work. If you do that, visitors will automatically have a new sense of your house.

To spruce up the outside of your home, try painting it. Paint is both protective and appealing. The key to making this a successful home improvement is to choose your colors wisely.

Install a peephole in your door. It is helpful to be able to see who is on the other side of the door before you open it up. Installing a peephole is a simple, inexpensive home improvement project. You only need a drill and some time. Doing this will make it so that you can ensure that you do not open the door for someone that may not be welcome.

Allocating the funds now to increase the insulation in your dwelling will usually save money long term. Older homes especially are way under insulated. Putting additional material into attics and crawl spaces can reduce utility expenses and generate substantial savings well into the future.

It is important to develop a reasonable timetable for completion of your next project; you should also consider the lifespan of certain improvements and upgrades. A brand new chimney, for example, can last upwards of a hundred years. Wooden decks may only be useful for about 15 years. Various types of flooring can last anywhere from 20 years (vinyl) to 100 years (oak). Make sure to consider factors such as these prior to getting involved in a home improvement project.

With any luck, the information you?ve just read will help you in your future projects. Your decision to read this article probably means you?re nearing the first stages of a new project. You can do these repairs without a contractor and end up with results you can be happy with.

Measure of US economy rose 0.4 percent in July

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A measure of future U.S. economic activity recovered in July following a sharp drop in June, providing further evidence of an economy that is regaining some momentum.

The Conference Board said Friday that its index of leading economic indicators increased 0.4 percent in July after falling 0.4 percent in June.

The July strength came from an improvement in a number of components with the largest contributions coming from a big jump in applications for housing permits and declines in applications for unemployment benefits.

The rebound last month put the index at 95.8, matching its May level, which had been the highest reading in four years.

Economists viewed the July result as evidence that the economy has regained its footing after a sluggish spring that had raised concerns that the country could be in danger of slipping into another recession.

"The expansion continues, no double-dip recession, just continued moderate, sub-par growth," said John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo.

He said he was looking for economic growth of around 1 percent to 2 percent at an annual rate in the current July-September quarter. The economy slowed to growth at a rate of just 1.5 percent in the April-June quarter after growing at a 2 percent pace in the first three months of this year.

The gain in the leading indicators was the latest report showing an improved outlook. This week, there were reports that factory production increased in July and homebuilders were growing more confidence in the housing recovery. Earlier, the government reported that job growth rose to 163,000 for July, the best showing in five months.

The index of leading indicators is a compilation of 10 forward pointing indicators.

For the six months ending in July, the index has been rising at an annual rate of 2.3 percent which is an improvement over the 0.6 percent annual rate of growth turned in during the previous six months.

NBA Picks: Eastern Conference Odds & Predictions

With the NBA season right around the corner, who are the NBA odds makers favoring in the Eastern Conference? Can the Miami Heat pull off hte repeat or will someone else step up to dethrone the reigning champions?

Believe it or not, we are just over two months away from the tip off of the NBA season, I know; it seems like just yesterday that the Heat won the title, but with the Olympics breaking up the offseason for NBA bettors, we are just seven weeks away from the start of the preseason. Wow, let?s take a look at which teams I think will shape out the playoffs for 2012-2013.

  1. Miami Heat

Miami HeatAny surprises here? The Heat were the title favorites until the Dwight Howard trade, but either way, there is no other team in the East that should be favored over the Heat. Miami returns almost their entire roster, and brought in Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis. The Heat will be number one in the East by at least five or six games.

  1. Boston Celtics

The Celtics were one win away from a return to the NBA Finals last season, but they were just too hurt and too tired to beat the Heat one last time. During the offseason, the Celtics have stocked up on great players, and with the Bulls being down this season, the Celtics will be right there at number two.

  1. Philadelphia 76ers

Even before the Andrew Bynum trade, I had the Sixers here with the Bulls being down. Now, there is no doubt that Philadelphia will be in the top three of the East. With their young core and Bynum, dare I say they are a threat to knock off the Heat or Celtics?

  1. Chicago Bulls

It?s been really hard to be a Bulls fan for the past three months. Derrick Rose tore his ACL, the front office gutted their bench (which I actually agree with believe it or not) and the Bulls basically are the Mavs of last season, they are taking the year off in hopes to reload in 2013-2014. However, I still think with the players they have and Tom Thibodeau?s defensive system, they will be a home court advantage team this season in the playoffs.

  1. Brooklyn Nets

With all the players the Nets have been bringing in, they are surely a playoff team, and I have them at number five. They still have to shape up their bench, but with their starting five, this team will be dangerous. They are in my opinion; they are better than their newly found cross town rivals.

  1. New York Knicks

Carmelo AnthonyThe Knicks really underperformed last season, and even after all the controversy with Jeremy Lin this offseason, they still have a pretty good team. They have gotten pretty old, but I doubt they are better than the Nets. They could surprise, but #6 is as high as I see them at this point in the offseason.

  1. Indiana Pacers

The Pacers were a nice surprise last season, and even though their epic amount of trash talking couldn?t get them past the Heat in the second round, this is definitely an up and coming team in the East. However, the East is up and coming as well. They may jump up or down a spot, but they will be a damn good 7th seed if indeed that?s where they end up.

  1. Washington Wizards

Yes, you are reading this correctly; I think the Wizards are a playoff team. I had the pleasure of watching this team live a few times last season, and with the super star potential of John Wall, along with the new guys they have brought in, I like them to grab the 8th spot. Their young guys got a lot of experience, and with the addition of Bradley Beal, Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafur, this team is very dangerous.
