Face-chewing victim details attack in interview

(AP Photo/Miami-Dade Police Dept., File)

(AP) ? A homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre assault alongside a busy South Florida highway told police that his attacker "just ripped me to ribbons."

In a recorded interview with investigators made available Thursday, Ronald Poppo said the man who approached him initially seemed friendly. Then the man, Rudy Eugene, seemed to become angry about something that had happened on Miami Beach, where thousands were partying through the Memorial Day weekend.

"For a while he was acting nice. Then he got flustered. He probably remembered something that happened on the beach and was not happy about it," Poppo told investigators in the interview. It was taped July 19 and first reported Wednesday by Miami news station WFOR-TV.

Poppo said Eugene then "turned berserk" and attacked with his bare hands, screaming that both men would die.

"He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically, that's all there is to say about it," Poppo said.

According to a report by investigators, Poppo told police Eugene walked "out of blue" and said, "You're going to be my wife and this is going to be a Lover's Concerto." Eugene placed him in a headlock and dragged him along the sidewalk, Poppo told investigators.

Poppo recalled Eugene telling him that his Bible was stolen in Miami Beach and that Poppo was the one who took it. Poppo said he told Eugene he did not have anything, had not been to Miami Beach and "did not antagonize the offender in any way," the report said.

Eugene's family has said they can't explain his bizarre behavior. They described him as a mild-mannered and religious person who smoked marijuana.

Poppo, 65, remains in a long-term care facility after losing an eye, his eyebrows, his nose and parts of his forehead and right cheek in the May 26 attack. His other eye was severely damaged.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center said last month that Poppo was in good spirits, talking and walking around, but would need several more surgeries before he could explore the options for reconstructing his face.

Eugene, 31, was shot and killed by a Miami police officer during the attack on the Macarthur Causeway just off downtown Miami. Lab tests found only marijuana in Eugene's system, but no other drugs or alcohol.

Poppo said Eugene had said something about not being able "to score," adding that Eugene "must have been souped up on something."

In the police interview, Poppo sometimes seems confused about some details of the attack. He described Eugene wearing a green shirt and getting out of a car, but surveillance video recorded from security cameras on The Miami Herald building showed a naked Eugene walking up to Poppo as cars and bicyclists zipped by. Poppo was reclining on the sidewalk near the parking garage where he lived.

Police asked Poppo whether he provoked Eugene.

"What could provoke an attack of that type?" Poppo said. "I didn't curse at the guy or say anything mean or nasty."

Poppo also thanked the police for saving his life, saying the officer who shot Eugene arrived in the nick of time. He also said he did not like how he was being portrayed in the news and did not want to speak to the media.

The investigation is ongoing, Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said.

Peyton finally returns to action

Robert Griffin IIIAP

The 2012 NFL preseason officially kicked off last Sunday when the Cardinals faced the Saints in the Hall of Fame Game. One team scored more points than the other, but none of that matters. Preseason won-loss records are thoroughly worthless, Beyond, perhaps, the third exhibition week, as Dennis Green may opine.

So instead of trying to forecast the final scores for tonight?s games, we?ve pinpointed five situations to bear in mind for a better read on what?s happening around the league.

1. Robert Griffin III makes his professional debut.

The Redskins only plan to give Griffin 12-20 snaps on Thursday night, but it will be interesting to see whether he shows signs of pro readiness. The camp buzz in D.C. suggests Griffin has a ways to go, even if he?s picked up his practice play a bit lately. His accuracy has reportedly been erratic, and he?s holding onto the ball too long. Tonight?s Redskins-Bills game kicks off at 7 p.m. eastern. Buffalo made major improvements to its pass rush during the offseason, so RG3 is going to have to get the football out quick if he wants to avoid big hits from Mario Williams and Marcell Dareus.

2. Will Peyton Manning throw deep?

Albert Breer of NFL Network has reported that Manning will play just one or two possessions in Thursday?s 8:30 p.m. preseason opener at Soldier Field. So if you turn on or show up to the game a few minutes late, you might miss him. Reports out of Denver claim Manning has shown precise accuracy on short to intermediate throws, but he hasn?t tested the defense long much in Broncos practice. Can Manning still air it out vertically after four neck surgeries at age 36?

3. The Todd Haley offense ? whatever that is ? shows up in Pittsburgh.

Some folks in Pittsburgh believe the Steelers are installing a run-first, smash-mouth offense, like the system Haley ran in Kansas City. Others think Haley?s offense may be more like his in Arizona, where Kurt Warner was constantly in the shotgun and the Cardinals ranked among the league leaders in pass attempts. The Steelers will be without holdout receiver Mike Wallace tonight, but they?re also not quite flush with elite tailbacks. The first-team offense probably won?t play much, but we?ll still be looking for hints at Haley?s plan of attack. The Steelers face the Eagles at 7:30 p.m.

4. The Bears? offensive line might be an insurmountable obstacle.

Again, starters figure to see minimal action in the preseason opener. But it?s believed annual pass-protection goat J?Marcus Webb has already won Chicago?s starting left tackle job, and the Bears are essentially bringing back all five starters from a group that allowed 49 sacks last season. Perhaps Jay Cutler, Webb, and the rest of the first grouping will only play a series or two, but they?ll still face a significant test. Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil are in town for an 8:30 p.m. game.

5. Camp battles will begin to take shape.

The Redskins? tailback job looks wide open, with Evan Royster attemping to hold off Roy Helu. Patriots back Stevan Ridley appears to have pulled ahead of Danny Woodhead and Shane Vereen with a big camp, but will it translate to games? Emmanuel Sanders will line up in holdout Mike Wallace?s usual ?X? receiver position when Pittsburgh faces Philly. Packers slot receiver Randall Cobb has made some training camp noise and may push for Donald Driver?s spot on the depth chart. Saints undrafted rookie Travaris Cadet will look to build on his big Hall of Fame Game.

Not much of anything will be settled tonight. But, as we witnessed in the preseason opener, camp battles can begin to take form. John Skelton grabbed the early lead in his quarterback competition with Kevin Kolb, while Cadet began to state a strong case for a roster spot in a crowded New Orleans backfield. There are six games tonight. They?re all meaningless in the end, and the starters barely play. But football is back.

And we think that?s pretty awesome.

French court hands Hollande victory with EU pact ruling

PARIS (Reuters) - France's Constitutional Council ruled on Thursday that the EU's budget responsibility pact did not require a change to the constitution, easing its path to ratification and removing a potential headache for President Francois Hollande.

The court's ruling opens the way for Hollande's Socialist government, which had insisted it did not want to write a budgetary rule into the constitution, to implement the pact as soon as September using a "super-law" that requires only a simple majority in parliament.

A constitutional reform would have required a three-fifths majority in a special joint session of parliament and could have entailed an lengthy debate on Europe which could have exposed divisions in Socialist ranks. The party was bitterly split in 2005 over whether to approve the EU Constitution, which was eventually rejected in a national referendum.

Welcoming the decision, Hollande urged his government to press ahead with quickly drafting the legislation.

"The President calls on the government to rapidly prepare a draft law authorizing the ratification of the pact as well as a draft organic law to guarantee the appropriate application of the text," Hollande's office said in a statement.

The fiscal pact, signed in March and committing governments to tight deficit limits, must be ratified by 12 of the 17 euro zone countries before it can come into force in January, with the aim of calming investors concerned at heavy public debts.

The decision by the Council, currently made up of 12 career jurists and former politicians, lifts one uncertainty hanging over the pact's ratification.

Eleven EU member states have ratified the pact, the EU commission said on Thursday, not including Germany, where the Constitutional Court will rule in mid-September on whether it contravenes the German charter.

The Council comprises nine appointees, including judges but also others with political or administrative backgrounds, plus surviving former French presidents, currently three in number.

Of these, conservatives Nicolas Sarkozy, defeated in May by Hollande, and Jacques Chirac were absent. But the third, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, 86, from the center-right, was present. An ideological foe of Hollande, Giscard has strongly promoted EU integration since he held office in the 1970s.

Computer scientists reveal how aquatic Olympic gold is captured -- above and below the surface

ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) ? Computer scientists have isolated the movements of Olympic swimmers and divers through a cutting-edge technique that reveals their motions above and below the water's surface.

The work, conducted by Manhattan Mocap, LLC, together with New York University's Movement Laboratory and The New York Times, analyzes Dana Vollmer, who won three gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, as well as Abby Johnston, who won a silver medal in synchronized diving, and Nicholas McCrory, a bronze medalist in synchronized diving.

The research team, headed by Chris Bregler, a professor in NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, followed these athletes during their training in pools across the United States this spring and deployed ground-breaking motion-capture techniques to unveil their movement above and under the water's surface.

Their work may be viewed here: http://manhattanmocap.com/olympics2012.

Of particular note is the team's creation of a system, AquaCap (TM), which captures underwater motion. It was used to display Vollmer's butterfly stroke and underwater dolphin kick, breaking down the technique the swimmer used to win the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly in world-record time. Through a comparison of motions, the video illustrates how closely Vollmer's kick resembles that of a dolphin swimming through the water.

Subsequent work analyzed Johnston and McCrory, showing through previously unseen angles their summersaults from 3- and 10-meter diving boards and marking another technical breakthrough in motion capture.

Motion capture records movements of individuals, who wear suits that reflect light to enable the recording of their actions. It then translates these movements into digital models for 3D animation often used in video games and movies, such as "Avatar" and "Iron Man." Bregler and his team used a more sophisticated computer-vision technology, which allows for the tracking and recording of these movements straight from video and without the use of motion capture suits.

"Persepolis" director Marjane Satrapi to direct "The Voices"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Marjane Satrapi will direct "The Voices" for Mandalay Vision and Vertigo Entertainment, Mandalay confirmed on Tuesday.

This will be the first English language, live-action film for Satrapi, the director of 2007 animated Oscar nominee "Persepolis." Her first live-action feature, "Chicken with Plums," a French drama, opened overseas last year. Both films are based on graphic novels Satrapi wrote.

"The Voices" is a Black List script written by Michael R. Perry ("Paranormal Activity 2") that details a disturbed factory worker who goes on and off his medications. Told from the man's point of view, it mixes a dark subject matter with comedic notes.

Roy Lee's Vertigo first bought the script, and when Mandalay came aboard, they began looking for directors.

"We got lucky in finding the unique voice of Marjane Satrapi; she is a total visionary," Mandalay Vision president Matt Rhodes told TheWrap. "She is a character-driven, performance-driven filmmaker. The heightened sense of reality that Marjane works in is just perfect for this story."

They will cast the psychological thriller in the coming weeks and view this as a film with commercial potential, especially given the right big-name actor in the lead.

It will start shooting next year at Berlin's Babelsburg film studio, which is where Satrapi shot "Chicken with Plums." The historic studio, setting for films such as "Metropolis" and "The Reader," celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Would David Petraeus say yes to Mitt Romney? Why that's a long shot.

Why Mitt Romney would court the CIA chief and war hero as his pick for running mate is clear. But David Petraeus has said he 'will never be' a politician. 'No way, no how.'?

That is the Drudge report story making a big splash on the web.

Certainly, having General Petraeus ? a decorated and widely respected war hero and military strategist ? as a running mate would be a boon for Romney by boosting his national security credentials.

So it is easy to fathom why Mr. Romney would want Petraeus on his ticket.

But how would Petraeus benefit ? and what are the chances he would say yes?

The odds he would agree to join Romney on the campaign trail are, in a word, slim.

For starters, Petraeus is known to be fiercely protective of his reputation in the media.

A student of strategy, Petraeus is no doubt well aware of how politics can muddy sterling military reputations ? a la General Wesley Clark?s 2004 presidential run after retiring as NATO?s Supreme Allied Commander.

He has also studied the career trajectory of Ulysses S. Grant. He spoke to NBC?s David Gregory in August 2010, noting ?how historians changed their views of Grant over the years, initially, of course, regarding him as the true hero, of course. And then, over time, in the 1900s there was a period when a bit more disparaging views of him, and then it?s actually come up again in recent years.?

Some Republicans, meanwhile, are not so sure he would be an ideal pick.

True, ?Petraeus fulfills the Republicans? perpetual desire for an authoritative father figure,? notes Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain. ?But that?s a psychological issue among Republicans, not an actual job qualification.?

Most tellingly, Petraeus has made no secret of his lack of political ambition.

?I am not a politician, and I will never be, and I say that with absolute conviction,? Petraeus told Mr. Gregory. ?No way, no how.?

The White House, however, remains wary that Petraeus could be lured into a campaign.

Some analysts argued that his appointment as CIA director in September 2011 was the Obama administration?s effort to give Petraeus a job that he would see as a great intellectual challenge ? but that would also keep him out of the spotlight, effectively sidelining him.

Though the Drudge Report Tuesday said President Obama had ?whispered to a top fundraiser? this week that he believed Romney wanted to name Petraeus as his veep and had secretly met with him in New Hampshire, the White House denied the report.

?I can say with absolutely confidence, such an assertion has never been uttered by the president,? White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday. ?And again be mindful of your sources.?

The CIA for its part issued its own disavowal of the report. ?Director Petraeus feels very privileged to be able to continue to serve our country in his current position,? said CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz. ?And as he has stated clearly numerous times before, he will not seek elected office.?

Asbestos-related disease: screening and diagnosis.

Adv Clin Chem. 2012;57:163-85

Authors: Rodr?guez Portal JA

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely aggressive tumor which develops in the epithelial lining of the lungs. Exposure to asbestos is the most influential risk factor for developing this disease. Despite recent advances in the treatment of other types of cancer, patients with mesothelioma currently face a poor prognosis. Therefore, it is highly important to develop an early diagnostic method with the greatest challenge on screening techniques to detect the disease at a subclinical stage. Early detection is critical for the development of more effective therapies in these patients. Unfortunately, radiologic studies have not proven effective. Biomarkers might be a useful adjunct tool among populations previously exposed to asbestos. This review will provide an update of recent progress in serum biomarkers (osteopontin (OPN), soluble mesothelin (SM), and megakaryocyte potentiating factor (MPF)) to diagnose, detect, and monitor MPM. Of these, SM has demonstrated the greatest diagnostic potential although MPF may serve as an equal alternative. Despite recent studies, it is apparent that long-term large-cohort research is required to conclusively demonstrate the usefulness of these markers in this disease.
