The FAA said one of its inspectors noticed a chip in the nose cone of a Boeing 737s on Feb. 25, 2010. According to the FAA, Delta's repair manual requires a fix before the plane is flown, but the Delta plane made 20 more flights. The FAA proposed a civil penalty of $687,500.
The other violation involved an Airbus A320 that the FAA said was flown on 884 flights with a broken dome light socket in the cockpit. The FAA said maintenance procedures required it to be fixed after no more than 10 days. The plane was flown between May 25, 2010, and Jan. 3, 2011, with the broken light socket, according to the FAA, which said it found the issue during a routine inspection. The agency proposed a $300,000 civil penalty for that.
Delta gets 30 days to respond to the FAA's proposed fines. The airline issued a statement saying that neither airplane was ever operated unsafely, and that it "initiated immediate and necessary actions to ensure that the aircraft were in full compliance with the regulatory requirements."
Delta shares rose 36 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $11.08 in afternoon trading. They are approaching their 52-week high of $12.25 set at the end of May.
