Stress Meter

How Comfortable Are You (in your home)?

- Are your energy bills higher than your neighbors?
- Is your home just not comfortable? ?Cool in the winter? ?Warm in the summer?
- Is your indoor air quality less than you would like it to be?
- Could it be that there is nothing wrong with your heating and AC system?
- Do you know that a heating and air conditioning system replacement is imminent?

In the past, air leaks have been ignored unless they were significant enough to feel or see. ?Building scientists have had the tools for assessing air leaks for years, but how many building scientists do you know? ?I predict that since our building codes are getting tighter and the cost of energy will continue to increase, the tools for accessing air leakage will become more prevalent. ?I obtained the tools because I think I can significantly improve the service that we offer. ?I think consumers are unaware of how much they could benefit if someone utilized the tools to identify and quantify the amount of air leakage that is occurring in their homes.

The benefits that you should expect from air leakage testing implementation of improvement measures are:
1. ?KNOWING where the opportunities ?exist for improvement and which ones to attack first.
2. ?Significantly (and possibly, surprisingly) REDUCED ENERGY COST
3. ?Greatly improved COMFORT
4. ?Greatly improved AIR QUALITY
5. ?Minimization of SOUND LEVELS inside your home.?

The quantified results of performance testing remove the mystery of discomfort and high energy bills from an evaluation. ?A benefit assessment of the recommended measures helps you rank the order in which measures should be pursued. ?If you were to receive a strategic plan that provides the peace of mind of ranking the measures that provide the most benefit to you, wouldn?t that be valuable? ?Because I am a heating and air conditioning contractor with many years of experience in energy conservation issues from previous employment with an electric utility, I feel that I am qualified to provide this service. ?And yes, my primary interest is in issues that impact indoor air quality and heating and air conditioning systems.

We can perform a test on your duct system to measure how much duct leakage is occurring.? Did you note that we didn?t say ?IF your duct system is leaking??

All duct systems leak.? The new energy code for new homes that is now in effect (in NC) limits duct leakage to a total of 6% of total air flow.? And the only way to achieve such a low leak rate is to test the duct system immediately after construction and seal the leaks.? If you are not aware that your duct system has been tested?expect at least a 20-30% leak rate, even if you have a newly constructed duct system!?? It is highly probable that 20 ? 30% of the air you are paying to condition (heat or cool) is being wasted in ?outside spaces? ? the attic or the crawl space.? I think it?s evident that sealing duct leaks would be an opportunity for significant energy cost reduction.? We can measure the performance of your duct system (called a ?duct blaster? test) and make the corrections to improve the performance of duct systems.? And we will continue re-testing after corrections are performed so that we will achieve a satisfactory duct leakage rate is (hopefully 10% or less).? Our goal is to reduce duct leaks without?unnecessarily?replacing your existing duct system. ?And it seems to me that if you were considering the replacement of a heating and air conditioning system, having the duct system tested would be required before a replacement occurred!

A blower door provides the capability to measure how much air from outside your home is entering from undesired areas.? If the door(s) are not open and the windows are closed, outside air entering from the crawl space, garage, or attic could be the sources of concern.? These types of sources are identified as unwanted infiltration.? Don?t get me wrong, for air quality reasons houses need to breathe and some infiltration is a good thing, as long as it is not excessive and is not entering from contaminated spaces like attics, crawl spaces, or garages.? Do you suspect that you live in a house that is not constructed as tightly as it could be?? A whole house, measured, air leakage test is known as a ?blower door? test and can be very revealing when the amount of air entering you home is measured and then compared to the amount of air entering a well-constructed home.? And there are ways to determine where leaks (if they do exist) occur.? And we will show you where they exist.? I encourage you to think about how these reductions would impact your energy bills, improve indoor air quality, and make your home a quieter place to live in if those leaks were prevented.

If you have read this far, I think it?s fair to assume you ARE interested in this service. ?If you should call another heating and air conditioning contractor for heating and AC service, ask ?if air leak testing is provided and if provided, what tools are used to provide the service.
? If you do not hear ?Blower Door? or ?Duct Blaster?, they are not equipped to provide the service.
? If you hear ?Duct Blaster? only, they can only test for duct leaks.
? If you hear ?Blower Door? only, they can only provide an estimate of duct leakage. ?Only with a ?Duct Blaster? can identification of air leaks be properly identified.

I think it will be unlikely that you find a heating and air conditioning contractor that provides the service that we can. ?Of course you could call a building scientist, if you know one?Calling to receive this service after you come home for work is OK with us (DARK air can be measured too). ?Call us at 910-5749-8866. ?We pledge to present test results that would comply with Jack Webb?s (of the Dragnet TV show from years gone by) criteria ? ?Just the Facts?.

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 01:14:17 -0800 Tissue engineers report knee cartilage repair success with new biomaterial http://okefsui.posterous.com/tissue-engineers-report-knee-cartilage-repair http://okefsui.posterous.com/tissue-engineers-report-knee-cartilage-repair

Jan. 14, 2013 ? In a small study, researchers reported increased healthy tissue growth after surgical repair of damaged cartilage if they put a "hydrogel" scaffolding into the wound to support and nourish the healing process. The squishy hydrogel material was implanted in 15 patients during standard microfracture surgery, in which tiny holes are punched in a bone near the injured cartilage. The holes stimulate patients' own specialized stem cells to emerge from bone marrow and grow new cartilage atop the bone.

Results of the study, published in the Jan. 9 issue of Science Translational Medicine, are a proof of concept that paves the way for larger trials of the hydrogel's safety and effectiveness, the researchers say.

"Our pilot study indicates that the new implant works as well in patients as it does in the lab, so we hope it will become a routine part of care and improve healing," says Jennifer Elisseeff, Ph.D., Jules Stein Professor of Ophthalmology and director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Translational Tissue Engineering Center (TTEC). Damage to cartilage, the tough-yet-flexible material that gives shape to ears and noses and lines the surface of joints so they can move easily, can be caused by injury, disease or faulty genes. Microfracture is a standard of care for cartilage repair, but for holes in cartilage caused by injury, it often either fails to stimulate new cartilage growth or grows cartilage that is less hardy than the original tissue.

Tissue engineering researchers, including Elisseeff, theorized that the specialized stem cells needed a nourishing scaffold on which to grow, but demonstrating the clinical value of hydrogels has "taken a lot of time," Elisseeff says. By experimenting with various materials, her group eventually developed a promising hydrogel, and then an adhesive that could bind it to the bone.

After testing the combination for several years in the lab and in goats, with promising results, she says, the group and their surgeon collaborators conducted their first clinical study, in which 15 patients with holes in the cartilage of their knees received a hydrogel and adhesive implant along with microfracture. For comparative purposes, another three patients were treated with microfracture alone. After six months, the researchers reported that the implants had caused no major problems, and MRIs showed that patients with implants had new cartilage filling an average 86 percent of the defect in their knees, while patients with only microfracture had an average of 64 percent of the tissue replaced. Patients with the implant also reported a greater decrease in knee pain in the six months following surgery, according to the investigators.

The trial continues, has enrolled more patients and is now being managed by a company called Biomet. The trial is part of efforts to win European regulatory approval for the device.

In the meantime, Elisseeff says her team has begun developing a next-generation implant, one in which the hydrogel and adhesive will be combined in a single material. In addition, they are working on technologies to lubricate joints and reduce inflammation.

Other authors on the study were Blanka Sharma, Sara Fermanian, Matthew Gibson, Shimon Unterman, Daniel A. Herzka, Jeannine Coburn and Alexander Y. Hui of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Brett Cascio of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital; Norman Marcus, a private practice orthopedic surgeon; and Garry E. Gold of Stanford University.

The Physics of Wall Street: A Brief History of Predicting the Unpredictable
by James Owen Weatherall
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2013 (($27))

Weatherall, a doctoral student in physics and math at the time of the 2007?2008 financial crisis, delves into the question of how physics and finance came together. In clear, lively prose, he traces the evolution of the mathematical ideas behind derivatives and hedge funds, from the early papers of a student working on the floor of the Paris Bourse at the end of the 19th century to the late fractal geometry founder Beno?t Mandelbrot's thoughts on the randomness of cotton prices. Weatherall argues that the blame for the financial collapse lies not with sophisticated mathematical models but with those who misused them. Economists and physicists must work together to prevent future crises.

Sat, 12 Jan 2013 02:26:15 -0800 Golf Channel will broadcast Sony Open after race against clock http://okefsui.posterous.com/golf-channel-will-broadcast-sony-open-after-r http://okefsui.posterous.com/golf-channel-will-broadcast-sony-open-after-r

HONOLULU ? Thanks to a lot of hard work, a little luck and plenty of serendipity, the opening round of the Sony Open will be broadcast on Golf Channel, beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.

It almost didn?t happen.

END: #fbshare

With three days of suspensions and cancellations forcing a Tuesday finish at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, there were plenty of logical issues to overcome in order to televise this week?s event on the island of Oahu. The final-round broadcast finished at about 1 p.m. local time Tuesday, whereupon all of the trucks, cameras and other equipment were loaded onto a barge that left Maui that night. The barge arrived in Honolulu at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, then everything reached Waialae Country Club by 3:30.

From there, it was a race against the clock, as a crew of 90 technicians worked late into Wednesday night and were back first thing Thursday morning to ensure the broadcast would take place as scheduled.

?Typically, setup takes three days,? explained longtime NBC-Golf Channel lead producer Tommy Roy, who produced both the Hyundai tournament and is producing the Sony Open. ?They?ve obviously done this in a lot less time.?

Roy credited the crew for its ability to turn three days of work into less than one.

?There are two key things that has made this happen,? he said. ?One is the yeoman effort of everyone involved. And the second is that we have our regular truck. If we were coming over here without this truck, there?d be no way we?d be coming on the air with any coverage [Thursday].?

There are concessions that have been made. Rather than a full staff of cameras, Roy asked to have those on the ninth, 17th?and 18thholes set up first, with RF cameras ? those which can move freely throughout the course ? used elsewhere, though more have been ?popping up thanks to their hard work? throughout the day.

Yes, that would be throughout Thursday ? during the opening round. Throwing another wrench in the plan is that much of the setup has been accomplished while players are competing on the course, which is typically not the case.

Of course, all of this should lead to one final question from viewers at home: Will we be able to tell the difference?

?Well, that?s my goal,? Roy said. ?Hopefully the viewers and the PGA Tour and the sponsor Sony can?t tell the difference. I think we?re in pretty good shape to make that happen.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Following an election when Latinos showed their growing political influence, a coalition of groups is coordinating a gathering of top Latino entertainers at the Kennedy Center in a series of events ahead of President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Eva Longoria, George Lopez, Mario Lopez, Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno are among a group of prominent performers who will gather Sunday, Jan. 20 for "Latino Inaugural 2013: In Performance at the Kennedy Center." Details of the tribute performance were announced Tuesday.

Longoria, a co-chair of Obama's inauguration festivities, is hosting the event. Additional performers will include Jose Feliciano, Melanie Griffith, New York City's Ballet Hispanico, Coro de Ninos de San Juan (the San Juan Children's Choir) and others.

In a statement, the former "Desperate Housewives" star said the inaugural events will foster more Latino engagement in Washington.

"Latinos played a critical role in this year's elections and helped tip the scales in President Obama's victory. But we are not waiting another four years to make an impact on our country's future," she said. "What better way to establish our presence at these inaugural celebrations than by showcasing the beauty and diversity of our culture at the nation's premier performing arts center."

The Latino inaugural gathering is driven in part by organizers of The Futuro Fund, which helped mobilize Latino support for the Obama-Biden re-election campaign. Millions of Hispanic voters turned out with 71 percent support for Obama. Republican candidate Mitt Romney's 27 percent Hispanic support was less than any presidential candidate in 16 years, drawing calls for Republicans to rethink their approach to Latinos.

Andres Lopez, a San Juan, Puerto Rico attorney and activist who was a national chairman of the election effort, said Latinos represent the nation's future.

"The story of Latinos is the story of America," he said. "Latinos made history in a big way this presidential election, and we look forward to writing the next chapter of this amazing story over the next four years."

The Kennedy Center is presenting the event with no charge to the organizers in two of its large theaters. The events come as the cultural center has been criticized for excluding Latinos from its high-profile Kennedy Center Honors.

Tickets went on sale Tuesday at the Kennedy Center box office, starting at $300 for the live performance in the center's Opera House and $150 for a simulcast in the center's Eisenhower Theater. A party will follow the show on the eve of Obama's public swearing in. It was not clear whether Obama would attend.

It's part of a three-day series of lectures and events focused on Latino issues. Coordinators include the National Council of La Raza and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

San Antonio philanthropist and business leader Henry Munoz III, who is coordinating the entertainment event with Longoria and Andres Lopez, said Latinos deserve a place at the center of U.S. culture.

"The Kennedy Center is our nation's theater," he said. "As we inaugurate President Barack Obama, it is important to recall what President John F. Kennedy knew: that beyond the battles of politics 'we will be remembered for our contributions to the human spirit.'"

Mon, 07 Jan 2013 00:43:01 -0800 Basketball - Tips On How To Enhance Your Shooting Abilities http://okefsui.posterous.com/basketball-tips-on-how-to-enhance-your-shooti http://okefsui.posterous.com/basketball-tips-on-how-to-enhance-your-shooti Shooting is the core of basketball out of all the many aspects of the game. Shooting is not just one skill but several because you need to be able to make shots from different angles in different situations. The best players know it's important to shoot effectively from anywhere on the court. Using the following tips will help you improve your shooting abilities.

You should practice as much as possible, both on your own and in team drills. Practicing the same shots over and over can be tedious but it's the only way to improve. Practice taking shots when standing close to the basket and slowly move further away. Doing this drill help you learn how to keep your balance while also teaching you how much force is need to make shots at varying distances.

You will gain confidence as well, as you learn to make shots from further away.

Everyone should practice free throws or foul shots. Some consider these shots to be the purest form of shooting, since it is just your and the ball, with no one guarding you. Problems focusing and nerves make these seemingly easy shots difficult for many players. Focus on a spot above the rim and try to relax as much as possible when trying to make this kind of shot. Try to make the ball travel in an arc and remember to follow through with the shot.

Free throws are great because you can practice them anytime you are on a court with a basketball.

Being able to focus on the shot will make a huge impact on whether or not you get the ball in the hoop. This is one of the things that you should concentrate on while you are in the middle of practice. However, doing this is a lot harder to achieve when you in a middle of a game. Frequently while they are playing a game, players can be very driven and highly focused, but not in the right way. The most important thing to do is to pay attention to what must be done and ignore the rest. You do, of course, want to be alert about what's going on around you. But on the other hand, it will get to the point that you cannot concentrate on anything else but making your shot. When you are preparing for your next shot, you must not think about nothing else, including fear that you are not going to make the shot.

Shooting in basketball is obviously a crucial skill, and you have to devote lots of time and effort to get better at it. Aside from practice, you can often make faster progress by being open to suggestions given by a coach or teammate. Very often, in order to get better at shooting, all you have to do is make a change in one area, whether it's your stance, grip or the way you use your eyes, so pay attention to everything.

There isn't any doubt that there are lots of things that will assist you to strengthen your abilities in every sport, including the game of basketball, football and volleyball, and probably the most significant of them is your vertical leap skill.

In case you wish to strengthen your jump, then have a look at the sites listed below for a couple of recommendations.

Sun, 06 Jan 2013 01:15:19 -0800 Self Improvement And Empowerment Blog: Even You Need to be ... http://okefsui.posterous.com/self-improvement-and-empowerment-blog-even-yo http://okefsui.posterous.com/self-improvement-and-empowerment-blog-even-yo

Is it possible to Mother yourself when Mom's not available or nearby? I say yes. I think the best thing your mother can do for you is to teach you how to mother and nurture yourself. But let's face it - it's a skill, a talent and a gift. Doing this kind of self care requires commitment like that of a mother. But as an adult it is the #1 thing you need to become adept at.

This Mother's Day while showering or being showered by attention think of how you can become more self reliant in the self nurturing arena.

Secrets to Get YOU Started on Your Nurturing Journey:

Secret #1 -Reflect: Do you have time to reflect and think things through or are you always harried, frazzled and stressed? Well if you spend most of your days in this anxiety prone state you will not be on the road to long term health.

Learning to slow down and say no to all the distractions which take you away from your true self - your true core - will re-generate and honor your beautiful nature and soul.

Sounds like foreign territory? You must learn to nurture yourself by creating time without pressure (one of my new mottos) and taking the time to give to yourself - even just a little.

Secret #2 - Journal: I love to write I find it a source of grounding, clarity and a place where my imagination can run free. I get to work things out on paper. It's a safe and uncrowded place for me to explore and be as honest as I possibly can with myself. I know you may not find this easy to do and may in fact run from the mere mention of sitting down to write out your deep and most private thoughts. You scream out "I have no time, someone might read it, and I'm not much of a writer." Start with small steps. Remember this is a place to get to know yourself better. To get you started you may want to pick up the classic "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron.

Secret #3 Allow Others to do for YOU: Alert, alert! You can not do it all by yourself! I mean you can but at what price? Do you want to constantly feel rundown while feeling virtuous about accomplishing a feat you had set out to do single handedly? Wouldn't you like to have a team helping you out all the way to the finish line? Did you know collaboration comes very naturally to women and is so much more rewarding. Women actually crave it. Better satisfy this craving that your sweet tooth. Your "team or helpers" will also feel special contributing. They will feel a part of something and have a real sense of belonging. Let them! Let go of any martyr or a saint tendencies. Come to terms with the fact that you are a mere mortal with needs and an ability to ask for help (always!).

Secret #4 Make yourself Important: But don't take yourself too seriously. Don't dismiss any thoughts or ideas you have. Value them all - they are a part of you. The worst thing you can do is attack, criticize or demean yourself in any way. You want to be supportive of yourself at all times just like a nurturing mother would be.

Secret #5 Take a Bath: Nothing like a warm, sudsy, comforting, candle-lit bath at the end of a day that says "I love me"! No I don't mean in a narcissistic way but in a loving, mothering, and accepting way.

The warmth of this simple yet soothing activity will go a long way. You will feel calmer, more relaxed and you will sleep better, too. Your calming brain chemicals, specifically Serotonin and Gaba, will be activated ensuring a deep and restful sleep.

Mon, 31 Dec 2012 21:46:12 -0800 Henri Matisse Birthday: Celebrating The Master Painter With A Survey Of His Artwork (PHOTOS) http://okefsui.posterous.com/henri-matisse-birthday-celebrating-the-master http://okefsui.posterous.com/henri-matisse-birthday-celebrating-the-master

Today is the birthday of French painter, printmaker and sculptor, Henri Matisse. The Fauvist painter, famous for his mastery of expressive color, would turn 143 years old if he were miraculously still alive today.

herni matisse birthday

Matisse began his artistic career in 1891 when, after abandoning his job as a court administrator in northern France, he enrolled in Paris's Academie Julian to study traditional still lifes and landscape painting techniques. At the turn of the 20th century, the budding painter became involved with Fauvism, a style of painting that involved wild and discordant color schemes that rarely reflected the subject's natural appearance. Masterworks like "Open Window" and "Woman with the Hat" are highly regarded examples of this daring movement.

Despite the fact that Fauvism began to lose traction after 1910, the work of Matisse remained popular. Many of his paintings were grounded in classical French figure work, mixed with elements of Primitivism and Islamic art, amounting to an aesthetic most often compared to Pablo Picasso. In fact, Matisse and Picasso met at Gertrude Stein's Parisian salon, and embarked on a decades-long friendship and artistic relationship. In his later years, Matisse dabbled in collage, creating simpler, cutout works. The series "Blue Nudes" and art book "Jazz" originated during this period, demonstrating the artist's self-professed style -- "painting with scissors."

The beloved French artist died in 1954, leaving a wealth of artwork in museums like New York's Museum of Modern Art, London's Tate and Paris's Pompidou Centre. To celebrate his birthday, we've put together a slideshow of some of his best works. Scroll through the collection below and let us know which Matisse is your favorite in the comments section.

(AP) ? A Christmas Day twister outbreak left damage across the Deep South while holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled sometimes treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions.

Conditions were volatile throughout the afternoon and into the night with tornado warnings in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The storms were blamed for two deaths, several injuries, and left homes from Louisiana to Alabama damaged.

In Mobile, Ala., a tornado or high winds damaged homes and knocked down power lines and large tree limbs in an area just west of downtown around nightfall, said Nancy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Mobile County Commission. WALA-TV's tower camera captured a large funnel cloud headed toward downtown.

"We haven't verified what it was, but we have an area that we heard has damage to homes," she said.

Meanwhile, blizzard conditions were hitting the nation's midsection.

Earlier in the day, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky with predictions of 4 to 7 inches of snow.

No injuries were confirmed immediately, but fire crews were still making door-to-door checks in the hardest hit areas of Mobile. The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, which was providing storm updates through Twitter, said Murphy High School was damaged and that there was a gas leak at a nearby apartment building.

An apparent tornado caused damage in the west Alabama town of Grove Hill, located about 80 miles north of Mobile.

Mary Cartright said she was working at the Fast Track convenience store in the town on Christmas evening when the wind started howling and the lights flickered, knocking out the store's computerized cash registers.

"We've had some pretty heavy weather," said Cartright in a phone interview. "Our cash registers are down so our doors are closed."

Trees fell on a few houses in central Louisiana's Rapides Parish but there were no injuries reported and crews were cutting trees out of roadways to get to people in their homes, said sheriff's Lt. Tommy Carnline. Near McNeill, Miss., a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

Fog blanketed highways, including arteries in the Atlanta area, which was expected to be dealing with the same storm system on Wednesday. In New Mexico, drivers across the eastern plains had to fight through snow, ice and low visibility.

At least three tornadoes were reported in Texas, though only one building was damaged, according to the National Weather Service. Tornado watches were in effect across southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

More than 400 flights nationwide were canceled by the evening, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. More than half were canceled into and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport that got a few inches of snow.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

In Louisiana, quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in the western part of the state and a WDSU viewer sent a photo to the TV station of what appeared to be a waterspout around the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans. There were no reports of crashes or damage.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the National Weather Service said.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32.

In Mobile, a large section of the roof on the Trinity Episcopal Church is missing and the front wall of the parish wall is gone, said Scott Rye, a senior warden at the church in the Midtown section of the city.

On Christmas Eve, the church with about 500 members, was crowded for services.

"Thank God this didn't happen last night," Rye said.

The church finished a $1 million-plus renovation campaign in June 2011, which required the closure of the historic sanctuary for more than a year.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. ?

Stormy weather was complicating air travel at San Francisco International Airport Sunday, a duty manager said.

As of 12:30 p.m. Sunday, 25 flights -- nine departures and 16 arrivals -- had been cancelled, SFO duty manager Lily Wang said.

Most other flights were running between 45 and 90 minutes behind schedule, she said.

Regional flights were most heavily impacted by cancellations, Wang said.

With bad weather forecast for the remainder of the day, flight delays at SFO were expected to accumulate and worsen into tonight, Wang said.

Passengers were being advised to check the status of their flights before leaving for SFO that day.

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 17:59:49 -0800 Chinese Catholic domain first drawn in ICANN lottery http://okefsui.posterous.com/chinese-catholic-domain-first-drawn-in-icann http://okefsui.posterous.com/chinese-catholic-domain-first-drawn-in-icann

Internet name regulator ICANN has revealed the results of a lottery to determine the order in which generic top level domain (gTLD) names will be considered for approval, with the Vatican first in line.

The first gTLDs were chosen using a raffle process in Los Angeles on Monday, determining which will be given an initial evaluation, before potentially being granted next year. The old fashioned raffle-style selection process was favoured following concerns over a 'Digital Archery' method.

Of the 1,930 applicants which applied for the suffixes, 1,000 were picked for the approval process, with the the Catholic Church the first to be considered. This means it is likely that the Church's application for a suffix of the Chinese translation of 'Catholic' will be the first time a new gTLD is granted.

There were no English language gTLDs in the first 100 drawn, with the likes of Amazon's ".play" further down the ICANN list. Others such as ".cisco", ".vip" and ".fishing" also made it into the top 1,000 that are up for consideration.

ICANN announced plans to allow the use of gTLDs last year, opening up new domain names such in addition to the common ".com", ".org" and other country specific domain names. The organisation previously stated that it is only able to process 1,000 applications at a time, with more to be considered for approval next year.

Applicants had to pay $100 to enter into the raffle, in addition to a $185,000 registration fee, but there is no guarantee that their submissions will be approved.

Some have already filed objections to the use of specific gTLDs, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia attempting to block plans for ".gay" and ".wine", as well as objecting to the use of ".Shia" on the grounds that it would need the approval of the community it represents.

Consumer groups have also raised concerns about large companies owning gTLDs. Consumer Watchdog recently appealed to a US Senator objecting to the use of generic names such as ".book" or ".buy" which Google is hoping to register, along with a number of gTLDs that Amazon has applied for, including ".free", ".game" and ".shop".

It is argued that companies owning domain name strings which are separate from their own corporate branding would "privatise" the internet.

Ben Anderson, head of gTLDs at online brand protection specialists NetNames, said that all companies will benefit from the use of gTLDs once the application process opens up.

"Many brands decided not to apply in this round, and of those that have, some may be upset that they may not see their gTLD launched until 2015 due to the current timeline," Anderson said.

"Once consumers are educated, and understand the new domain name process, it will open up a wave of new opportunities for brands to have a stronger online presence, to engage more effectively with their customers and provide a measurable return on investment."

He added: "Preparation is key to ensure you are ready for when the online marketplace opens up to shape your online digital footprint. Those that act early will be ahead of the game and in a better position to defend their online presence."

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 03:09:27 -0800 Human history preserved in tree rings of prehistoric wooden wells http://okefsui.posterous.com/human-history-preserved-in-tree-rings-of-preh http://okefsui.posterous.com/human-history-preserved-in-tree-rings-of-preh Thursday, December 20, 2012

Prehistoric farming communities in Europe constructed water wells out of oak timbers, revealing that these first farmers were skilled carpenters long before metal was discovered or used for tools. The research published December 19 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Willy Tegel and colleagues from the University of Freiburg, Germany, contradicts the common belief that metal tools were required to make complex wooden structures.

The wooden water wells discovered in eastern Germany are over 7000 years old, and suggest that these early farmers had unexpectedly refined carpentry skills. "This early Neolithic craftsmanship now suggests that the first farmers were also the first carpenters", the study reports.

These first Central European farmers migrated from the Great Hungarian Plain approximately 7,500 years ago, and left an archeological trail of settlements, ceramics and stone tools across the fertile regions of the continent, a record named Linear Pottery Culture (LBK). However, much of the lifestyle of these early settlers is still a mystery, including the climate they lived in and technology or strategies they used to cope with their surroundings. According to the study, the oak timbers analyzed in this study are also a new archive of environmental data preserved in the tree rings, which could tell an accurate, year-by-year story of the times these early settlers lived in.

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 01:17:47 -0800 Rory McIlroy, Stacy Lewis run away with U.S. golf writers? awards http://okefsui.posterous.com/rory-mcilroy-stacy-lewis-run-away-with-us-gol http://okefsui.posterous.com/rory-mcilroy-stacy-lewis-run-away-with-us-gol

The only thing mildly surprising about the Golf Writers Association of America?s rewarding Rory McIlroy, Stacy Lewis, and Roger Chapman its Players of the Year trophies on Wednesday was that 2012 five-time global winner McIlroy was not a unanimous decision.

McIlroy, who captured the money titles on both the PGA and European Tours, carded 97.9 percent of the ballots (190 votes), with Brandt Snedeker (3) and Tiger Woods (1) keeping the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland from making it a clean sweep in the men?s division. Lewis won four times on the LPGA Tour this year and was the run-away winner in the women?s bracket, earning 78.8 percent (153 votes) to Na Yeon Choi?s 31 votes and 10 for Inbee Park. Chapman (60 percent / 116 votes) beat out Tom Lehman (44 votes) and Bernhard Langer (33) in the senior tabulations.

The GWAA will honor all three players at its 41st annual awards dinner on April 10, 2013, in Augusta, Ga., ahead of next year?s Masters Tournament.

As we noted on Tuesday, after McIlroy steamrolled his opposition for the European Tour?s Golfer of the Year distinction, the Ulsterman did much the same to his playing partners for much of the season, when he notched his second major by a lop-sided eight shots and took a firm grip on the world No. 1 ranking. McIlroy also won both the PGA Tour?s Byron Nelson Award and PGA of America?s Vardon Trophy for adjusted low scoring average (68.87) and finished the season with 10 top-10s in 16 starts. He birdied the final five holes of his season to cap an outstanding campaign with a win at the World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Lewis, with three runner-up finishes and a third-place slot on the LPGA money list ($1.87 million) was the first American since Beth Daniel in 1994 to cadge the tour's Player of the Year honors. The 27-year-old from Texas, who overcame scoliosis to make it big on the pro tour, also become the first American since Juli Inkster in 1999 to earn the GWAA?s PoY award.

Chapman, 53, began the year with conditional status on the Champions Tour but won the Senior PGA Championship in his first start of the 2012 season. The Englishman also came from four shots back to win the U.S. Senior Open.
