The rise of independent films is symbolizing this era, thanks to the generation that supports them. These films, much like major motion pictures, epitomize entertainment and human experiences. However, unlike parent films that are widely advertised, independent movies (also known as indie movies) are less marketed and usually involve an extra dash of character. According to junior Izzy Kraus, ?The major successes of indie films just go to show that you don?t need connections or an extreme budget to make it in the film industry. It gives people hope that one day these main stream movies that attract people will fall a little short of these amazing indie films.? Fortunately, Orlando provides many venues for indie film connoisseurs, making it convenient to view spellbinding movies such as the following:

Another Earth: Directed by Mike Cahill, Another Earth follows the story of Rhoda Williams who, after laying eyes on a duplicate Earth one evening, crosses paths with a renowned composer in a heartbreaking accident. Rhoda?s MIT ambitions in astrophysics are eliminated after being incarcerated for four years. Upon her release, she seeks composer John Burroughs whose family was killed in the car accident four years earlier. Rhoda and John develop a romantic relationship while Earth and its celestial twin move closer towards each other. Rhoda?s identity is slowly revealed to John, and the two of them are faced with right and wrong as she is given the opportunity to visit another Earth.

Donnie Darko: Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Donnie Darko is about a troubled young teenager who survives a bizarre accident one evening. Following the accident, Donnie is plagued by visions of a man in a large bunny costume. This mysterious apparition manipulates Donnie to commit a variety of nefarious crimes. Due to Donnie?s mental illness and paranormal visions of Frank the bunny rabbit, he is torn between what is reality and what is far out of his mind. Junior Kelly Encarnacion says, ?This movie was a little disturbing, but at the same time it was different than most movies and had a lot more meaning, so it made it interesting.?

Night of the Living Dead: A pioneer of the zombie revival movement, Night of the Living Dead is the ultimate indie movie with all the bells and whistles. Directed by George Romero, this film stars Judith O?Dea and Russell Streiner as siblings who visit their grandfather?s grave, only to encounter a ?ghoul? in the cemetery. Russell?s character Johnny is killed, and Barbra (O?Dea) flees in terror. Thought to be caused by radioactive contamination, these mysterious zombies engage in mass murder along the eastern seaboard, injecting horror in each of their victims. An anonymous sophomore and avid independent film fan believes, ?Indie movies like this one that are based on zombie stories have a lot more character than mainstream movies about the living dead.?

Being John Malkovich: Directed by Spike Jonze, John Cusack plays Craig Schwartz: an unemployed puppeteer who?s bored with his marriage, occupation, and dull life. However, things take an unexpected twist when Schwartz discovers a portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich. Through his puppeteer methods, Schwartz learns that he can control Malkovich?s actions indefinitely, until the portal is passed to the next host. A series of dysfunctional events characterizes the flow of this movie, proving that a film does not need to make sense to be a comedic masterpiece.
